I would use a pen half in 2 with magnets in between without cutting the cards. Switch the pen with the normal pen to give it to the person who is watching, including the cards to believe your magic.
Any chance you sell these card setups ready made? I realize its alot of work but because of that, there likely will be a demand. I wanna do this trick for my kids but having to buy the strings, double backers and do all the cutting & tying, its a little bit of a turn off.

@@1495978707 BTS clips of movies are interesting but are definitely not necessary to have a sense of awe and appreciation for the movie itself. Same with magic. It's not easy, but people understand that without exposing the mechanics.
And it shows how the instant where the actual magic happens is so far away from when the audience thinks it happens. Rest is just showmanship - a lot of fun getting fooled here than when investing :)
I’m gonna be 100 percent honest like even when I find out how certain tricks are done it’s still insane because of some of the dexterity you need to pull it off so cleanly

It takes years of training to perform a magic trick. I tried and succeeded in some basic manipulations, but when I wanted to practice "back and front", after three months I was only able to succeed one time out of ten. Professionals succeed every time and do it with not one card, but with a deck of cards. I admire their dexterity.
The initial demonstration in the first 10 seconds of the video are edited to make the trick seem better. The audio is muted when he moves the sharpie through the card - only the background music is playing. When he shows how to do the actual trick, the gates of the gimmick make an audible clicking noise that sort of give the trick away. This would be a difficult trick to pull off correctly in a quiet setting.

Magic is cool and all but I'm absolutely living for the crazy levels of science and engineering and art that goes into stuff like this.

@@radscorpion8 That's the fun of technology though: when it's figured out, it seems so simple and dull, but to someone who doesn't know how it works at all, it feels like it's somehow just magic. LCD's seem so simple and mundane nowadays, but they weren't even conceived of a few decades ago, so that just tells ya how far we've come in terms of tech.
Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.
Funny thing is, learning how some tricks are made actualy caused me to value and appreciate even more these artists and the Art they do.
Weird comparison, but I felt the same way about pro wrestling after studying theatre at university. When I was a kid I was a big fan of wrestling, then hit that "it's all fake" stage in my mid to late teens and stopped enjoying it. But after studying things like stage combat, theatre in the round, crowd work, improv and so on, I gained a whole new appreciation for the craft.
Sometimes it's even more entertaining to see behind an effective illusion than it is to be fooled by it.
I love how magic has turned into a realm of secrets to hide the wonder and now has transformed into an open sharing of ideas to make even better illusions that everyone can enjoy. Even as the audience learns how it is done that only makes you appreciate it even more. Then someone takes that same trick and adds to it to evolve the idea even further.
When the audience knows how it’s done it’s just showing off skill, not doing magic. The feeling of amazement people get is seeing something they know should be impossible without a clear explanation. They know it’s not “real” magic, but outright exposure eliminates all wonder. At best some people will still appreciate the skill, but most will lose interest once they know the secret.

Many would even be disappointed knowing how most of it works, even if they say they want to know. Magic gives people a chance to experience real mystery. Let's not rob them of that.

Magicians tricks reminds me of the boom in machinist and engineering work around the turn of the century, all the inventions and things people were coming up with. Only instead of making machine gun patents or boiler schematics, you're making a trick.

I remember as a kid, we had a magician visit my school. He showed us a trick and I thought it was really cool. I begged this guy to tell me how it was done and he eventually whispered in my ear "it's a secret". I always thought that was stupid because even after knowing how this truck is done I still think it's magical. I love learning about how these things are done. Thanks for not being a stingy old magician with your knowledge.

@@iamrutabaga7761 Would have been much cooler of that guy to recognize your passion and set you on the path to learning how tricks are done. Although, there's really nothing to it other than buying tricks at a shop, or buying a book. No magic is really a secret, it's just behind a paywall.
For a lot of people, learning the secret kills the enjoyment. They get brief satisfaction from knowing how it's done, but that trick will never impress again. I will say I don't hold back if I think someone is genuinely interested, but most people aren't. You are the exception. That's great. Embrace it. But don't ever think that you're doing laymen a favor by telling them how everything works.

