John thanks for your great videos! They have helped with several small audio projects. My first with an 8610 my second with this ic but on the other popular configuration. It performed much better than this configuration did. Again thank you
I have one of those board as well, I will be changing the inductors to much higher quality versions. In fact they are filter inductors from a Harman/Kardon Onyx Studio (First Gen). Also part of the poor output could possibly be due to the protection diode as well. For any amp I build they don't have diodes in series with them. I really dislike the diode protection technique. I will make a video showcasing my results with the mods as well.
John, your amplifier videos are great, but how can we build a power supply that puts out 100 watts or more at 32-42 volts to power them. Transformers are too expensive. Can you do a series on power supplies for projects? .
Richard Friedlander , Amen to that !!!!!!! that has been my biggest issue so far with amp boards no matter who the manufacturer is. Because a lot of these mini amps that do come with power supplies are not powerful enough to get the " Rated " output power of the board !!!!!!!! I don't know why in the hell they don't sell a cable & power supply ( PACK ) for boards that ( Match ) the output power of the actual amp !!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are basically two alternatives that I am aware of. #1 is a 'linear' power supply and yes, that requires big transformers - no direct way around that. #2 are the switching power supplies that are a completely different design and do not have a big transformer. But switching supplies can generate electrical noise that might (only might, not definitely) create audio problems. They usually have a square wave source inside, thus a ton of harmonics that typically need to be filtered out. May be fewer issues at audio than at RF -- where I have used one (I'm a ham radio op). So you might google for "DIY switching power supplies".
@@markanderson8066 switching frequency is in the 80-400khz no need to worry about harmonics that far from the audio range unless one is built with cat ears
LOL, just noticed you said gold plated 3 and a half _inch_ input jack at 1:32. That must be a giant pencil you're using to point with... I suspect the coils are partly heating through losses in the ferrite - problem with ferrites is that if run hot they can deteriorate in efficiency with age, its better to err on the generous side with sizing ferrite cores. Recently I got a TDA7498 board from eBay - although I've only tested it a little it seems pretty good with efficiency and distortion, 45mA standing current at 27V supply, inductors not overhot. Seems to handle 4 ohm load (despite only being rated for 6), although its a two-way crossover system so who knows what the actual impedance is really. Have you played with that particular chip?
Hi John. I recently bought one of these to drive a pair of spring tanks and am finding that with any drive the output begins clicking and I have to power cycle it to resume. Tanks are a 10Ohm load, but definitely highly inductive loads given the nature of the spring tanks. I have added a passive HPF before the circuit to cut the low end, hoping to improve the headroom but the results weren't great. Should I be adding my own output filter before the tanks? Or should I be using a different board with better coils for driving these kinds of loads? Distortion not an issue given the application.
Hallo John, did you do a test on the SANWU Yamaha YDA 138E stereo amplifier board? I am asking because the connection points on the board are not marked clearly and I do not want to burn the board/chip out by making the wrong power and speaker connections.
John how are you? I have a couple of question for you regarding this Yamaha board, can you help somehow? I need to built a white noise generator, in order to excite small cell phone speaker and avoid analog recording, any idea how to realize this?
Hello. I am keen to buy one of those chinese amps. I own dayens ampino and having massive failure when turning it on. Big bang going to my speakers. And i want to diy this board. So, as I understood, if I replace coils with 22u I can use them with 8ohm speakers much better than oem config? Thanks. Great chanel.
With that HF roll off, makes mt think the output filter has incorrect components fitted (I doubt these boards are pre tested!) That would account for the heating of the coils if they are also filtering audio. Quite large chips for such low power!. You would have thought showing the chip numbers would be a selling point. Yamaha is a well respected name in audio. However if the chips are rubbish, maybe Yamaha just wanted to get rid of them, hence the name removed. AS things stand I do not think this chip will promote the name Yamaha at all.
They used 33uH coils where the datasheet calls for 10uH for 4 ohm loads. For 8 ohm loads, the datasheets calls for 22uH so these are way overvalued. I can't measure the capacitor without removing it. That's one issue with class D is that the ideal output filter has different values for differing load impedances. They could have compromised on a filter for 6 ohm loads since the board was designed to handle 4 ohm loads and often used with 8. I think the ICs are okay, whoever designed the board could have done better.
And if they were getting hot, they may be undersized in terms of current capacity too. If you can find the right ones to 'fix' it, you'll have another video!
Once, I bought a SURE class D 25 W board and the frequency response was ridiculous, sounded not much better than an AM radio. chokes said 330, but I measured and sure enough they were a factor of 10 off as though they were mislabeled. Replacing them took care of it. The moral is if you are buying these el-cheapo class D looking for miracle power/cost ratio, be prepared to at least replace your chokes for one reason or another. The other problem is typically hiss and interference sounds at low levels. I have one of these coming in soon (well, from china so not too soon) and we will see.
Some Bluetooth audio amplifier boards from Sanwu have their markings erased with laser, which leaves ugly streaks on the IC that seems to attract dust from all over the world like nothing else for some reason.
Recently I tried this amplifier, it has unpleasant distortions, so I looked into datasheet and on the board and found that the ICs are not synchronized. Chinese ingeneers did not discovered master/slave configuration yet...
"Chinese ingeneers did not discovered master/slave configuration yet" yes they did they just know that it would take a little over 1hr more and every minute burns too much coals that equates to higher electricity bills which in turn becomes detrimental to their target profit margin by the end of production
I would not connect them direct. I assume you are using a crossover for each speaker to handle part of the audio spectrum. Since the speakers are of limited power, a 12v 3amp supply would be my recommendation.

