Why the Kristaps Porzingis Trade is Actually Genius

- The Kristaps Porzingis trade took the NBA by storm last night, with the Boston Celtics sending Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for two first round picks, and the Washington Wizards receiving Tyus Jones in the trade.
The fact that it had to be a Marcus Smart trade is sure to leave Celtics fans in shambles, but I truthfully don't think you should be too upset about what you got for him. Porzingis is gonna do a lot for Boston, and his playmaking ability is actually a perfect fit alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. See the Boston Celtics trade away such an important piece of the core is sad, but this might be what the Celtics need to get over the hump.
And I'm sure not too many people care, BUT after the Bradley Beal trade and now the Kristaps Porzingis trade and getting Tyus Jones in return, I think the Wizards are doing a fantastic job of kickstarting their rebuild.

an underrated part of what porzingis is adding to the Celtics is his playmaking running dribble handoffs around the mid and high post will be able to create a lot of easy looks for everyone especially tatum and jaylen brown cutting on the opposite side of where porzingis is at or around him for easy shots at the rim
Gotta score 130 to win with no D
@@killemkilluaCeltics still have defense thi
@@killemkilluaporzingis is a good rim protector and decent defender overall. Brown and Tatum are great defenders too, and they still have horford and Williams so there's not much they are losing on defense
He only averaging 2 assist but I see what u mean it may go up to 4 being traded there
0:34 0:53 2:35
Anything that reduces the amount of times that Jaylen Brown has to create a shot is a win for Boston.
This is such a underrated comment
Butterfingers Brown is gonna be a happy man.
I STILL CANT BELIEVE..Jaylen is second team ALL NBA… and the only scouting report that you have to put out there to pretty much slow him down is “ take away his right hand” . It still blows my mind.
as well as the less time horford is on the court as well. they gotta find a deal to drop his contract.
watch out, brown stans might attack you
As a celtics fan I will miss Marcus smart as he is the highest effort basketball player I've ever seen but I wish him the best the grizzlies are an excellent landing spot for him
He fills that Dillon Brooks role but actually decent on offense.
@@JazzYachtrocker so a 6'3 draymond?
6'3" draymond with a better shot. and some skill in the post. grizzlies fans gonna love him
and handles
Highest flopping effort you mean
KP fan here. I really hated the Mavs they didnt maximize KPs offensive skills but then his injuries also was a factor. Hope he do wonders in Boston.
I wish we would’ve kept him but oh well
He had a shooting slump when he was there too.
Getting the best player and 2 1st rounders? Holy W Brad Stevens
Also, that KP post scoring is bonkers. Back on his last season in NY I think he was near the absolute bottom of the league. What a turnaround, especially through constant injury.
He's also 27 so while you COULD attribute his improvements as w one year thing he's also just now hitting his prime and growing into his body.
So, ideally, he'll be more of a headache for the likes of Bam and Jokic than just Horford?
Sometimes the best defense is to make the other teams best player play defense.... Am I following this correctly??
@@jordankelley8894 absolutely. He also stretches the floor at an elite level so the Jays and the smalls will have more room to cook.
What playing Luka ball does to a mf
KP + 2 1st rnd picks for Smart. You cant get any better deal than that. It is a win IMO.
Porzingis is way better at defense recently as well. He used to be kind of a liability, but from every range last season, opponents shot worse than average with KP as their primary defender. His numbers in that regard rival Jarret Freaking Allen.
KP just needs to stay around the basket, he gets absolutely torched when he's forced to try to keep up w/ swift guards outside the key.
How many games did he actually play?
@@Taylzz65 and the wizards shut him down for the last few games and he played elite defense last year
KP was never liability on defence, dont give me this crap. His def has got better because he got smarter.
Love this trade for Boston as a big man is needed ,but it will only work if JT and JB will dribble less and play more team ball
Robert is great defensively and Horford is good but is getting old so less minutes the better. Offensive they can get 3 happy but I don't think KP fixes that. The only thing KP maybe helps with is getting the ball out of Brown and Tatum's hands but even then I feel like it is going to turn out a lot like Dallas where they make him a spot up shooter.
