  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #476
    Dates of Adventure: 10/16/20
Hiking to a SUPER remote cabin just outside the boundary of Death Valley, where it meets the military lands known collectively as the R-2508 Special Use Airspace Complex.
Some say this cabin was built back in the 1940s by an employee of Walt Disney, as a desert hideaway...but whatever its history, it has sadly fallen into disrepair thanks to the access road being closed when the area was designated wilderness. But despite the cobwebs and dust, you can see how cozy and well-built this place was!

At 11:18 that is a toaster. Old fashion kind. Makes 4 pieces of toast by setting it on top of the wood burner. "Wild Bill" from 77 is a good friend of mine. Known him and his wife for decades. He's also a good friend of Guy Starbucks. He carved his name in every cabin and mine in DV over the years. You'll see his name again I'm sure.

You did find a nice old place, went there as a kid with my family, went through the fort iren base as it was closed in the 60. You were very close to the Edison salt mine on the dry lake, there is a monorail train that ran from there to the train by ridgcrest. Most of it is still there and some is on the base. It is in Death Valley and it is one of the places that park service will not tell you about.

Will Bill carved his name in almost every cabin in the Death Valley area. Some are gone or burnt, but you can still find his name well carved in a prominent place in many of the cabins left. In the 1980s he was selling artwork for a time in one of the other cabins you visited not too long ago made from a “train car”. I think he might have done one or two of the pieces on the walls in there. I never met him, but my dad met him a couple of times while he was staying in Panamint Valley and at the “train cabin”. He gave him a ride somewhere in the bed of his truck...

He uses it during hunting season and packs everything in by back pack or he uses a mountain bike with a home made trailer he fabbed from an old grocery store shopping cart. Looks funny as hell but he's hauled out quartered out elk with it. Good wheels from another junked mountain bike and some welding skills did the trick!

That area is known as the "Bowling Alley". It was a narrow strip of BLM land nestled between Death Valley and Fort Irwin, abutting China Lake on the West. The cabin was along an old (1940's and before) route to Death Valley. People would make their way up from Hinkley, through Copper City. Some would continue north through Wingate Pass (known as Windy Pass back then), others would venture east to what is now Ft. Irwin, and proceed north through the spring where the cabin is. The cabin was the home of a biologist for several years as he studied the spring area, its vegetation, and critters. I think I have an article about him. If I find it, I will email it to you. The Bowling Alley was BLM but is now part of Death Valley. The transfer was part of the Great American Outdoors Act that President Trump signed in March 2019. It's been implied since that the park service plans to close access to most areas there and up through Crystal Hills due to their remoteness and lack of rangers to patrol the areas. They probably will leave some limited access as there is a radio transmitter on one of the hills that will still need access somehow.

    11:25 a toaster.
You heat it up on a burner then start placing slices of bread one at a time
1-2-3 and by the time you've placed #4 turn #1 around and keep going.
When you've completed the 2nd cycle start plating the finished toast while replacing
    new slices of bread.
With the right timing and temperature you can efficiently toast-up a whole loaf
bread on a merry-go-round system (with a fresh slice of finished toast coming off every 10 seconds or so)
The pilgrims served-up a whole tribe of Algonquin Indians at the 1st Thanksgiving Brunch that way.

The book is "Working", by Studs Terkel. The 4-sided kitchen gadget is a toaster. It sits atop a stove. Glad to see you removed that lipstick, Sarah. Your lips are fine as they are, just as nature designed them.
These remote cabins make me curious about the people who lived in them. A peaceful place to be. Wind, sun, rain, birds, insects ... Life reduced to its basic elements.

"Working" "toaster" indeed Grey Jay. So much intact glass! TY Sarah. Gray Jay is right, you look fine without all the extra "grooming". Nice to see you wearing boots.

That unidentified appliance in the cabin was a toaster, believe it or not! You warm up your oven and put 4 slices of bread on the toaster (one on each side) then stick it in the oven. Remove when golden brown.
