This was a mainstay of my primary education. Interesting that the #2 pencil terminology has become archaic. (Just checked a Ticonderoga pencil at the library where I am right now, and there's the number 2 near the eraser.)
Kate Smith - Referenced in "It's not over 'til the fat lady sings." The story (possibly apocryphal) is that she sang "God Bless America" after the end of a certain game in Madison Square Garden, if I recall correctly.
@@kathleenquinn9015 Often seen in Bugs Bunny cartoons from the 40's and 50's (maybe earlier). Kate Smith was famous for singing "God Bless America" before sporting events especially Philadelphia Flyers (NHL hockey) games in the 70's, she was considered their good luck charm, they were undefeated when she sang.
A sacrifice fly is a baseball play where the hitter intentionally hits a long fly ball. Once it is caught deep in the outfield, a runner on third can tag the base and then run home before the ball thrown by the outfielder reaches home plate. The hitter has sacrificed his chance to get on base in exchange for the team scoring a run.
I was familiar with the baseball play, but the 3-letter abbreviation made me think of a physiological sac and a flying insect attracted to it. [not a thing]

#2. Lead hardness. Other hardness factors often used in hand-drawn drafting (very old-school)

Thanks for the explanations! I always find them helpful even if they are repeated.

I think the phrase was used, prior to Kate Smith’s rise to stardom, to refer to the final notes of an opera, typically sung by a larger female singer.
@@kathleenquinn9015 Never heard that one. Makes sense.
6D - UMPS - Home plate umpires who squat down when calling balls and strikes

Ad Astra was also a movie a few years ago, with moderate success.

This puzzle defeated me! I just couldn't connect well with the clues, and gave up (rather than google the majority of it)!
I gave in after looking at all clues and getting less than 10 answers.
Very hard today. I feel like this has been a tough week all in all.
This one was DIFFICULT for me!
Good content
You got Indus before I did, hahaha
Indus, the #2 river in India. I couldn't think of it, despite the mnemonic of the name of the country! Embarrassment #2.
No wonder I was stuck with median , here we have central reservations ( which sound more American ! )