I've stopped it at 4:30. I really enjoyed your presentation of the history and nod to those who came before. I am sure it is a fascinating gimmick - I have an engineer's brain. And I'm always amazed at the skill of the performer. I don't normally hesitate to learn how it is done, but I can tell you've done a lot. On this one, I'm choosing to keep the magic. Thank you!

**Tip**
Considering your giving that one away, I suggest you cut an arch through the 4 closest barn doors. So if you leave the pen in, there is no square cut, it shapes to the sharpie.
Wen you performed the example 14:01 the flaps at an angle are pushed back out. With the arch cut, you can perform a flawless pull.
and obviously to pull this trick off you wouldnt want anyone hearing the cuts as they smack on the marker.
I just gotta say you are an incredible magician and extremely innovative, creative and imaginative. I am blown away at just how unbelievable and awesome your intricate card gimmick is. I just got back into magic after 42 years,(I was a teenager doing card, coin and close up magic from a kit and library books for family and friends and as amateur as they come). I had stumbled across a “Street Magic” video a few weeks back that rekindled my love of card magic which also led me to the world of Cardistry. I went from one unopened deck of standard Bicycle cards that I had just laying around my house to over 60 different decks from all of the top-tier card manufacturers in the Card Magic and Cardistry industry in just over a week, and I still have 21 more decks are on their way. I have been practicing all the basic cuts, flourishes, grips, fans, spreads, and shuffles every day. Anyway this video of yours is my introduction to you and your channel here on RUclips, and you impressed me so much, not only did you get a huge like from me but I subscribed as well, it’s the least I could do. That's a neat trick. Showing us how to build a gimmick card in order to trick us into believing he does not have real magic powers. But you cannot fool me wizard!

Great trick but the snapping of the card as the Sharpie is pulled through can be a giveaway.
Yeah when the sound was removed on the initial demos it was smoother psychologically. But its still a hell of a trick.
That's when you ad some sound effects like saying "WOOB WOOB WOOB WOOW! as you pull the sharpie through 😁

You think you’ll hear that on a city street?
I think slightly rounding off the hard edges of the "barn doors" would lower the click noise.
Also, the performer could make a loud sound for those parts. It's about distraction anyway.
0:35 - 0:36 that was a really smooth way to hide the spectator card and bring the gimmick card to the front and I love how it works to hide the dirty card and bring the spectator card forward when you do it in reverse. I guess you'd call that some variation of a double lift?

We all know the card is probably gimmicked but IT LOOKS so clean!
Great trick, great tutorial. One suggestion would be to sew a version where you use a blue card but make the cutouts red so you can really see the contrast on camera.
Anyone dedicated should have no problem following along but having the contrast could be neat.

Thanks for the tutorial. As a videographer though I feel like I should also give you some advice. Get more light and shrink your aperture (higher f number) as it will increase the « in focus » area. Most of what you did on the table was out of focus and we couldn’t follow.
You can also record these segments on your phone as they have a smaller sensor and not much depth of field, most phones can give great images and everything will be in focus.
the part where the sharpie sliding through the card in the beginning was completely silent but later in the video sounded like a train rolling in was truly magical.

Great gimmick!! One thing I learned is that the closer to the side edges of each "door" you make the holes, the stronger and more reliable the trap door is. I also put the Sharpie curve at the bottom of the card, just as at the top. Thank you so much for your videos.

The amount of preparation for tricks that seem to be so organic is amazing in and of itself. I imagine magicians spend hours with tiny strands of string and cards making individual props for every trick.

Thank-you for being a quality magician and mentioning credit where credit is due. You have my respect. If I ever make this gimmick, I will credit you, and the evolution.
A better but slightly more difficult gimmick would be to cut the "barn doors" in a curved shape to match the sharpie, so you could even stop at each door and the previous door can fully close with no gap. That is, the side toward the viewer is always a semi-circle of a hole that the pen fits perfectly.

i love that when you see the trick after you understood it, you can clearly see all the hints and signs how it works. and these hints were noticeable during your first contact with the trick, but seemed mysterious.
He edited out the sound the pen made as it moved through the cards in the beginning though, so that wasn't able to be noticed at the first example.
Please stop using a narrow focal point. Half your videos are out of focus.

