In the jug question there is another solution: fill the 5 litter jug then pour it into the 3 litter jug, so now in the 5 jug 2 litter are left. Empty the 3 litter jug and pour the 2 litter from the big jug to the smaller jug. Fill again the 5 litter jug and pour 1 litter to the 3 litter jug. So now you have 4 litter. In your solution you waster 5 litter while in my solution you only waste 3