cant you just replace those 1A rated cheap inductors and 2 craptacular electrolytics then test again? also whatsup with the solder bridge between 2 smd ceramic caps?
No. You'd replace the inductors with better ones of the correct value. They left off a power supply trace on the board and had to add a jumper. You can see the trace is there on the other IC. How they missed that simple connection is beyond me.
I think the out put mosfet in the chip is nat that much of fast or the filter is not quite good... Man... Thay perform nice bass but high frequency....
maybe they are fake/reject IC's sanded to disguise them, and their switching frequency is too low, and not being filtered effectively either? you could actually see the switching 'square wave' signal superimposed on the sine wave. The LC network should completely remove any artifacts of the switching. They must sound sooo bad through good speakers, good for a Dalek-Voice sim but a long way from Hi-fi.

Se si usano altoparlanti a 4ohm diventano caldi, e sarebbe meglio usare un dissipatore di caolore in alumino. Solo che il problema credo siano i induttori che si scaldano molto. Credo che li serve un dissipatore di calore.
I'm disappointed I was thinking it would put out more at 8 ohms at 12v I was wanting to drive these... www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-pc68-4-2-1-2-full-range-poly-cone-driver--295-150 Does anyone know of a clean amp at 12v I should use?
None of these amps will be able to deliver over 8 watts of clean power per channel into 8 ohms. It is a physical limitation. For more power, look for an amp that accepts 18 or 24 volts. If you need it to run off of 12 volts you can get a power supply that can boost the 12 volts to a higher voltage for the amplifier.
how are you sure are those yamaha chips if numbers are scraped off. seems fishy. there are a lot of class d (doodoo) chips on the market these days. edit: 10w@10% thd 1w@.02% thd like i said. if 1w is enough for you then, hey...

Hi ...sir .....plz suggest best stereo amplifier board in budget .....for home use
Please do a review on the TPA6120 headphone amp board that you can get online. The one with the RED board would be awesome

hey John, Mike here, I have something for you to review, what is your PO box thanks mike
Hi Mike, PO Box 362, Vandalia, OH 45377
Thanks!
Some Bluetooth audio amplifier boards from Sanwu have their markings erased with laser, which leaves ugly streaks on the IC that seems to attract dust from all over the world like nothing else for some reason.
I've noticed those types of SMD coils get brittle when they get really hot.
nice video, can u please make a video on tda2030?
Why did they scrape the chips when we know its a Yda138-e
In chipset data, 2 channel output is 10w,
But in ad 20w,
Is product advertising a lie?
10w x2 = 20w.
It's all in the way it is stated, pay attention, they will try to deceive you even by telling the truth.
Damm you just informed me that Malcolm young died yesterday!
AC/DC ?

The same things happen with the TPA3116D2 boards. ffcosag, another youtuber, has done some research on this and posted a fix.
"Chinese ingeneers did not discovered master/slave configuration yet" yes they did they just know that it would take a little over 1hr more and every minute burns too much coals that equates to higher electricity bills which in turn becomes detrimental to their target profit margin by the end of production
Its TA2024 by TriPath IC
Sir I have tpa3116d2(50+50)watt amp and I'm attaching 15w×2 4ohm, 10w×2 6ohm, 25×1 8ohm which power supply best for this load . Volte? Amperes?

i got
5 different tpa3116

good luck
To my ears, the YDA138 sounded fine. Performance is probably a lot better at 8 ohms.

Me too, tested almost all of these and agree with you-this double chip Yamaha sounds far better than others
Perfect!
For the best quality, how many amperes?
3-4 amps for overhead?
Hi, scuse me bit i'm a bit confused...whit the configuration of this amp, can i use 8 omh speakers? Thanks!!!!
Yes

This amp sounds bad. Muddy, frequency response issues, high distortion. Look for something else.
You didn't include many current draw readings of the amp.
