The latter part stands true because many countries during the 90s had a Karen Smith view on gays, so gays weren't okay if they are not in a family relationship.

Kirsten still did a great job as Zoisite in my book. Now that's a laugh that you can set your watch to. As for the whole brouhaha with the gender switch... don't get it twisted, but design-wise, Zoisite looked feminine enough to pass off as female, so it worked. For Fish-Eyes, not so much.
@@earthbornparanian6252 I'd say Fish-Eye was the most girly male in Sailor Moon history. So weird as a feminine boy, he was portrayed as female in most dubs of Sailor Moon. Agree with you, but it’s sad there are still some people that have ONLY watched the old dub and when they hear his new voice they say “he is supposed to be a she” because they haven’t watched the original Japanese version or read the manga
Hi folks. I directed the original English dubs of Sailor Moon and I am extremely proud of the performers' work. I haven't seen much of the new version, but what I have seen is quite good. Please understand that it was quite a different political climate in the '90's, and we did what we had to do. Read my book "Sailor Moon Reflections" and you will understand. Roland Parliament.
Roland Parliament I liked the DiC dub and Cloverway dub both! With the new re dub they sound way to bland. That almost all the character's sound a like in voices now.
The big boss has spoken and the SJW's shall bow down! Who am I kidding.. that probably won't happen but it's pretty cool to hear from the one and only +Roland Parliament! Understandably it was a different time then. I have posted a few times on my own Sailor Moon blog that changing Zoisite's gender actually changed the dynamic of the character in many of the scenes, and created this badass chick who Kirsten did a great job lending her voice to. Zoisite and Zoycite are really two different characters in my mind, and to me they're both great!
Are you really Roland? That's pretty cool to see someone who worked on the original Dub posts around here and saw the fruits of his work and present incarnations. I did enjoy DiC's take, not too much of Cloverway's voice directions, but at least Cloverway did keep the original score, although I found DiC's score to be just as good for the time.
Welcome to RUclips, Roland! How's the Canadian Melvin doing these days? I always thought you would get more voice work since I thought you had a decent amount of range.

