This was released in 1983. And for half a decade or more afterwards here in the UK, EVERY club in the country ended the night with this as the last slow song before the lights went up.
You just reminded of when most clubs played The Last Dance by Donna Summer back around that same era. But it lasted for a lot longer than 5 years. It's a good song, but it was so cheesy after a while. It was great when techno and grunge moved in and kicked a lot of cheese music to the curb. We need another one of those right about now..
I'm English born and bred and this song was something my parents blasted out regularly. Even at 33 years old now myself if this song comes on I have no self control against singing it aloud and playing the imaginary saxophone 🤣

This song is an actual classic goat song, it was sampled by PM Dawn back in the 90`s and it actually does the original justice. And also the R and B singer Lloyd had a song with Lil wayne back in the mid 2000`s that I can remember sampled this song. I liked all the versions which says a lot about the original.
One of the greatest love songs of 1983 this song was all over the radio back then fun fact the rap group PM Dawn flipped it for their 1991 song " Set Adrift On Memory Bliss"
Sampled more than 20 times, I think Brad is referring to Nelly's N Dey Say from around 2009 or Lloyd's You around the same era. Both R&B Hip Hop type songs
Trivia Time: The song "True" by the British band Spandau Ballet has been used in films and television shows (and by a lot of people at a lot of weddings) as a romantic love ballad. This is in spite of the fact that its not a love song at all. Or at least, not a traditional one. The song was actually written, in part, as a tribute to Marvin Gaye, who had been recently murdered when Gary Kemp began to write the song. According to Kemp, he wanted to write a song that Marvin Gaye could have written. He describes it as "a song about writing a love song." The band never expected "True" to be a hit, and none of the band members think it was the band's best song ever, as it didn't really fit into the band's typical sound, but the inspiration was there, and they produced it anyway. As of my writing this, "True" is the second-most played song on the radio world-wide, behind "Yesterday" by the Beatles. In the US alone, it has been played on the radio over 5 million times. Given that "True" is 5:17 long, this is the equivalent of playing it continuously for over 50 years.
The album "True" was released in early March of 1983, thirteen months BEFORE Marvin Gaye was murdered in early April of 1984, fifty weeks after the single "True" was released. The 40th anniversary approaches.
P.M. Dawn sampled this in Set Adrift on Memory Bliss. True was released in 1983. Last song on the album True. This song appeared in the movie Sixteen Candles starring Molly Ringwald. Released in 1986. 1982 through 1983. The Police were in The Bahamas. Sting + Stewart Copeland were constantly arguing + laying temper tantrums. The infighting was so bad that Andy Summers left the house to look for help. Luckily, the late George Martin, producer of The Beatles, was nearby. Andy talked to George. His advice was relayed to Andy. Then, Andy returned. Sting + Stew stopped their bickering for the meantime. Meanwhile, Spandau Ballet was working on their album True on another side of the island! SB was on the rise! 1 year later, Sting met Spandau Ballet at the Band Aid recording session, London, UK. 🇬🇧 Yet, The Police was slowly breaking up. Spandau Ballet broke up in the 1990s. They returned in the early 2000s. Then, they broke up in 2010s. True. Written by Gary Kemp. Keyboardist and guitarist. Gary looks and sounds like South African singer/songwriter Dave Matthews. I love this song! It’s a classic from Spandau Ballet, an British eighties New Wave/ New Romantic group! This song has been sampled a lot. PM Dawn sampled it for their nineties hit, Set Adrift on Memory Bliss! ❤️❤️
I’m amazed that there are ppl that haven’t heard this song yet! It’s iconic and timeless! It also never gets old, I’ve been listening to it since the 80s ❤
This remains so iconic of the '80s - probably heard it in the background of so much multimedia ever since, I'll just accept it as part of the soundtrack of my life.
Spandau Ballet were part of this underground club culture genre called "New Romantics", which was a mixture of new wave, glam rock, a little dash of punk, but then topped it all off with a lot of flamboyant fashion and style. A lot of acts who have a very particular unique sound came from the early new romantic scene, Duran Duran, Culture Club, Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, ABC, Eurythmics, Soft Cell, Bow Wow Wow, and a lot more. It was fun stuff.