Post passing hub is a nice term. Porzingis trade was immensely good
Their defense will improve. Rim protection changes offenses. This was a fantastic trade. Smart was ranked 27th out of pgs.
not sure how he was ranked 27th. not a lot of weak pgs but i wouldnt expect smart at 27. early 20s maybe.
KP is terrible . Idk why all of a sudden everyone loves him. He barely made his mark on a poor wizards team, Luka & the mavs couldnt stand him because he was 7’3 playing like a 6’2 rookie , I think his exposure is Boston will help everyone see he’s not the same player ppl think of during his NY tenure

@@bns434 I dont know what you smoke, but that is heavy shit!!!
I'm gonna miss Smart but most of our fans definitely have selective memory right now when it comes to his play. He loved Boston and that is what I will miss him for. We're a better team now though.
@kanajingly8957 eh you know how some people have rose colored glasses on. MS had some great moments but also a lot of lowlights too, terrible shot selection and outrageously bad turnovers. With Derrick White and Brogdon performing so well Smart became expendable.
love the content more of a football guy and a casual basketball fan so love Insite and value you try to explain about the game and players.
Really appreciate that, glad you enjoy it!
The last two DPOY winners now play for the Memphis Grizzlies 🐻
Marcus Smart | Jaren Jackson Jr.
Smart is the best addition, He takes some leadership qualities to a youthful team. Overall a great move for Memphis
😊😊
Low-key grit and grind basketball again in Memphis
I just think it’s funny that everyone calls Smart’s DPOY fraudulent but as soon as he leaves Boston he’s a ‘powerhouse’. Which is it lol
The award was definitely fraudulent but he was still an easy 1st team all defense selection that season and deservingly seen as an elite defender. Problem is that guards have only a fraction of the defensive responsibility as bigs
These the same ppl that pushed for Boston to blow it up and trade brown and Tatum just to turn around and call them a y loyal organization for trading smart lmao it’s all in the art of hating
@hb-robo Yeah, being the point of attack defender and constantly guarding the guy with the ball and blowing up like 5 screens a play is way less to do than standing in front of the rim and being big with your arms up.
@@bpdmf2798 objectively, it is. Smart is not nearly as effective with KAT and Vuc in the backcourt instead of Al and Tatum and Rob.
As one of the few remaining Bullets fans Porzingis was REALLY good for us and I think Boston fans are going to be very pleasantly surprised. So much of the Porzingis narrative got twisted around his inability to find common ground with Luka, but Luka is turning out to be awfully prima Donna-ish. I never saw anything that wasn’t team-first with the guy. He might not be the bulldog Marcus Smart is, and he’s DEFINITELY not the leader he is, but he’s way more talented. It could definitely work if either Tatum or Brown steps into that leadership void. And if they don’t it was never going to work anyway.
Let’s see if those two knuckleheads Brown and Tatum can work as a team all together!!!
He’s a great voice in the team, one of the most understand and sociable person I’ve seen in the NBA. He can be a great leader if he wants, he has the perfect temperament for it.
And it will mean more minutes for Derrick White, which is a plus. Horford wasnt that guy anymore. KP getting most of his minutes is also a plus.
They just need a captain and/or a facilitator.
What made Luka a prima donna. He wasnt involved in the offense much which was a mistake and he never found his rhytm there but what makes you think its because of Luka. Im a fan of both btw.
Great comment!
Yeah, with KP it all hinges to whether he can be healthy enough for deep post season games.
Smart going to Memphis could help Ja and co and guide them, but he won’t turn them into a boring team, which is good. When Memphis is rolling, they’re one of the most fun teams around.
Memphis won the trade if you wanna win in the playoffs. Celtics are gonna bounces second with no defense.

Brad hired a ballboy to be the head coach, the opposite of genius
This deal is bizarre. Like smarts fit in Memphis especially with Ja out to start the season but 2 first rounders seems like a lot plus loosing Jones who is criminally underrated. Wizards side is understandable, been dealt a bad hand. Brad stevens just out here robbing everyone. KP easily best player in this trade after a really great season and should perfectly fit alongside Tatum and brown, while also gaining draft capital is ridiculous.