I know a lot of people say that changing Zoisite to a woman for the English dub was homophobic (and let's face it, even though it was understandable at the time, it _was_), but I really love the character they created by doing so. I'm not saying that changing him to a female was right, but it _did_ create a very interesting person in the process. Zoisite is awesome, no doubt about it, but the English version (I guess we can call her Zoycite, haha) is really cool as well. Hell, the English dub's version of the character is one of the reasons why I consider Zoisite to be one of my favorites from the series, let alone out of the four Shitennou. She left quite an impression on childhood me. But thanks to having access to the Japanese dub later on in my life, I was able to appreciate the character the way they were originally intended as well. I'm thankful for that. Sorry for the ramble, but I just really wanted to say this.
I don't understand why DIC modified the Shitennou names. They were kinda sloppy about it anyway. Most of the characters would call her Zoycite, but you'd catch Nephrite calling her Zoisite, for example. Anyway, I thought Zoisite was pretty awesome in the old anime. I felt (s)he got more accomplished than the other three combined.
I read a theory that the script writers/translators may have not actually known these names were supposed to be mineral names, which would explain the weirdly bumbled "Jed-ite" and "Neph-lite" and the spelling of Zoycite (although that was at least phonetically correct), until they realized they needed an alternate for Kunzite, which prompted them to actually turn to geology for the answer. This would make sense - maybe they were so consumed with the translation and looking for potential phonetic pitfalls (ie - the l and r transposition in Nephlite).
I find it kind of sad, seeing that three of Beryl's minions died finding some form of love. I do like that, Zoisite's feelings towards Kunzite are reciprocated, and when Kunzite dies he merely wishes he ends up in the same place as his beloved. This show really does have the whole "Love comes in many different forms" kind of message... Sadly, it's only in the Japanese and uncut English Dub of Sailor Moon.
Kirsten Bishop was absolutely delightful as Zoisite. She definitely injected way more personality into the character than any of the male voice actors. I'm not one for censorship whatsoever, but Kirsten's depiction was my favorite out of the generals.
Yeah, I think I liked the late Kristen Bishop a lot more when she voiced Green Esmeraude/Emerald in Sailor Moon R, Kaorinite in Sailor Moon S and Lady Badyannu from Sailor Moon SuperS the Movie than in this season as the original English voice of Zoisite. God, rest your soul, Ms. Bishop.
@@earthbornparanian6252 Rebecca Shoichet was a great replacement to Kristen Bishop even if the latter passed away. I remember when I first learned Zoisite was a man....haha, I was so confused. I'm gay myself so it's not as if it would have bothered me, but I STILL love the female Zoycite even though I know it's just due to censoring. Zoisite was my favourite, even though he had bratty attitude 😂😂😂 Keiichi for sure 1:00 Solveig song... So you're going to still deny those two were lovers?
If there's anything to blame for Zoisite becoming a tomboy in the DiC dub, it's the FCC. For the 90s, all anime and video games localized outside of Japan stayed true to social norms. That was because most people associated everything form Japan to something you see in rated R movies. All this censorship happened because it wasn't well known at the time, didn't think that any immigrant from their country has been to Japan, didn't think that older audiences watch cartoons and play video games, and/or didn't think that content in the Japanese version would be enjoyable by younger audiences.
Lucien Dodge's Zoisite rocks. I'm extremely disappointed in the original English dub, because it was done with the express purpose of erasure and straight-washing. I get that it was dubbed in the 90s, where homophobia was far more widespread, but come on. The sexualities of Kunzite and Zoisite are not the most interesting thing abut them and it's never made out to be a big deal (as in, nobody freaks out about these gay dudes) in the original text of the anime.
+Katie Luke I don't blame Kristen Bishop for this; that falls on the feet of the localizers. Kristen did an awesome job with what she had. Lucien's Zoisite is great for what the Viz dub was shooting for, which is a totally faithful dub from the Japanese original.
Yaaay my favorite Shitennou~ Kinda weird knowing that Zoicite has the same voice actor as Umino...Then again Zoicite has the same voice as another character in both English iterations of Sailor Moon, this is just the weirdest difference. Can't wait for more videos! Keep up the good work~
Kirsten's performance is ingrained in my brain forever due to nostalgia, but I did really love Lucien's acting as well! It's how Zoisite should have originally sounded in the dub.
Random fact: the villain Zoisite from sailor Moon was actually a male..(blonde) In America they fucked up the entire story line and made him a female because they weren't big on LGBT Community being public lol. I mean... people back in the 80's and 90's and the whole 2000's decade would've feared that the LGBT+ people would spread STD's, AIDS and HIV's all over the place.
Zoisite as a genderbender idea with Kirsten makes me laugh, I know he's supposed to be a pretty effeminate gay guy, but I guess the 90s back then was more into cousins dating, and genderbending "metros" :P. At least Cloverway kept the original music, but most of their voices were even worse than DiC's. I've watched Sailor Moon in both original and English dubs. Original Sailor Moon was out for love, DiC's Sailor Moon was out for justice. Original Sailor Moon was a huge crybaby. DiC's Sailor Moon actually toned that down and made her more of a ditz than a wailer. (If you ask me, that's even better than Usagi crying out her eardrums~ I know DiC also had her cry lots, but not as loud or as much.)
@Brianna Bombshell Random fact: you sound rather ignorant. Gay marriage was *LEGALIZED in Canada in 2005* All rights under the law. Gay marriage is still *ILLEGAL in Japan as of 2020* There is public support for it and there is really not that much hostility towards the lgtbq community writ large but you aren't recognized under the law and you still cant adopt as same sex couples. Shows how petty and childish Japan is. It's almost as if they have such a issue with gay people, as if not being heterosexual is shameful or bad lol. Meanwhile Canada broke a lot of ground for gay rights through their entertainment media in the 80s and 90s (Degrassi, Ready or Not, Kids in the Hall, Drag Scene, KD Lang, Tegan and Sara, SAILOR MOON, etc) But I digress, you are soo utterly woke and outraged on everyone's behalf, it must get very tiresome. Psst I'm mentioning Canada bc that's where Sailor Moon was first dubbed and broke to North American markets. Also why stop at female nudity during the 7:30 am and after school 3:30pm blocks of kids tv programming? They do that ALL THE TIME NOW right??? In between Peppa Pig and Baby Shark, right? Steven Universe and Adventure Time did that right? Full frontal nudity during saturday morning cartoons, right? They should show the tentacle bondage stuff and low key pedophilicular content with Mamoru too, right? Kids should be exposed to nudity and sex earlier on, right? Let's throw in the kamikaze suicides and gun wielding children too. (1996 in Scotland's first and last school shooting where 16 little children the age of Chibiusa were shot and killed by a gunman. Same time they dubbed that arc in Sailor Moon.) Shows how petty and childish they are, as if guns are shameful and bad lol. They shouldve just kept the guns and suicide in. I love how you distort reality and manipulate facts to suit your warped narrative. If you want an actual *AMERICAN* example. 3 years after Sailor Moon debuted in Canada in 1995, Ellen Degeneres came out on her tv show in 1998. Late night prime time. For ADULTS. Live action. No gay relationships, no kissing, no sex. She simply uttered just 2 words. "I'm gay". Her hit tv show was then quickly cancelled. About this same time, in America, Mathew Sheppard was tortured, tied to a fence, and killed for being gay, leading to the hate crimes prevention act. But ya, boo, they didn't give sailor moon boobs or show full on transgendered romantic relationships back in 1995 in an anime marketed to children as a kids cartoon show in North America. Soo shock!!!! Booooo!!! By the way, gay marriage became legal stateside in 2015. It's 2020 now, can you please tell Japan to stop being so "petty and childish"?