This is a new wave/new romantic classic. Often played at weddings, proms, school dances, etc during the '80s and '90s, even now to this day. Huge hit on the radio and MTV. Spandau Ballet were part of the New Romantics (offshoot of new wave), which was a softer, soulful, more romantic side of new wave/post-punk. Bands like them in that sub genre were Duran Duran, Howard Jones, Boy George Culture Club, ABC, Roxy Music, Human League, Joe Jackson, Tears for Fear, Soft Cell etc. Peaked in the '80s, waned off a little during the early '90s. This song has been sampled often over the years by many hip hop artists, PM Dawn (and '80s/'90s arty alternative hip hop group) had the most well know "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" which was also played often at dances, proms, weddings, etc. A huge hit on radio and MTV. New wave has been sampled a lot over the years. Spandau Ballet also had good videos for "To Cut a Long Story Short", "Gold", etc which were more upbeat. They were an '80s group. Lex really loves those saxophone solos. lol. Very typical in the late '70s, '80s and early '90s.
In case people aren't aware, Roxy Music is touring in the autumn, across North America and finishing at the O2 in London on 14 October. I have my ticket for London! So looking forward to 'Avalon'. They've got to do 'Avalon', right?
What are the odds that you reacted to this song on the same day the Professor Of Rock showcased this song? This is a special treat! This song makes me feel so nostalgic. I'm back in 6th grade when I hear this amazing tune!
So many to choose from, favs are- early years 'To Cut A Long Story Short' and 'Chant No 1', a few years on 'Gold', 'Instinction', 'Only When You Leave'
The song "True" has been sampled in many songs including Queen Pen's 1998 hit "It's True" and Nelly's "'N' Dey Say" in 2004. It was a No.1 US Billboard Hot 100 hit for PM Dawn in 1991 as "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" and a Top 10 single as "You" on the US Billboard Hot 100 for R&B artist Lloyd featuring Lil Wayne in 2006. It has also been covered by The Black Eyed Peas, Rui da Silva and Paul Anka and other artists.
*One of the foundational songs of the Second British Invasion of the early-mid 1980s, with British acts having unprecedented success in the US charts in the 80s (even more success than the first wave in the 60s.)*
They even used this song at the Academy Awards honoring 80's director JOHN HUGHES ..it fits perfectly with that era. You can't think of the 1980's without this song.
Ahhh. 1983. Stationed in Nurnberg Germany. Michael Jackson, The Scorpions and Spandau Ballet. German chicks loved it and I played the game. And to this day i still love this stuff. No good music anymore
Spandau Ballet was a part of "the New Romantics" of the early-mid 1980s.If you want to explore more of that sound, I'd recommend you do a reaction video (or three) diving into late Roxy Music and/or 80s Bryan Ferry. Songs like "More than This," "Avalon " or really anything off of their "Manifesto," "Flesh and Blood," and "Avalon" albums. "Avalon" in particular is one of rock music's rare perfect albums (not a superfluous note, immaculate musicianship, brilliant engineering). After "Avalon," Roxy Music perfected their potential and broke up. Bryan Ferry's "Boys and Girls" album after "Avalon" was essentially a sequel to "Avalon" (again a near perfect album). Cheers!
Ahh the 80’s “new romantic” era of music. Led to the hair metal era. Both were great! I’m lucky, I got to live it as a teenager. It was a great time in music to be alive. Another song from this band that is worth your time is called “Gold”.
This song was played at our school dances late '80 and '90s. Its the slower, romantic, soulful side of new wave music. 🎶 PM Dawn sampled this in the early '90s (also played at school dances), I forgot you are younger than most of us here. Lol. Figured you'd heard it before, still played often on classic hip hop and R&B stations. Also, PM Dawn song was a big hit and their other songs. Other rappers sampled it later on, too. Which you are more familiar with.
1983 was a good year for music. A few others from that time: “Long Hot Summer” by The Style Council, “Saved by Zero” by The Fixx, and “King of Pain” by The Police.
Sampled beautifully by the hip-hop duo PM Dawn for their "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" from 1991, which was the first rap track by a black artist to reach #1 on the pop chart.
@@HRodz-eipx Yes, there's a brief clip of him from this video at the end. Nice of them to acknowledge where they got the sample from. It paid off for all concerned.
