    Thank you for taking this seriously. I keep looking at reviews to pick out a planner and time and time again they don’t do a pen test! It’s enraging! Am I psychicly writing in the planner?

      You are so welcome! I don't always include a pen test thinking the paper is always the same, but clearly now I need to start doing on every time when it comes to TRP.

    What their response tells me is that Hobonichi doesn't think of themselves as a fountain pen friendly brand. The user base does, but they don't think that of themselves.

      This is a good point and a logical one...especially since they give a free pen with their orders that works fine with the paper regardless of the manufacturer

      Yes that's a great point and it's a total bummer because I am one of those that wants it to remain fountain pen friendly and they seem not to care about that lol

      @@SamisSweetLife you and me both. I've been using fountain pens exclusively since around 2011. It's to the point that I may have to go back to rings because all of the bound books that are to be fountain pen friendly are using Sanzen. Meanwhile I still have an unused pack of A4 of the OG TRP from pre-2018 along with about 8 or 9 unopened A4 packs of Cosmo Air Snow.

      @taccora it's so funny because I really got into TRP planning the last couple years when a lot of companies had already switched to Sanzen so I didn't know any difference. I was too new to the fountain pen world to care yet. So far my planners have worked fine but the inconsistencies definitely give me pause.

    Tomoe River Paper has coating. My first guess would be something going wrong with the coating process during manufacture, which could explain inconsistencies.

    • @AuntieAlexandra
      @AuntieAlexandra День назад +2

      I think you’re right about the coating, because the ink dries much faster than the older paper.

      @@SamisSweetLife I wish I could find someone who actually knows about paper manufacturing who also is into Hobonichi, because the more I think about it, the more I find this is likely the best explanation. Even my well-behaved 2025 Hobo’s all feel different to the touch. I can’t help thinking that it much be a cheaper way of making paper. It can’t possibly be easy or inexpensive to make good quality reliable paper, and corner cutting at the new manufacturer would be exactly how everything in modern life seems to go.

      @AuntieAlexandra yes I agree! We need some paper scientists to chime in.

    Thank you for this and for reading the response. I understand things happening, but I was waiting to see how companies respond to this issue. The main reason I pay higher prices for a planner or notebook is tomoe river paper to use my fountain pen. My 5 year has bleed through with a twsbi medium nib with sailor ink 273. Don't listen to the negative comments.

    • @SamisSweetLife
      @SamisSweetLife  День назад +1

      Yes exactly how I feel. So they are basically saying this is what to expect with the batches being different. So why should I continue to buy somethhing that may or may not work with all my fun pens? If I wanted to use a ballpoint pen, I would get a planner that I liked the insides a bit more lol. I buy Hobonichi and other TRP planners specifically for the TRP because it works so beautifully with all my fun pens. I reviewed a bunch of TRP planners and there doesn't seem to be this much issue with any others that I am aware of.

  • @AuntieAlexandra

    Sorry, I’m realizing my comment is 10 million words long. TLDR version: Hobonichi is basically telling us, that they never promised that their paper could do all the things it could do before, so the fact that it can’t take heavy/thick fountain pen writing anymore is not a “defect” because they never said that either their old or new paper could withstand that. Given the expectations of so many of their customers, they should have been more open in saying that they acknowledge this and maybe admit that the new paper just isn’t the same, and that hopefully they will look into making the paper a little thicker or other change to help overcome the different quality paper. I always think companies make a huge mistake in not going 110% with customer service. The old adage of “the customer’s always right” really is good business.

    Maybe it’s easy for me to say, since my 2025 Hobonichi’s have been all fine, but I think Hobonichi is basically saying that while it’s true that their previous paper used to be able to withstand all kinds of inks in even very heavy handed writing (paper which unfortunately is no longer being manufactured and that’s completely not fault), it was never their promise that their paper could do that, just a happy accident that unfortunately no longer occurs.
    I have noticed in looking at lots of people’s videos and photos showing the bleed through, that’s it’s always in people using thick heavy lines and having a heavy hand when writing. Which is what one needs to do for pretty lettering and fancy calligraphy. As far as I can tell, anyone writing “normally” with a fountain pen (by which I mean non-decoratively) doesn’t seem to have that issue. Hobonichi appears to be saying that they recognize that their paper can’t do that anymore, but they never claimed that it would, so it’s not defective paper. Just paper that no longer can do the fantastic things it could do before.
    I’ve tried watercolors in my 2025 Hobonichi’s and even that hasn’t bled through, and no matter what I write with, it seems to dry much faster than the old paper, so I’m happy.

      Yes I think you are right on the assessment. It's just sad for the fountain pen lovers, especially if it's the case where they are trying to take their time and write beautifully in their planners and now they can no longer do that. I personally use medium nibs, and that's all I own actually. I love a nice bold line.
      Just kind of sad that rather than embracing it and saying something like 'wow, we had no idea y'all loved our paper for the fountain pen friendly nature so much! We are going to work closely with Sanzen to try to make improvements"... They are just like "well WE never claim to be fountain pen friendly so it's all good folks!" and wash their hands of the whole issue. That just leaves a lot of fountain pen lovers not feeling heard.

    I don’t understand how you can say they’re gaslighting when they said they would address it on an individual basis if someone felt yours was unfit or did you just skip over that part if you feel like it’s unfit send them an inquiry on the inquiry form and Hobonichi is incredibly good about replacing products. But my whole thought process in this is that TRP has always been fountain pen friendly it’s one of the things that draws people to TRP but that was under Tomoegawa which doesn’t exist any longer so we’re stuck with Sanzen, we should be thankful someone stepped up to make TRP with some changes instead of it disappearing completely. The paper is still incredible but when it comes to Hobonichi, there is a reason they give you a pen and if you don’t want to use that pen, then you’re stuck with bleed through or severe ghosting that’s all there is to it because I have yet to see any test where the Uni jetstream bleeds through, or has that much ghosting. I for one have not had a single issue with Sanzen and I write on TRP daily with a medium fountain pen to a 1.1 stub with zero bleed through, and my new weeks I use an extra fine for space constraints and still no issue. They have addressed concerns and have said it still meets their standards which says to me that fountain pens were never their standard hence the free Uni jetstream someone somewhere will always have a problem with a product and that’s all this is this is people voicing their problems with a product that is changed because the original paper is no longer available and they want to bitch and complain in fact, I would be surprised if anybody making the claims is outside the United States because we are a self entitled bunch.

      @@Pym1975 Japanese people also use fountain pens in their hobonichis. The reality is, if their paper doesn’t handle fountain pens anymore, they are going to loose A LOT of business in coming years. It’s important for them to be aware of that.

      @@vanessasmith9646 I’ve seen the pics I understand but I believe people are making a bigger issue out of it than needs to be its like the whole reactionary crap of launch night when I could not get it to process I decided I would just wait this year knowing that they instituted new procedures and a new server, on the 15th when I got back around to ordering everything was in stock and I mean everything I was still undecided on everything I wanted and still may place a second order for more items I really want a stappo and I want to get my sister a cousin and cover so I do not discount that there are people unhappy what I do discount is the hyper reactions that seem to be playing out on social media platforms

      And people need to understand that it really isn’t a Hobonichi issue as much as it is a Sanzen problem I think the best way for them to handle it would be to increase the gsm next year which will make minimum difference in the thickness but could very well alleviate the bleed through issue of some of the paper batches