Some people call it cliché or melodramatic but I love it! Anyway, Zoicite as a male just doesn't sound right (except for the Viz media dub...the character actually does sound pretty convincing as a guy because his voice is very soft & mellow...all the other male voice actors portray the character as masculine).

Ikr? Soo normal they still can't get married in Japan or adopt children of their own as gay couples as of 2020, nearly 30 years later. But hey they got cool gay anime so....that's a plus. Equality is overrated anyway. Raised in Canada, we legalized gay marriage in summer of 2005. Over 15 years ago. Full rights and protection under the law. Marry the person you love.
Did you fight for LGBTQ and black people’s equality? Fight for your own people before you criticize other countries. I was just saying how I felt about gay and lesbian scenes as a child and I wasn’t arguing about human rights.
@@Kannah22 yes we all did. From what i understand, Japanese overwhemingly support it privately but publicly remain silent/indifferent (citizens, elected officials, political leaders, etc). As a sub watcher, I'm actually a huge fan of Lucien Dodge's performance as Zoisite. Though I'm not a fan of the SM English dubs overall, I didn't mind watching with Lucien's voice during the Zoisite Arc. Still sad he died.
The censoring reason to recast Zoisite as a female is indeed unfortunate, one of my few nitpicks of the old dub, but Zoisite being a female villain is admirable. A kickass female villain, it's nice. As opposed to just Queen Beryl at the time. But again, the censoring factor is a bummer.
There are a few character settings that have been changed in DiC Dub. In DiC Dub Zoycite was monitoring Nephrite on Queen Beryl's orders, but the Japanese version is different. In the Japanese version, Zoisite was spying on Nephrite at Kunzite's behest. In episode 23, there is a scene where Nephrite asks Zoisite, " Kunzite sent you here to spy on me, didn't he?" Kunzite and Nephrite have an adversarial relationship, and Kunzite and Zoisite are trying to unseat Nephrite. The reason Zoisite doesn't get along with Nephrite is because Zoisite adores Kunzite.
Oh this is precious! *chuckling* Zoisite is actually a girly boy in the original series just another similar character from Escaflone! Oh good Lord!! 😂😂😂
So does she for me as well! I always wanted a recurring female minion of Queen Beryl, and Zoisite felt like the perfect fit. I personally wished Zoisite was a female and lesbian for Sailor Mercury before even Sailors Uranus and Neptune came along.

Kirsten Bishop was really good for a female version of the character.
I have to give this one to Luicen Dodge. Had Zoisite been a woman I could give it to Kirsten,I think her voice could have worked for Koan or Berthier or even Petz or Queen Beryl with her Green Esmeraude voice
in the Dic Dub.
RIP Kirsten
I really enjoy both Kirsten Bishop and Lucien Doge. I think I will always think of them almost as 2 separate characters because I loved female Zoisite growing up and everything that "she" implied. I loved that she was taken as seriously as the boys, was dressed just like them, was a formidable foe, wasn't the subject of sexist jokes (for the most part). Of course, after I discovered the internet, I found that this was all because "she" had been a man all along XD I was disappointed but... "she" still lives on in my inner child. And I like the original Zoisite a lot too- specifically with Lucien Doge's voice. I like him more in English than in Japanese for some reason.
Libra0Rising Libra0Rising Your comment is quite a while ago already, but can I just say that I love it so much? I support LGBT so I don't like the reason DIC changed his gender, but the female Zoisite is so interesting for the reasons you listed above.

