Pokémon shaped my childhood. Born in ‘90, it was perfect. It was a time before tech really took off. We still used our imaginations. Physical things were still so important. The show, the games, the cards encapsulated me for those few years it took the world by storm. It was an amazing time. It was everywhere. All of my friends were into it too. Nothing will ever be like that again. I found my old card collection back in 2021 and I’ve been collecting more vintage ever since. Pokémon is life ❤
My brother and I were there when it all started, too. At no time since has it been the phenomenon that it was when it first came out. Whereas today it has become so ubiquitous, back then it was truly something special that really brought all of us together. I'm glad you opened up with a brief history of the handheld market. My brother and I both agree that if Pokemon never released, the handheld market would be *VERY* different. We'd most likely never have had the Nintendo Switch or the Steam Deck.
Great video so far. Really enjoying it. Will check out more of yours. 20:44 I believe you should have completed the thought and said Charmander is strong against Bulbasaur
Also, I really appreciate you using the Green sprites. There's something about some of them that feels truly unique. My favorite Green sprite is probably Ponyta. That one just feels both ethereal and gnarly in a way that could only be expressed in the 90's.
I think the games limitations/subpar graphics choices got balanced out by having the anime and manga release and be promoted as much as the game. At least here in the west, it was so easy to fill in rhe gaps with our imaginations.
I'll always look back at those televangelist shows and laugh at how idiotic and downright ignorant they were. Good thing that my parents didn't gave a shit about it back in the day since they knew it was just a kids show.
@taylorswan8587 I swear they pulled whatever thing that came from their asses and make that as a fact because "thing i don't like = Evil" no wonder pretty much nobody cared about what they said about it back then and rightfully so.
I started with pkmn red and a game boy pocket in late 90’s, now playing scarlet on a switch with more than 4000 creatures stored on Home, beside all its recent flaws I still love the franchise
You should always play with the original pea soup colors of the original gameboy because that’s how the original developers originally intended it to look
The missing no glitch also allows you to obtain an item that allows you to execute arbitrary code. Its the method I used to get pokebank compatible mews into ultra sun
Sometimes I wonder if I didn’t dedicate all the free space in my brain to pokemon, who I would be as a person and what I’d be doing with my free time and money lol
The Mew glitch originally has two ways the long way or the easy long way. The easy long way you need to catch a Abra. Or the long way you need to get HM 02 Fly. Either way you get a legit Mew from a glitch
Just totaled my car while listening to this and the cop asked me “is that Pokémon ” when I showed him the dash camera video. 😂😂😂 Technically I didn’t total my car, a cop car totaled it in the middle of a car chase.
Red, Blue, and Green were all compatible with the Super Game Boy's enhanced color palette (which Yellow Version could do natively on a Game Boy Color). I just overlayed the footage with a Game Boy Color in editing. If you have a copy of Pokémon Stadium on N64, you can also use that to play the Gen 1 games in color like this.
My parents knew those Charlatans were full of shit and just fear mongering, they didn’t hesitate to get me and my siblings each a different version of pokemon, I had red, my sister had yellow and my brother had blue, ah good times, though my mom did think it was a fad and didn’t get us cards until kids made fun of the printed out cardstock ones she made us XD, my first card was a ripped up weedle I found on the scool bus and taped it up
Yeah, thankfully my parents didn't fall for any of the Satanic Panic crap either. My dad, however, did get pretty sick of me talking about nothing but Pokémon non-stop from ages 8 to 11, lol.
Can you still be a “filthy casual” and utilize EVs/IVs??? Because I don’t play competitive… I just enjoy breeding the ‘mons and hatching eggs… and I enjoy raising the babies. 😂 And I figure I might as well do the EV/IV thing while I’m at it…??? 😂
What's really sad about the Virtual Boy is Gunpei Yokoi wanted it to be much much better than it was but Nintendo wouldn't fund the vision. So this lame product dropped and destroyed his career. A legacy ruined because Nintendo wouldn't support their product. 😞
@@GamingintheAM0801I wish they would port those games to a collection. I was really shocked that the Wonderswan Klonoa games were not in the PS5 Collection 👀
This video's thumbnail contains 24 different Pokémon (25 in total, if you count Pikachu being there twice). Can you find and name all 24?

As a 92 kid, I recall everything and it was magical

20:44 I believe you should have completed the thought and said Charmander is strong against Bulbasaur
"And then we loop back around to Bulbasaur" is what I said there, I felt that got the point across.
Also, I really appreciate you using the Green sprites. There's something about some of them that feels truly unique. My favorite Green sprite is probably Ponyta. That one just feels both ethereal and gnarly in a way that could only be expressed in the 90's.
I just looked up the sprite on Bulbapedia and I absolutely agree. It's awesome!
I think the games limitations/subpar graphics choices got balanced out by having the anime and manga release and be promoted as much as the game. At least here in the west, it was so easy to fill in rhe gaps with our imaginations.
I agree. It was actually the anime and manga that got me into the games back then!
Being born '91 Pokémon hit literally right on time for me 😅 and to think, the ideas for it were concieved even before I was born
I'll always look back at those televangelist shows and laugh at how idiotic and downright ignorant they were. Good thing that my parents didn't gave a shit about it back in the day since they knew it was just a kids show.
I go back and watch that one satanic panic speech about pokemon like once a year, and I still don’t know what a Satanic Z is 😂😂
@taylorswan8587 I swear they pulled whatever thing that came from their asses and make that as a fact because "thing i don't like = Evil" no wonder pretty much nobody cared about what they said about it back then and rightfully so.
I wish I still had that VHS promotion! The weird professor guy spouting random words to make the Pokedex sound like a tech marvel is pure nostalgia.
I'll have you know, when I was a kid, I used my Master Ball on an Onix in Yellow.

I cringed at the save after the master ball on the seaking...
I still use the Missingno or M glitch to this day. Never gets old plus a big help for gen 2
That thumbnail slaps. Gorgeous. Sought out to ken sugimori
By far the most time-consuming thumbnail I've made, lol
The missing no glitch also allows you to obtain an item that allows you to execute arbitrary code. Its the method I used to get pokebank compatible mews into ultra sun
The violence argument can no longer be used in this country
Sometimes I wonder if I didn’t dedicate all the free space in my brain to pokemon, who I would be as a person and what I’d be doing with my free time and money lol
You'd be a lot worse off...!

Just started watching and oh my gosh, did you get Veronica to do the opening?! That sounded just like her when she voiced Ash!
The opening was taken from a promotional VHS from the 90s, so yes that's Veronica!
Pokemon changed my life
16:16 a seaking?? Well, the true question is, would a magikarp be better or worse?
Btw nice Takato pfp. Tamers ftw.
Great video. I felt like I was 9 in 1998 again.
Just totaled my car while listening to this and the cop asked me “is that Pokémon ” when I showed him the dash camera video. 😂😂😂
Technically I didn’t total my car, a cop car totaled it in the middle of a car chase.
This is by far the coolest thing to happen during one of my videos.
(Glad you're okay!)
@ thanks!
How were you playing Blue and Red but with color? I was so confused seeing those sprites but in color I kept thinking it was Yellow version

He then went on to design the Bandai WonderSwan, which is unironically one of my favorite handhelds.

Pokemon was not an "indie game"
