Such a different approach to ODIs back then.. teams would sleepwalk through the first 20 or so overs and really look to pile on runs in the final 10-15 overs..
@@gurujojo8992 first 15 over power plays were enforced in Australia, still didn't change the approach much till Jayasuriya changed it around 1996 world cup. Because opening batsmen of that generation, had been trained to play risk free cricket in the early overs, since childhood.
Awesome upload!!! I was at this match, I had recently turned 9, and it was my first time at a match live!! I still remember the awesome pull shot 6 Mark Taylor hit. Also how awesome were those kits!! By far the best one day shirts we've ever had.
Costa Sports Yup! This was truly the golden age of one day cricket. Back then you'd get 50,000-75,000 for one dayers at the MCG. These days you'd be lucky to crack 20,000 if India aren't involved. Also modern "kits" are so lame and boring. The B&H WSC was by far the best ODI competition the world of cricket has ever seen.
Like a lot of cricket lovers I didn't know much about Sri Lankan cricket during the 80's. I have read their seam bowlers had decent pace. While they weren't world beaters the opening bowlers look like good fast medium bowlers. During the 80's the likes of Boon would have been considered a good one day player yet by modern standards the only batsman in the Australian batting line up would make it the current one day game is Dean Jones who was a brilliant one day player.
Never ever compare people and players of different eras. There was no power play, no fre hit, no rule about bouncer, no third umpire and difficult pitches. Moreover, MCG had the longest boundary. Every generation faces different chalenges, depending on age and avalable resources. Apart from these facts, one day game had been evolving as an exciting form. You would not witness ennings with strike rate above hundred on regular bases.
Those were the days when teams used to defend scores around 220 with just above average bowling and good fielding in Australia. The pitches used to be good for bowlers too till the very end. Batters had to earn their runs. Even a total of 220 made things interesting.

Can't Forget Tony Greigh Both Captain Arjuna Ranathunga n Mark Taylor Class Players 👏👌
16.34 Ranathunga played the same shot to win the 96 wc for SriLanka against Australia
Still one of my all-time favorite cricket games 96 WC
Bill Lawry and Tony Greig in fine form.
yes
Two of the greatest cricket callers of all time
16:34 The same winning run shot he played against Australia in 1996 WC Final

This the real cricket which effected by T20 very badly.
RIP my favorite Dean Jones.....Respect from India..

Beautiful approach, made cricket exciting. I loved this cricket. Cricket hasn't been the same since 1996 world cup.

Great cricket I love both captains
This is 1989-90 season. Sri Lanka really came of age sometimes around 1992-93 season. They ceased to be minnows after that. No pushovers anymore.
ranatunga taking so many important wickets
Thanks for the upload. Very happy to watch.
@3:00 see this kiddo, leaves game as a legend, and changed cricket for ever
One of the last times there was no test match on Boxing Day at the MCG.
Did anyone know a player called jsuriya?
Yes it was his debut. Rest is history.
Yes
No one did think that he is going to change the world cricket
@@priyankaramahagammullage2892with spring bats, he still didn't
T-7 years till WC win. Sri Lankas rise was wild. All great sons of the soil who came out for the country when we needed some hope.
The player kits were so nice and simple back then.
A brilliant catch taken by Ravi Ratnayake off his own bowling to see the back of Mark Taylor.
good bowler that ravi ratnayaka.
Is anyone else getting turned on by the sight of these Sri Lankans in their dark blue uniforms??
The debut game of some Sri Lankan player called Sanath Jayasuriya too. wonder what became of him.
Was Mark Taylor's debut too. And Sanath's ODI career would last 14 years longer than Tubby's. And be pretty much more dynamic too.
@Insert Name Here Lol he became Saitama before Saitama
He had 48 man of the match awards ( second most ) and 1996 World Cup Player of the Tournament
Great limited overs player ..not as good a test player but still made a triple hundred. Probably didn't live up to his full potential as a test player
@@TheSkirvo wft r u talkin bout. He averaged 40 as an opener in tests.

Fantastic! Great kits. Bit baseball-y.. but streets ahead of what todays graphic cluster****.
Costa Sports Yeah lover these. they were simpler back then. Also Sri Lanka inverted their colours and have stayed with this colour scheme

Waugh , boon, Jones, border, O'Donnell, wouldn't have to many problems in the modern era. Better bowlers and pitches then now in my opinion.
Dean Jones was a decade ahead of the rest
Unusual seeing AB wearing short sleeves.
5th over 12 runs inc.6 those days were never comes back
3:30....Ranatunga Steaming in...lol...
Classic uniforms in this era
Costa Sports, upload Roshan Mahanama's 119 odi innings vs Zimbabwe from 1994 & please let me know.
Super Catch by merv
Those days anything above 200 is a competative total.
It still is in a T20 match.

How good were playing kits in those days?
They've just bought retro ones out. Only thing it has a Alinta Gas logo on the front 😡
Think I was there for the evening session
Very rare to see Allan Border in short sleeves.
Classic ODI uniforms these
Back when Arjuna Ranatunga used to bowl..
Aravinda bat PUMA lovely 😁😁😁😁
Mitsubishi Lancer ad on the boundary line 😀😀 @26:52 mark a brand that withstood testing times?
Wow love these vids!!
Cheers! More to come.
ODI on Boxing Day?
Is this in 1989..😮🤔🤔
What's so funny about it being 1989?
Please apload Sri Lanka vs Australia test series 1995 in Australia.
The dresses were so nice, simple and jazzy in those days, now the so called cricket players look like walking ads !!!!!
Couldn't agree more.
Grrayemmy Labroy bowled a tidy spell.
13:34 helicopter shot. Is that dhoni? 🤧💩😂
The good old Australian wickets n coloured clothing
uncanny the number of batsmen who get caught (or dropped) at short mid wicket
Was this the last time they didn't line the camera up properly with the pitch?
David boone vry rare small man frm australian side
Strange how they hadn't managed to line up the cameras properly.
Jayasuriya so young
Joe sureya best batsman in the world those days
Who ?
Wait why was there an ODI on boxing day in Australia?
Jayasooriya😊
What happened to the traditional boxing day test match ? Were there no big teams available to tour Aus in the summer of 1989 ?
I thought boxing day, always had a test match.
Only since 1997.
O
It was slow batting back in those days 106 after 30 overs Aussies were
Ironic that the man who'd thtow that playbook out the window debuted in this match
