Stellar playing!
I am buying one of these. 1/3 the price of a similar Martin and the tone is every bit as good!
Just curious. Did you end up getting one? I'm saving for the FXG5, and hopefully I'll be able to find one. I have to tell you, that your calculus above is incorrect, if these guitar are as good as everyone says they are. the Yamahas are better .... Okay, I have a 90s FG 441s that I will put up against most new Martin guitars, and it would win. Needs some fretwork, but it would win. It took about a decade of daily playing for it to open up, but when it did, look out! Int is amazing.I've had so many people come to my house and, the collectors curl their lip in a sneer. "That can't be any good at all, Especially compared to my $5k Martin. Then they hear it, and offer me obscene amounts of money to buy it off of me. I telll them to go find their own. So many Yamaha acoustics through the years have been amazing. It's easy to find one. Mine is getting ready to go into semi retirement. My FG just needs a rest and some attention from a luthier who will take on the job. Few luthiers are willing to put $500 with of work into a guitar that was $350 and would probably sell on Reverb for half that. Yamaha is sadly overlooked, and simultaneously one of the most prolific manufacturers of all time. Shroedinger's guitar. During that time, I will buy myself a "nice guitar" just to treat myself. I deserve it. I'm especially interested in doing stuff with the pickup system and effects.

Yes, I got it an FS5 a few months ago. I stand by my statement. It is an outstanding guitar. The ARE top gives it a broken in tone. It is the perfect mix of vintage woody tone with a touch of modern sustain. Set up and playability are perfect out of the case.
@@lesjohns4359 I agree, my buddy has a fg5 and It sounds like a vintage Yamaha but without the cons of an actual vintage guitar.
My perfect guitar, love this size, sound and components. Might have to change my FS850 for this FS5. Bone nut, bone saddle, bone bridge pins, wood pick-guard - there doesn't seem to be any plastic on this guitar.
FS5 bridge pins are ebony, and the pickguard *IS* plastic not wood.
Have one - great guitar, every aspect!
Beautiful playing....sweet guitar
Beautiful playing
Yamaha should put you on contingency. Stellar tone, and excellent performance. Wow. I really want one now.
Beautiful sounding guitar ..great playing ..beautiful
Sublime playing, sir. If I had one of these guitars I’d happily swap it for your skills and an old beater.
I want one so badly
Same.

Anyone who has held this up against e.g. a Martin 00018? I love my dear OM-21 but I would really like a OM size mahogany guitar. Maybe this is it?
give us a call and one of our sales folks will be happy to talk you through one!
Absolutely love mine, and I've had it for about 8 months now. I was "this close" to getting a 000-18, having played them a lot since the newer version was released, and I'm glad I held off. I simply couldn't justify the price difference after playing the FS-5. Very warm and woody, and an unexpected vintage tone right out of the box (love the A.R.E treatment).
Try one if you can, but they're hard to find. These guitars don't seem to last long in the stores, and now I know why.
@@davek00, thanks for advice. There's only ONE music shop here in Denmark which has the Red Label series. I called them yesterday and they said that there's ONE FSX5 left. Only one hour's drive away from my house. That's a no brainer. I'm gonna try it and bring my OM-21 for a comparison.
Mikkel Julius I'm curious what your opinion of the guitar will be. I'll admit that I prefer mahogany to rosewood (I also have a Martin D-15m). I don't know what style you play, but something to be aware of is that Yamaha's string spacing is a little more snug than what you might expect with a 1 3/4 nut. Not much, but worth mentioning. Might be a factor if you play fingerstyle, which I do. If you play with a pick, you may be surprised by how well this guitar projects for it's body size. Then again, maybe not if you already have an OM-21.
One last thing, this guitar ships with Elixers, which so many guitars these days do. I'm not much of a fan, and prefer uncoated phosphor bronze. I'm liking the DR Rares that I have on now.
Good luck to you on your test.
@@davek00, I spent several hours with the FSX5 in the music store yesterday. I had my OM-21 with me to make an A/B test. Firstly I would say that the Yamaha just looks stunning. If you're in for the vintage look and feel, this is surely the guitar for you. The lacquer has been sanded down so it felt like a Gibson True Vintage. And the mahogany/spruce combo is just so mojo and nice. In terms of sound I was surprised. This guitar has a great balance from bottom to top. You can feel and hear that Yamaha's new x bracing has enhanced the bottom and mids. But the treble is still there. And the tone is very vintage compared to e.g. a Yamaha LL/LS. However I was a bit disappointed of the Elixir Strings. My OM-21 has Martin Authentic Strings on it so maybe it's not a fair comparison. But I played them side by side and the Martin OM is a bit more deep/boomy in the bass and shimmering in the high strings. Then again, the Martin is twice as expensive as the FSX5 and it's a rosewood back and sides. Still the Yamaha can hold it's ground against a Martin. Very impressive tonal balance and actually both a great strummer and fingerpicker. Great allround guitar. The neck is slightly more beefy/round than the oval tape performance reck on my OM-21. But nothing I couldn't get used to. Other than that the feel of the Yamaha is very close to a high-end Martin. FSX5 = A very good choice and I'm considering to buy this guitar.
What strings are you using ?
Great performance, great guitar, bad mic placement
I have great computer speakers and even cranked to 100 I could barely hear a thing. Don't know how all these people are saying they hear something great...
@@PaulCypert if you can find one, play it. It is a stellar instrument. I was playing one at H.B. Woodsongs in Boulder and couldn't believe I had a $1500 guitar in my hands. I'm not a picky tone guy either, having owned and played carbon fiber guitars and fine sounding sub-$1K guitars (and currently own a $600 guitar that I'm in love with). So, do I think the FS5 is the "best" sounding? Only your ears can tell you that, but I'm guessing it would blow you away. It is an animal for the size, and turned a few heads in the shop when I was playing it, and I'm only a mediocre player. :)
Fine playing. But it hardly gives a wide sampling of how the guitar sounds. How about strumming a little and including more traditional finger style?
Couldn't hear it. Turn up the volume doood
Great guitar and great player, but bad recording! Go listen to the Guitar Gallery demo of the FSX5 (same guitar but with electronics). RUclips won't allow links, but that video is well recorded and will provide a better idea of how this guitar really sounds.
Could you get less volume from a close up mic? Why isn't it pointing at the guitar? If it were pointing at the guitar, I might be able to hear what the guitar sounded like - which is, you know, sort of the point of a video like this . . .
I was wondering if I was the only person listening to an off-mic guitar.

Hard to think of shittier audio recording.
the music zoo is the most annoying company on reverb. hundreds of posts for guitars that aren't even in stock. worse, they click bait with low prices that can't even be honored. go away music zoo.
Really? I heard they're a good company