They have a stretch 4 or 5 with KP. It's a good trade
great call and great video. Thanks for posting
Great insight! Can't wait for the season to start
Smart was much more of a problem and hindrance than people think. He also because of ego really limited when we could play white or brogdon and not mess with chemistry. Freeing that up will be beneficial as well .
I agree and I don’t understand how people didn’t see that. Hes a player that should come off the bench not a starter that calls out JB, JT or the head coach….
Exactly
First video of yours I’m watching. Great vid! You made a lot of great points.
Smart was overrated DOESNT mean he was bad he was just way to hyped up he was no star just a decent player this is a win for Boston
I like that you’ve been showing your face more. Love your work bro
What I like in this trade is that Derrick White gets to Close games now.
Good point
really wished the brogdon trade went through because id flourish more with marcus smart than brogdon imo
Great content man thank you. I'm coming more and more around to the idea of this trade but losing Smart will always hurt.
Al Horford just sighed the biggest sigh of relief in basketball history. That man can’t keep playing 20-30 minutes a night and he’s not good enough to be taking up that much floor time.
So if this will be the final trade that they do, their current line-up will be:
PG: White/Brogdon
SG: Brown
SF: Tatum
PF/C: Al, Rob, Kristaps, Kornet
Yeah they need to think about their backcourt rotation
Pritchard, Hauser
Brogdon went to Clippers right
@@absshire7984No.
There backcourt’s fine - White, Brogdon, and Prichard - is an excellent PG rotation, what we need to focus on is a wing to backup JT and JB, hopefully someone like Bruce brown in Free Agency
Grant Williams?
Really excellent analysis. I would like to hear your best case scenario of the new look Dubs and how Chris Paul will fit.
Good breakdown!
Memphis needs that leadership from Marcus smart though. Inside and outside the locker room. Good move for the grizzlies in my opinion.
I'm not even a huge fan of Boston but I can't imagine they've traded Marcus Smart, it looks like they are doing it again like they traded Rozier for Kemba Walker
Look at that beautiful man
You’re welcome 😂
As a Cs fan, I hope to God that this move is actually as good as most media talking heads have been saying. Most fans in Boston I've talked to are either torn or flat put mad about the trade.
Gave up our team identity and heart for a 1 year rental that will likely not make it to the playoffs. He is a fine player, but if we don't win a ring this year, then what?
Wiz fans will miss you tingus. 😢
Hurts to see Smart get traded, but hopefully JD Davidson gets some playing time now.
Very nice content!
Horford, RobWill, KP is such a versatile big rotation, I don't see how they can keep all three and grant though.
Grant is the odd man out
Horford will get less minutes since he is getting old.
@@neckius3002 I can see it. I moreso meant financially because with a Grant resigning I think that’ll be something like 92ish mil on bigs alone assuming grant gets like 40/3 or something
@@neckius3002 sorry never mind I thought Horford was still on that 30M per year deal. They’re fine!
This is some serious insight 🫵
I’m honestly not upset about losing smart. We needed to retool and I felt like smart should have been gone after last year
Back here months after we won the title. This and the holiday trade sealed the chip
They need to do more… and they haven’t.
We were supposed to RUN IT BACK.
The city of Boston is not happy about trading away Smart. He was our own homegrown heart of the team.
Probably a trade that needed to happen. We’ll all miss Smart but if Brown was not gonna go one of the guards definitely was. KP will be a great addition if he stays healthy. Hope they keep Brogdon now, otherwise need a replacement, D.White won’t be enough.
Bro Boston fans are happy about this trade!!