@@OhSlugggy Just barely get your finger under the first card of the pack. The trick card is double backed, so if you put the signed card face up on top and flip the two of them over at the same time, you end up with the trick card on top and it looks like you only flipped 1 card. Repeat the process for concealing the trick card and producing the signed card.

Ok even seeing how its made and performed it is STILL an amazing illusion close up. The elastic thread was the thing I would never have thought of. I was thinking a second sliding card or part of a card underneath but this is much more complex and detailed. Very nice. And the other trick with the board and moving hole...pheeee..witch!! :)

This was so cool. I think it will take several tries to get the cuts right (rounding the corners just a bit) to where it doesn't make as much sound as well as practicing the movement when you pull the marker thru. Beautiful 🎩
I love the challenge of thinking through how these tricks work. And this one worked pretty much how I thought it would, but I don't think I would have guessed the elastic string.
The version I made years ago was using a common stick pen that I gimmicked and I could put it through anything. I used to put it through the water glass at a restaurant. I would slide it up, remove it from the glass and hand the pen over as it was completely normal and examinable. I only had to palm a small part. It worked great and I gave away many to friends, never sold it. Much cleaner approach and more versatile. I like your use of the card, but no one can examine it.
How do you deal with the snapping sound the gimmicked card makes?

Yeah the pen through the card is amazing, but hot dam is that a lot of effort for that trick that takes under a minute to perform!

What do you do about the sound the sharpie makes as it passes through the barn door sections underneath?
Usually you should try to perform this in crowded areas, like parties, night clubs, in busy street areas. The ambient noise should cover up the sound of the barn doors closing.
Genius and elegant design. That the sleight is so simple makes it all the better too. Just wow!

Only issue is, you get the clicking noises when you're moving the sharpie through. On a video that can easily be hidden/muted/edited out. But in person if you're moving along and you hear click click clack, it's just odd to a spectator and might give it away, no?
You will probably have to talk loudly when it happens to mask that, or the crowd will be gasping anyways
Great video, but I can't tell if you're having focusing issues or just shooting with such a wide aperture that the depth of field is too shallow. It seems like the latter. If so I'd resolve that to make the videos more watchable.
Even seeing the barn doors the sharpie slide looks so clean. Whoever thought of this is on another level of visual attention.
This is super cool. I wonder if it's possible to make the barn doors smaller and have a funky shape like a weird spiral u? Maybe start from a corner and spiral the sharpie to the middle of the card and pull it out? God dammit I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight!!

This is very impressive. I’m amazed by how ingenious the inventors of tricks are.
Im 9 minutes into this and cannot guess for the life of me how this is possible. even knowing we are cutting 8 parts im guessing the "spring" back but it looks too good for that. I recently found you and enjoy you more than C.R but i still like D.M. craziness. I want to figure this out knowing what i know but it's ingenius very sharpie. Why not magnetize the sharpie w 2 earth magnets.
The shallow depth of field is really tough on the eyes when trying to demonstrate precise details, especially with the AF going in and out.
I almost didn’t want to watch this because I don’t want to ruin the magic. The best part is suspending your disbelief and allowing yourself to be amazed.

When I saw it first I was intrigued. After seeing how it worked I went back to the beginning to see the trick done and immediately saw the barn doors open as you slid it through. It's an amazing trick when you're clueless lol. It fooled me the first time. My only issue would be the slide of hand and misdirection. I'm not a particularly smooth person ☺️. I shall subscribe now for the hell of it. Would like to learn more.
I enjoy watching slight of hand even though videos like this reveal secrets of the trade. That little bit of knowledge only elevated the performance of someone very good.

Sheesh, that's a lot of work for a trick and even knowing it, it blows my mind. still finds it hard to see through it, looks good. I do appreciate people showing tricks, showing the magic how it works and what needs to be prepared.
In the world of magic most times I feel like it’s important to actually show how the trick is done. Because in most cases how you’re able to perform a trick is even more impressive than the magic itself. Great video!!!! Btw if you tell and show how it’s done, in most cases they are left more impressed. Especially if they know the trick but are still left in amazement.
That is a fallacious and assumptive statement. Just because you appreciate the methods of magic tricks to the extent you are expressing, that doesn't mean you can make the generalization that the same mentality applies to others. Not trying to be negative, just being honest.
