I think it is called the Shisha dance, I've seen a much better clip of it on youtube. It is one of Fifi's most famous & loved dance routines which does involve her smoking a shisha pipe!
1:34 ... my paternal great-grandmother is doing her best steam train impersonation with the smoke ... boy does she look like my grandmother ... i think she has been kidnapped and separated from her 3 daughters and her husband frank robertson at the time of this footage ... he built train tracks and the trains for the tracks and the ports and much more across the globe until the invading cannibals stopped us and killed us and it continues for me to this very day here in belconnen canberra "australia" ...
I am trying to work out the date of this footage. My great-grandfather and great-grandmother were re-united after she was released from the kidnappings decades on in her late 80's. I knew them both. On my father's side of the family. Is it before she meets him, or is it after the kidding in Queensland (Townsville?). Anyone want to contact me or who needs to contact me, do it. My Facebook page is linked to my 3 RUclips channels. I am 46 years of age.
Actually, I was wrong in one aspect. This white gallabiya is more men's clothing, just like the scull cap. But working class women do wear similar dresses.
The flow and beauty of movement and fabric were always part of what I loved in belly dancing...all of this is ruined. It's like listening to Opera with ear muffs on - muted and illogical. When will Muslim culture realize that if men are the problem because they cannot "control" themselves - according to so many of the edicts given to restrict women - then men with this problem should be castrated...problem solved.
I don't know if her tunic is supposed to be so iconic that it ruins anything. She might have been requested to wear it, depending on the occasion. We westerners are the ones that have come up with the term belly-dancing, and what we are accustomed to is a very narrow definition. Consider that this dancing has such a long history with many varied expressions of performance. So don't let it ruin your day. Instead, let's all learn a little more about it. Invest ourselves in understanding, or stand back and pronounce judgement.
Oriental dance is done in all sorts of costumes, each style has it's own style of clothes and what she's wearing is actually very close to the traditional dresses/gallabiyas Arabic Egyptian women (Muslim and Christian alike) wore and wear outside their homes. Since this dance originates amongst the people, so does the dress. The bra-belt-suit is, however beautiful some of its versions are, NOT authentic - made up in the West for glitz, show and sensation. Oriental dance is a dance from the Egypt, the Middle Eastern Arab countries, Turkey and Iran and is danced by Muslims, christians, Jews and Bahais. It's not a "Muslim" or "Islamic" dance. Arab Muslims are only 15% of all the Muslims in the world. Indonesia is the biggest Muslim country, Pakistan the second biggest country and the majority of Muslims live in south-east and south-Asia. In none of the South-East and South-Asian countries, nor the many West-African and East-African Muslim countries, or the countries of the Maghreb (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libiya) Oriental dance is indigenous.
She's rather clumsy. Can't she play zills ? I dated a girl that was a classically trained ballerina besides being an excellent belly dancer and her zills playing was unmatched ! She is Jewish (my friend). BTW: high heels will distort a belly dancer's movements ! What's with the high heels ... This girl on the video reminds me of Ellen DeGeneres danceing on her TV show. BTW you don't need a belly to belly dance ... you just need to know how to move !
Damn, I didn't know Ms. Abdo got down like that; hookah piece balanced on her head and everything. I wish I were at this fun-ass looking party!

She is great and shows it is really all about the music so you can sort of still keep your clothes on and be great! ha ha!
This came to me on my Facebook.

Aha--so now I learn something. Thank you, Fatima!

if you've never seen a folkloric costume, maybe you should keep your mouth shut. not all dancers dance in bedleh all the time. nor are we required to.
You need to get educated first . This is the typical baladi and saidi attire . Please shut up

In Egypt it's not "zills" it's Sagat. and most egyptian dancers don't use them, they mostly have a sagat player in their band.
@Raven Wrath anti-Semite detected. Typical.
What is the name of the song playing?
