Full credit to Coll for his work ethic and attitude, and it shows in his game which has come on well. But Farag oozes natural talent and shot-making.

just seems like Paul hasn't been able to break through lately as he did in 2021-22. really hoping to see him at the top again.

His pressure squash is great but I think he needs to introduce more speed changes in his game to really make a difference against someone like Farag. Farag's creativity won over Coll's measured squash today.

This is mostly just Farag playing great of course, but Coll didn’t do a lot wrong besides the fact his core game type is just taken apart by the Egyptians *when* they’re on form. He can get wins against that style for sure, but he always needs them to make a few errors. His metronomic style will grind down mere mortals but the very top players of the more creative style will continue to maintain the edge over him. He should be looking at David Palmer, Nick Matthew et al - similarly styled players who added creativity as the pro game evolved during their careers. If his game continues to stand still (save for a few minor tweaks to backhand prep), he’ll likely get increasingly picked off and start to drop down the rankings

Yeh he needs to incorporate some greater pressure and points through strategic creativity.

Cant help but feel what separates this Paul Coll from world #1 Paul Coll is the lack of touch at the front. Right now, he just isn't threatening whereas at his peak it seemed like every other counter drop was winning quality, particularly in the front left.

@@M0odez He is not improving in new skills and his tactical game. Ali, Asal and Diego has constantly improved their tactical as well as technical game. That’s what makes them different

I agree, and the same seems to hold for Makin. Not too long ago bth seemed to be improving their attacking game resulting in big wins, but then they 'reverted' to the safe game again and their ability to hit winners in the front of the court went out the window.

Cool came to play squash but Farag played chess. He outsmarted Coll and was very strategic. He slowed down the ball and played the back corners. A slow game is Coll’s weakness.

Coll played all the game. Farag was just directing him where to pickup next ball. It was funny watching it. Great game Farag. You are the best. I think Coll already hit his peak year ago. He hasn’t really progressed or developed beyond his attritional game style. He doesn’t take any risk and even when there’s opportunity to hit a winner, his natural tendency is to just hit a high percentage drive to the back. I’m not sure why he’s fallen back to his old boring style, he showed some flair previous two years and he was winning more that time, he just needs the confidence to kill, he can’t just wait for these top guys to make unforced errors, they’re too good.

Farag, at times, can seem almost unbeatable! It’s not very often you see Coll lose in straight sets. Farag, seems to have so much time and so many options because of his lightening fast reflexes with the ball. He really is way ahead of even the top 10 and even those who make up the top 5 players! He’s an extraordinary player! At times it was almost as if Farag was toying with Coll with lots of lobs to the back mixed up with short angled shots to the front an little trouble with Coll’s drop shots and counter drops that he got back with ease! As it stands right now! Farag, is the best player on tour in the men’s game!

  • @avonhoymon1720

Paul's game is impeccably solid BUT, he needs to go back to the Paul Coll that takes some risk and goes for kill shots... at this point in his career he appears to be just re-setting points... you can't win matches against the other big 3 when you're doing that.. they don't feel any threat..

Mr Coll, when the only creative shot you have is the lift you become as predictable as the rain in London. Coll has had to work his butt off to reach the top 5. Farag and the other top players were born into it. He was a mere pretender when got to #1 however much the commentators would like to pretend otherwise.
