- Washington gubernatorial candidates Dave Reichert (R) and Bob Ferguson (D) squared off in their second, and perhaps final, debate in Spokane on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
The Association of Washington Business and Greater Spokane Inc. hosted the second gubernatorial debate at The Fox Theater. Kalae Chock and Sean Owsley from NonStop Local and Austin Jenkins from Pluribus News moderated the debate.
Reichert and Ferguson discussed topics impacting voters like business climate, cost of living, the economy, public school funding, green energy and emissions, transportation, reproductive freedom, and taxes.
The debate was televised by KHQ-TV and KOMO-TV, which is the exclusive debate partner for western Washington. The debate aired on KOMO News in western Washington.
The general election will take place on November 5, 2024. According to the Washington Secretary of State’s Office, the start of the 18-day voting period begins on October 18 - ballots will be mailed out and Accessible Voting Units will be available at voting centers.
Voters in Washington state must deposit their ballot in an official drop box by 8 p.m. on Election Day on Nov. 5.

Bob is saying we’re one of the worst states that taxes the middle class and poor compared to the rich. Who has been running the state for 40 years.?
I'll answer that question for you. Its been conservative democrats and Republicans who have ran the state.
Ferguson is (broadly speaking) apart of the progressive wing of the party which has been trying to institute tax reforms and various other changes for the past decade or two. They are in the minority within the state House and Senate and thus haven't been able to pass their policies without significant concessions to the right wing.
I don't get why they don't just form their own party..

I also wanted to give a huge shout out to Mr. Dave Reichert for bringing up the squatters issue; yes my family fell victim for almost 2 years and the squatters got free attorney and the moratorium kept getting extended. We were truly the ones being victimized and silenced with no rights or way to protect our property, house or collect rent. The DOJ needs to change here as well. It is unjust to protect criminals!

Washington state has not used any of the money won from big pharma to fight addiction. If they had, there would be a clear explanation of the good it has done. However, drug addiction has skyrocketed in Washington and the rest of the USA.

I asked that in another comment. If he's made us 10 billion dollars or whatever he claims, and the government is making it's own money and taxing eveyone for more where is all that money going? How are they wasting it all? Is it all on graft and corruption for these hollow multi million dollar wasteful construction projects?
How are schools underfunded? Aren't there less kids these days? Shouldn't we be shutting down schools and consolidating into larger classrooms? Shouldn't we be putting teachers out of work and forcing them into the job market so they can become police officers or take on other useful jobs instead? Wasn't that what they said all the money from the capital gains tax was for? And it received more money than they were expecting?

Summary:

I've been working 14 years in the prison system and Bob Ferguson has released sex offenders and that have re-offended . Currently department of corrections is making drug addicts by putting inmates on suboxone before their release. This suboxone does not cure their addiction it makes them more addicted. 1) I built a commercial shop on 3/4 of an acre. It cost $98,000 for the permit and took 2 years, YEARS! To get the permit.
2) I pay over $100,000 in B&O tax regardless of my net earnings. Net earning are take-home for a business, FYI.
3) I rent a house because I divorced in 2019 and I decided not to take my half and dump it into an over-priced home for a $3,500 to $4,500 a month mortgage.
4) I send my child to private school because I believe WA state public schools are under-funded and over crowded. They can take a STRONG lesson from Iowa or Wisconsin.
5) I can’t stand the fuel taxes in WA state. They are too high and obscure.
6) Electric vehicles are not affordable or dependable. Unless they are used. How many charging stations will one apartment complex need in 2030?
7) Insurance cost’s in WA are high. I blamed Rob Mekenna, but Ferguson has done nothing in 12 years, so maybe Mekenna wasn’t to blame.
8) The streets in WA are decent. Trucking needs to take over the inside lane like Indiana, common sense. The ferry system needs a serious pivot to relieve the serious need. Electric is all well and good, but there is a serious need for additional ferries.
#7 I think the insurance prices have increased mainly because of crime and inflation.

I was not aware of this debate between Reichert & Ferguson mainly because I was focused on the national stage. After listening to the candidates, I realized that same problem exists in this state as nationally, democrats are liars, deceptive, immoral and willing to do anything to win. The one thing that Reichert didn't say to Ferguson was "if you want to do all of these great things, why did you not start doing them while you were in the position you presently hold? It's the same thing with Harris, why didn't you do these things in 3 1/2 years as VP?

When the minimum wage is raised, and the gas tax is increased significantly in our state, along with additional taxes, it is referred to as a pass-through tax. In this scenario, the state ends up with the money, but the lives of the workers are not changed or improved, and small businesses pay more. It's kind of like using our labor force as "tools" to collect additional tax dollars. IMHO, this should be illegal. The workers should end up with the additional pay.
Since KOMO is a west side channel, I’m hoping that these comments are indicative of how this race will go. Elect Dave Reichert!

@@thehimself4056 It's a tough issue to muddle through, although personally I'd say it's the will of the Washingtonian that you go and vote and the state respect your vote. I originally wrote more but in a nutshell, abortion is a cool promise but if the state goes to heck it won't be any good to anyone. For example, imagine moving to Chicago for the tight gun laws only to find yourself center in a gunfight stemming from it's other regrettable problems. You may get harassed in Seattle by the homeless and he may subject us to more taxes but at least we'll have state sanctioned abortions.
