This is so discrimanatory. I've worked as an independent contractor and licensed manicurist for over 40 years! I've written and submitted my letters to those you've suggested. Fingers crossed. I'm not ready to retire.....yet!
At a local salon, there are 5 manicurists. One has a cosmetology license and isn't affected. The other 4 are going guerrilla (home and travel). Since the only way to work from home legally is the space must have a separate entrance to the home salon, many will do it under the table. That includes cash or Zelle only. California outsmarted themselves, again.
So if you have a cosmologist license than you can still booth rent, it’s what I’m getting at by watching the video. If you just went to school to be a manicure you can no longer booth rent but will either become a regular employee or rent a suite? But if you have a cosmology license than you can still both rent?
We just started a nail collective in hawaii because we have quite a few independent artists. This is an interesting conversation to bring up. One common comment that comes up is the amount of money we invest to start is much higher than other beauty services...colors. equipment, space etc. You definitely dont start as an independent provider to make the money 😂
Does this apply to salon suites? I don’t know what the difference is with booth rent in an established salon vs private suites. Im halfway through school to get my manicurist license and this feels like its going to be a major diversion from my upcoming plan 😭
I want to say that somewhere in the middle of the video Jaime explains this. It does not apply to salon suite owners, but if you wanted to rent your studio/sub-lease then things can get technical. Worth a listen.
I believe nail services by independents and properly set up salons are where they are now because up until approx 8 years ago non-standard salons set the bar on prices so low and undercut each other’s prices so bad that services got to a point were acrylic nails were $15 and a mani pedi was $25. The industry is recuperating from 20 years of not being able to compete and have a real career in nails. 🤷🏻♀️

Prices are going to go up and rightfully so!

We saw how California regarded Manicurist’s during the pandemic and this is another serious blow.
Aahh know 🫨
Yep! The governor said covid in California was started in a nail salon. I lost around 20% of my business because of that stupid comment.
@@lynnmontour3169 You remember that! I thought I was dreaming!
@@kristineohara8140 you can goggle it. It's still on the L.A. news channels.

Excellent and informative video as always Paola. Thank you Jaime for all of your advocacy for us in the industry. You’re an inspiration 🫶🏼
I remember when I first heard of waterless pedicures and it was at a session that Jaime gave about 11 yrs ago at Nail Tech Event at the Smokies
awesome to hear that & I first met Jaime at the Premiere Birmingham show when I took her Waterless Spa Pedi class back in 2008 or 2009!
So I have a Cosmetology license. I do nails services only. So am I not allowed to booth rent ?
In the video we explained this. Yes YOU can.

I don't understand WHY prices have increased so much! I understand going up a little, but many things have doubled!

Good job by both of you!
Hi Jill! Thank you for watching!
Does this affect renting your own private suite from say Phenix or Sola?
No. As mentioned in the video, when you lease a suite/office under your own establishment license you are a salon owner.
Omg these didn't get enough attention!!!
The hierarchy in the beauty industry.