True
@@misakiayuzawa4402 Yep, Zoisite was a transgender female like Fish-Eye because they we known to be effeminate men and they had to be female because they didn't want to spoil the fact that they are gay to children when it was first dubbed in English. We know by know that's not true but they were treated that way because the producers at the time were not sure America could handle mature content in anime and video games especially Sailor Moon which was made for the wrong audience when it was first dubbed in English.
But i love Zoisite as a boy....he's very handsome...and i love Keiichi Nanba voice as a Zoisite
@@mediamedia3231 Zoisite is actually a boy. In many dubs, Zoisite is a male. For the 90s, many localizations had to make gays in a family relationship or they get a gender change. I never liked how the 90s society was very xenophobic and homophobic. The latter part stands true because many countries during the 90s had a Karen Smith view on gays, so gays weren't okay if they are not in a family relationship.

I honestly think that Zoisite's death in Viz was way better than the original Japanese. Keiichi Nanba's scream sounded more like an opera singer hitting a high note. Lucien made an actual scream of pain.
I agree. Lucien's scream sounded more manly compared to the previous actors.

Kirsten still did a great job as Zoisite in my book. Now that's a laugh that you can set your watch to. As for the whole brouhaha with the gender switch... don't get it twisted, but design-wise, Zoisite looked feminine enough to pass off as female, so it worked. For Fish-Eyes, not so much.
yeah, Fish-Eyes is just a whole can of messed-up...
Zoisite looks androgynous to me. Too feminine for a boy but to masculine for a girl. Fisheye is really feminine looking however
Things went downhill once Fisheye ripped off "her" dress and not wearing an undershirt. lol
@@earthbornparanian6252 I'd say Fish-Eye was the most girly male in Sailor Moon history. So weird as a feminine boy, he was portrayed as female in most dubs of Sailor Moon. Zoisite was female in the DiC dub just because they didn't want kids to know that he was gay and the producers at the time when it was dubbed in the 90's were afraid of being scolded by parents for keeping mature content in kids shows that would scar children for life. Seeing Zoisite as a male surprised everyone, Zoisite was meant to be a male just like Fish-Eye.
@@GardevoirBoy Different time different worlds. I'm a gay man who watched all versions, but still prefer DiC.

+Roland Parliament Holy crap Ron Parliament! Melvin!
Viz Media had the best one in my opinion. AND THEY KEPT HIM MALE YEY!

While it's pretty lame that Zoicite was changed into a girl in the DiC dub, I honestly thought Kristen Bishop performed rather well. Hilarious evil laughs and really nailed the role, aside from the death... mumble? That was kinda bad, but otherwise good.
The weird music (they replaced solveigs song wtf) and some parts of the death (I want to die beautifully, zoi crying and admitting he loved Kunzite) were cut out, so that take on zois death was horrible (don’t forget me...ahh)

Mitochondria Raine Yes!! I agree completely.
This would make sense - maybe they were so consumed with the translation and looking for potential phonetic pitfalls (ie - the l and r transposition in Nephlite).
well I just found out Zoicite was a man, not a woman this morning and it kind of made my whole child a lie. 😂😶
Regardless Zoicite was a snappy bitch in both English and Japanese and I loved him
I find it kind of sad, seeing that three of Beryl's minions died finding some form of love.
Beryl was originally in love with Endymion...when villains love everything goes wrong doesn’t it

@@earthbornparanian6252 Rebecca Shoichet was a great replacement to Kristen Bishop even if the latter passed away. In fact, Rebecca Shoichet's voice is nearly identical to Kirsten Bishop's just pitch-shifted to sound tomboyish.
Lucien Dodge is my fave
RIP Kirsten Bishop
Back in the day as a teen I always wondered why zoisite had a guys body and not a females form I thought it was the uniform .
Nanba Keiichi will ALWAYS be it for me, but Lucien Dodge did well too, IMO.
This is why the Viz media dub is better
Yaaay my favorite Shitennou~ Kinda weird knowing that Zoicite has the same voice actor as Umino...Then again Zoicite has the same voice as another character in both English iterations of Sailor Moon, this is just the weirdest difference.

