Respect isn't gained through violence, it's gained through diplomacy. Fear is gained through violence and stupid people tend to confuse fear with respect because they don't understand deeper than surface level cause and effect. Fear gained through violence is unstable, and it's only a matter of time before the fear changes from compliance to resentment to rage and revolt. You would always have to be looking over your shoulder and escalating the violence to respond to each time a barrier is inevitably tested. Respect and trust through diplomacy is a far more stable position of power, but that requires a high level of emotional and social intelligence.

Respect isn't gained through violence, it's gained through diplomacy. Fear is gained through violence and stupid people tend to confuse fear with respect because they don't understand deeper than surface level cause and effect. Fear gained through violence is unstable, and it's only a matter of time before the fear changes from compliance to resentment to rage and revolt. You would always have to be looking over your shoulder and escalating the violence to respond to each time a barrier is inevitably tested. Respect and trust through diplomacy is a far more stable position of power, but that requires a high level of emotional and social intelligence.