We now have a post player scorer
Shoutout El Bandido Tequila being a patron. Great tequila
I like the idea of scoring more with KP and relying less on Smart
Marcus is a great human being and a great player at times but I would focus on 3 major plus of this trade. First Marcus can make you go under by 15 points in 3 minutes just by starting a streak on debatable decision, sure he can also win you games in a great fashion and that will be missed, Second he is a leader, a warrior but it’s pretty clear we need other guys to grow as leader, as I said he is a great man but also a very heavy presence of other player emotional developers, Third this is the third time in 40 years we will have a real elite post scoring option that can also defend paired with a great defender (sometime that can also score). McHale-TheChief/Garnett-KP/Porz-AL (with Kite-PJ-RWill)all the couples are different and obviously the results are not given, also KG and Kevin were Superstars while KP is just a great player right now but nevertheless it’s just the third time we have a top tier front court in 40 years. If the team stays healthy, kids grow mentally and maybe picks a good real Playmaker we are up for a great run.
p.s. greetings from 10 year experienced bball coach from Europe✌️
Maybe KP coming to Boston is a good thing but losing Smart is the worst
cant wait to see marcus smarts new hair colors
My heart still hurts
I think it will allow Boston to play "Jokic ball" with a large creator at the high post. Also the Unicorn is a good rim runner.
im excited about watching this team with KP. Boston hasnt had a good scoring center in as long as i can remember. altho KP may be playing a PF position if he plays with williams on the floor..
Now they need to make the Dame for Jalen trade. This will give them an elite point, wing and big.
I’d say a W trade for Boston.
But losing Smarts leadership will take a hit to the team and Brown / Tatum aren’t vocal guys
Idk as a fan this one hurts, if they win a chip they best gives Marcus a ring when Boston hosts Memphis the next year. It should’ve been Malcolm
Gotta put your feelings to the side my boy. This trade obv made sense.
idk why everybody so pressed with brown he is still an elite shot creator he just has to tighten his handle and respond better to the increased attention in and around the paint he is getting
Knicks KP was CRAZY
the issue wasn't smart, it was the left hand dribbling.... I don't see this changing
Would you and the guys on the shoot around consider making a top 25 player list on the pod?
Smart is not something you can't find.
Who the fuck is Tingis Pingis?!?!?
Luka on the Best Post Scorers is Crazy
No loyalties just business 😂
New Robert Parrish! I like it.
‘It helps me out a ton’ 👀wonder where I heard that before?
we'll know after 2023-2024 season if Brad Stevens was able to inherit Danny Ainge's genius moves on tading players while maintining a competitive team to play deep in the playoffs
Thanks
I hated this so much for Smart bro you know he was heartbroken.
Swear I'll never forgive the clippers for not taking Brogdon, y'all might as well be the Lakers now it's fuck y'all for life lmfaooooo😩😭😭😭😭😭😭
They need a playmaker!
M Brogdon was 6th man of the year. Keeping him is not irrelevant.
Boston needs to stop playing iso ball thats their biggest problem
They haven't had a post player since Kevin McHale and Robert Parish that is their biggest problem and their coach is garbage.
We haven’t seen playoff porzingues on then it would make sense
We are upset at losing Smart but not angry. He is beloved but we had a good run and he had many chances at a chip
If healthy this team will set records offensively MMW
ty Jones the best backup pg in the league in my opinion
Boston going big like Denver.
the only way to win in The New League.
To think Boston will get worse from the D side is a good trade.
Watching last year we had almost no front court. Let’s be honest Al is older & Rob won’t shoot the ball. A shooting big was essential.
upset about losing smart? f no! we love it! bring on KP
this my first video, i like dis guy
trade is shit he is pron to injuries and he is inconsistent as fuck , but i hope everything works out
this season is time for coach Mazulla to shine on defense of the team
He have logo range, easy for him to score if he is allowed
I still dont see them winning the chip next season 🤷
What do they need then you idiot. They just added one of the Best Superstars in the NBA.
how about defence ?
Lol chemistry is built on the court not on paper
They need Mac McClung for true floor General that can score as well , because KP ain't going to get it done .. plus he want be worth anything in trade talk in a year or two .. ridiculous
I don't think this puts the celtics over the top. They need a point guard who makes great decisions first and foremost plus some 3-D wing who is not score first like Jaylen Brown