"I wonder how many people had their first kiss to this song?" Great comment by Lex, and I can't answer that, but I CAN say that it got played at a LOT of weddings, including my cousin's. I probably knew 3 different couples who said this was "their song", and I don't exactly have a wide circle of friends. lol
I really enjoy watching you two react. Lex is an amazing energy. Brad really does take in the song. As a musician that is appreciated. He looks into the song not just the surface. Keep it up guys..

This was a monster hit in the UK. Part of the 'new romantic' group of English groups. I think you would like Roxy Music 'Avalon'.
I'm surprised they haven't done any Roxy Music yet, but they'll get there. Avalon is such a beautiful album, very moody and beautiful
Damn fine song
In case people aren't aware, Roxy Music is touring in the autumn, across North America and finishing at the O2 in London on 14 October. I have my ticket for London! So looking forward to 'Avalon'.
They've got to do 'Avalon', right?
This was HUGE in the US as well.
It reached #4 in America also. Was huge & has been in many Hollywood film soundtracks. Its just an 80s classic thats also been sampled a lot.
A guilty pleasure and Tony Hadley has one hell of a voice
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Gold"and "Only When You Leave"!!
_Gold_ is a good choice.
Gold top!
What are the odds that you reacted to this song on the same day the Professor Of Rock showcased this song? This is a special treat! This song makes me feel so nostalgic. I'm back in 6th grade when I hear this amazing tune!
Pretty much a staple at every prom, dance, etc. for decades.
PM Dawn is one they need to do. Set adrift on a memory bliss is the one I thought of, but thanks for the others.
I saw them live in the 80's and Tony's voice is identical live, unbelievably good. Try "Through the Barricades" by them next!
Lex nailed it as usual: must've been millions of first kisses shared to this song alone!
It’s an 80s hit. I was in high school. God we had the best music
Agreed
Yeah we did!
I graduated High School in 1982. Yes we did have the best Music.
'84
FACTS!!
Man this really brings back memories this is 80s British slow jam music big hit back then still beautiful
This song so iconic to the 80's it brought a tear to my eyes. 😥😢😢😓
How good it was to turn on the car radio in the 80's and listen to one hit after another.
Ahhh. 1983. Stationed in Nurnberg Germany. Michael Jackson, The Scorpions and Spandau Ballet. German chicks loved it and I played the game. And to this day i still love this stuff. No good music anymore
Ahhhhh.......! Every prom from the 80s. Good times.
For all us older folks, do you remember PM Dawns "Set Adrift On Memory BLiss" sample of this?
Older folks? Yow.
@@seantimmons5900 youngins* 🤣
It's arranged so beautifully.
I’m just so happy they started watching the actual music videos recently
I think that the best songs from the 80's came out in 83-84-85. Just amazing 3 years.
Released: 4 March 1983
Cheers!
100% agree. This is a great idea. More songs in this vein, please.
Great freaking song it was used in Adam Sandlers Wedding Singer
Iconic! Grew up listening to them on the radio.
Another 80s classic; real nostalgic feeling on this one.
This is such a great song. The 80s had some good music. So smooth.
"Tony Hadley we love madly" was the cry !
Love this song! In my mind it's always linked with a hit song from another band: "More Than This" by Roxy Music.
Ahh the 80’s “new romantic” era of music. Led to the hair metal era. Both were great! I’m lucky, I got to live it as a teenager. It was a great time in music to be alive. Another song from this band that is worth your time is called “Gold”.
This song was a pantie peeler back in the 80’s… Always a true New Waver! Forever.
King of pain one of my favorite songs ever, along with boys of summer don henley
The whole Police Synchronicity album was fire. Speaking of fire how about Def Leppard's Pyromania album that year too 🔥 🔥 🔥
"Long Hot Summer" Style Council 👍
You're the Best Thing - Style Council
This was THE slow dance song for school dances in the 80s.
Spandau Ballet, one of the greatest bands of all time ! Excellent choice guys 👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
So 80’s! I’ve always loved this song.
Sampled beautifully by the hip-hop duo PM Dawn for their "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" from 1991, which was the first rap track by a black artist to reach #1 on the pop chart.
The singer from Spandau Ballet is in the video too!
