Hi, why is the definite article used in "Elle a les yeux verts" yet the indefinite article is used in "Elle a de longs bras".
It seems here that the placement of the adjective before or after the noun determines whether the indefinite or definite article is used respectively which makes no sense grammatically in any language. Can you explain this.
Thanks.
Bonjour Mark, excellente question. The use of "de" vs. "des" - like in your second example - will depend on the placement of the adjective indeed. So, if you're using plural, which means the partitive article used should be "des," but if an attributive adjective is placed before the noun (in written French or in formal spoken French), it is replaced by "de." For example, you will say "elle a DE beaux cheveux" and not "elle a DES beaux cheveux". I think this would be more of an "aesthetic" rule.
BUT, you can also use the definite article even if the adjective is placed before the noun (Elle a les longs cheveux de sa mère, ils ont les beaux yeux de leur père). This will actually lead you to check which adjectives can be placed before and after the noun (which are actually the B.A.G.S. adjectives - Beauty, Age, Goodness, Size adjectives). The use of the definite article (le, la, les, l') will depend on the context this time.

Hi thanks for your reply.
Yeah I know about when we use "de" instead of "des" when the adjective comes before the noun, thanks.
But this isn't what I'm asking. Why did you think I was asking that 🙂.
No what I'm asking is simply why the partitive (and not the definite article) is used in a phrase like "il a de longs bras". You say the definite can be used for phrases like "elle a les longs cheveux" but I understand you cannot say "il a les longs bras"for "he has long arms" or at least a French person would think it sounded odd
Or are you saying "il a les longs bras" actually means "he has long arms" also.
Thanks.