The legendary Kirsten Bishop.
Wait a minute - Zoisite was a guy all along?! I guess Japan was a lot more accepting of gays/feminine-looking guys back then than we were.
Still though, I like DiC's take on the character, and the late Kirsten Bishop's voice for him/her, even if it meant a gender-swap.
Random fact: the villain Zoisite from sailor Moon was actually a male..(blonde) In America they fucked up the entire story line and made him a female because they weren't big on LGBT Community being public lol. Yup you are one of those people
Yeah yeaj learn people learn
I mean... people back in the 80's and 90's and the whole 2000's decade would've feared that the LGBT+ people would spread STD's, AIDS and HIV's all over the place.
Zoisite as a genderbender idea with Kirsten makes me laugh, I know he's supposed to be a pretty effeminate gay guy, but I guess the 90s back then was more into cousins dating, and genderbending "metros" :P.
Still, on the other hand, Lucien is an excellent call. I think he gets Zoisite's personality down to the Kei!

Oh i know, but that doesn't bother me Zoisite was a girl in this one. As people and *DiC* themselves said, it was a different time.
@@TanorFauxofOltanis cousins was a cloverway conception in the year 2000. How did you miss that glaring detail?

It's 2020 now, can you please tell Japan to stop being so "petty and childish"?

chilvari I like him better as a male he was originally suppose to be a gay male so why change it in the original and VIZ Kunzite and Zoisite relationship was so beautiful and the voice actor was like a touch of feminine and a small amount of masculinity I'll forever want him to stay a male
Plus his scream at 4:24 was much better than Kristen I love both of them but I prefer the male version
He’s a effeminate boy
Zoisite is a man, so you cant prefer him as a woman if he's not a woman.
Can I mention that the Nephrite in the DiC dub sounds like he has something stuck in his throat XD
Or like batman XD
He sounds like a 40 year old chain smoker even though he’s 19
90s anime Zoisite is my favorite of all his incarnations!
I was born and raised in japan. And I was obsessed with sailor moon when I was 4 and I thought gays and lesbians were normal things.
@@RecoveringChristian savage. well at least a lot of us aren’t religious so no one complained about gay and lesbian scenes.
@@Kannah22 no one fought for their rights to love and be loved either.
So, you get really cool super gay anime, but no equality under the law in real life. For Canadian children it's LITERALLY been a normal thing for 15 years.
Kirsten was WONDERFUL!!
You do know that Zoi’s actually an effeminate boy though, right (they’re called the four heavenly kings not three kings and one queen)
@@sparklegirl1006 they know. They just really love the DiC dub. Trust me I've seen their comments everywhere.
@@荒巻正男 you're right. DiC's adaption means everything to me
@@sparklegirl1006 I already know that about Zoicite OK lol Kirsten's voice for her just stuck with me all these years
In the Viz dub, he’s Leon from Fire Emblem Echoes and Felix from Three Houses.
やれやれ... Illumi Zoldyck's voice (Masaya's) lured me here. This is some strong voice Hatsu right here!
Lucien Dodge my favorite
In episode 23, there is a scene where Nephrite asks Zoisite, " Kunzite sent you here to spy on me, didn't he?"
Kunzite and Nephrite have an adversarial relationship, and Kunzite and Zoisite are trying to unseat Nephrite.
The reason Zoisite doesn't get along with Nephrite is because Zoisite adores Kunzite.
Oh this is precious! *chuckling* Zoisite is actually a girly boy in the original series just another similar character from Escaflone! Oh good Lord!! 😂😂😂
The DIC version Zoisite game me Azula vibes
So I wasn't the only one who got reminded of Azula from her.
So does she for me as well! I always wanted a recurring female minion of Queen Beryl, and Zoisite felt like the perfect fit. I personally wished Zoisite was a female and lesbian for Sailor Mercury before even Sailors Uranus and Neptune came along.
Lucien also played a flamboyant effeminate archer named Leon from Fire Emblem Echoes.
TMX1138 he also plays Felix