This song oozes prom slow dance. It's been covered a ton, used in movies, and sampled in a couple songs; I'm pretty sure PM Dawn used it.
You're right! PM Dawn's "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" in 1991. A worthy track to feature this riff.
This was one of those songs that inspired a lot of wedding dances.😂
Welcome to the eighties, anything, anywhere, anytime, and universally enjoyed!
This is the sound of my soul - he is actually singing from his soul
Ah - This was me and my first girlfriend's song. Two of the only people in a small Wyoming town who appreciated it when it first came out. 👍
This song should be played at EVERY prom
New Romantic movement! Of the 80s. Both singer and brotherr are great actors too!
Love that song!
Should check Simply Red!! With the song Money Too Tight To Mention!! UK 80s!!!
Simply a Beautiful song. When I think “80s” this is one of the several I believe will live on forever..
THIS SONG IS A MASTERPIECE OF JOY,LOVE AND EMOTION...10/10
For one that most people haven’t overheard, also try “Through the Barricades”.
A must to hear Tony's range👏👏
My absolute favourite!
another 80s track that doesnt get nearly enough reactors listening to it .
I've always loved this song, it's so smooth and mellow. Like Smokey Robinson's Crusin' Together. (Y'all should give that a listen!)
Word has it that Pm dawn when Pm dawn asked the guys if they could use the sample Tony Hadley loved it and asked if he could be in the video. I love it when bands are so gracious and want to share the love introduce the music to a brand new audience. That’s what music is all about.
Wow, you two never seem to amaze me! Such a classic song.
Seem 😂, did you mean cease or were you trying to roast them?
Are used to be a man called Adam Sandler and what he did was he made movies and he made a movie he did it was called The Wedding Singer A Wedding Singer that's what it was
About the water thing about The Wedding Singer was it had a lots of music lots okay yes this song it was in the movie and deed you're so correct baby
Is a 90s right the man was caught Adam Sandler making movies with The Wedding Singer all kinds of music is including this including this baby all right you know it you know that
Modern English was the group that boy was white as he could be I mean I'm a white boy myself but I mean brother this boy hey Friday white e but the E on yd all right
Thank you!! And here are two other varied but brilliant songs of SB: 'Through The Barricades'..... and.....'To Cut A Long Story Short'.
I'll always remember this song because I was starting the 2nd grade at a new school in a new state and I woke up 2 hours early and this song was playing on the radio. I didn't want to go to school and this song symbolizes the agony I was going through lol
If you have an FM radio in your truck I'm sure you heard it before because they used to play the crap out of it..lol..great reaction Lex as usual.
No HS Dance was final without this..
Hadn't heard this in... decades.
But I do remember hearing this tons in high school.
So many Brit Pop classics from back in the 80s. Check out the band Naked Eyes, for example.
Great music in the 80's!!
Whenever I hear this song it reminds me of my friend. He used to sing along with it. Sadly he's no longer with us, but this song will always bring a smile to my face. RIP my Friend
my sincere condolensces.
Had to take a break to appreciate this classic. I also forget who sampled it. I know P-Diddy sampled "every breath you take" (or maybe that was someone else too. ??)
Oh yes, this takes me back to my junior year in HS. When this came out I instantly loved it and that is saying a lot because I was more of a rocker/punk back then.
I read that Sade designed the suits Spandau Ballet wore in this video. Apparently, Sade was a designer before she became a famous singer.
The sample you’re thinking of is “set adrift on memory bliss” by P.M Dawn
I doubt they've heard the PM Dawn song. The track he was referring to is "You - Lloyd feat. Lil Wayne) ruclips.net/video/gfoD2ILKEYk/видео.html
This was really popular in the mid 80’s. Seems like a lot of good music came from the 70’s & 80’s ! 👍
Seems?? Pretty much 90% of music from the70s and 80s are considered bonafide classics now
I love how in every video Lex looks like a 5 year old that just got a cookie meanwhile Brad looks like he is questioning his life choices. 😂
Keep doing these videos, I love seeing y’all’s reactions!!
Through the Barricades. Through the Barricades!!! THROUGH THE BARRICADES!!!!!!
do it
I read somewhere long ago that Sade was a friend of the band and did their wardrobe styling for the video.
