47 yrs in machining business, a few things to keep in mind on a lathe. Make sure your tooling is on center with the center line of the chuck. ei. cutting tool point in line with center of work piece. Also be sure when grinding a tool bit the front and sides of the tool hve clearance so not to rube any surface youre machining. Run the spindle slower for bigger diameters to reduce tool wear and heat. Try to find a you tube channel on basic machining. With just the basics you will be able to do alot on a lathe
No need for coolant when turning cast iron, the graphite in the material does that job. Just get the tooling clearances correct and it cuts. 100% correct on your speed comment. It's all about speeds and feeds.
Ralphie is growing up to be a jack of all trades and Wawa is becoming a good mechanic for a female or a tom boy and squeezy is also be coming a very good artist and Josh and Marge are teaching good values and teaching others things that can use in later in life
Okay I found the oil filter you may have already found it since you did it but I found the housing and the style filter. It is one that they used on Old Jeep Willys Model number 11952 is the filter The housing is A1230
I absolutely love your family Josh. Thank you for sharing your life, adventures and projects with us. I sincerely appreciate a wholesome escape from this cruel world every week. Good bless you and your family.
Hey guys, read up on SFM when machining, it's very important to tool life, quick tip for centering your tool bit, eyeball the top of the tool with a center drill installed in your tailstock, it'll getcha close
Waited all week for another Sleeperdude video. Thanks Josh and family for the hard work and entertainment. Best channel on RUclips!!!! Hope you and your family have a Very Merry Christmas. God bless
I wanna see the kids paint this thing! Top to bottom, prep and everything, all THEIR work, with Dad only providing the guidance. Turbo cans. Even clear over the turbo can Rustoleum. Seems like it would make a great project and great video. Squeeze can recreate the old Zip Code guy logo for the side (maybe goat themed), get it printed on vinyl and slap it on.
Overcome, adapt, I Love this airing. Learning new things & doing it all together. Squeezy, get in there & learn too. Never hurts to know stuff you may not really be interested in. It may be applicable later in life. Ty y'all for taking us along. I really enjoyed it
FYI- The first "Modern" 3 wheel car was a 1948 Davis. Main problem was when you drive down a steep hill and make a hard 90 turn... it would tip over! I noticed your front frame was close to dragging dirt on your hard turns.. Please be careful.
What a blessing these 3 youngsters are. Working together as a family. Learning from mom & dad. Having fun. Injoy your blessings together. Much blessings from Clyde Texas
Quite a son you have there , its great to see someone his age with such an interest in getting his hands dirty and learning important life skills . Most kids now days dont even know how to check a cars oil. The world needs more parents like you all your kids are a treasure☺
I love wawa, she does not mind getting dirty. As long as there ain't a stink bug involved. And I think Ralphie is going to grow up to be a real fine Mackinac. And he's starting to look more and more like Josh everyday, lol. GAASIT!
imho Ralfie rather wil be like Chris from NoNonsenseKnowHow channel, all kind of three-wheeler tracktor hooverboat moto pick-up owner and super organised hoarder, packed with tools
I found myself smiling so much during this video my cheeks hurt. This was a GREAT video. Seeing Ralphie's face all smiles driving it around was awesome.
woohooooo 👏This sleeperdude-saturday-episode is definitely one i almost can't wait for to see ! Seeing Ralphie learning and Josh teaching hem as i look into the thumbnaill makes me so happy, cause he's learning from the best . Josh is(to me) a true mechanical wizzard and a awsome dad ! I know this one episode is gonna be a awsome epic one. Hopefully also seeing wrenching on the cars and seeing the animals ! As always God bless you and I ❤️ y'all. greetings from Holland 👏🫡🙏🏻🚘🔧🇺🇲
I used to toy around with one in high school 70's and parts are there , a guy down in Texas bought a bunch , the engine on mine had bad coils so I used a 450 Honda coil , I took all the covering off so it was a flat bed with no cab ...... it was a blast to run around on ...... wish I had kept it
To all the sleeperdude family Great video. Laughed with you when you were driving that mail Cushman. Ralphie did a great job with that exhaust. I did that on my 1960 VW Karmann Ghia. Used to race tt at the drag strip. But I am glad to see you have fun while teaching your kids work Values. Have fun while your kids are young. God Bless
I've seen people on RUclips say that spark plugs come pre-gapped, and don't need to be gapped. I would check anyway, because you don't know how much they get banged around during shipping. It only takes a minute, and could save a lot of aggravation. Thank you for another great video. It's so much fun watching all of you and your adventures. All the best to you all.
This reminds me of the times when I was a child. Family working together, playing together and knowing your neighbors. Today we are so individual we are TOO isolated. I love this channel.
I think the most fascinating part of this video is you guys remembering how the pieces go back together. Especially since different parts were removed by different people.
This is a fun update video on this trike. It has come the full way from unloved and lost in the woods, to home and happy. And this from a writer who HATES ICE engines
My good friend Master, I am very happy to see you all together. As a family, to rebuild, all the cars, and I don't miss any of their trips. How I wish I had a family like yours, Master. Merry christmas. and. new new year
I was a machinist for quite a while. Have ol Ralph do some homework about getting tools on center. When your tool is on center things cut easier, tools last longer, and surface finish improves
A rubber donut from bmw or Mercedes drive shaft may fit your flange. I don't think straight bolts will hold together very long.. vibration will be crazy. Ask me how I know. Lol
25:41 drill a small hole to see how thick it is. When you get reall close slow down the speed of the part then it doesn’t fly about when you part it off. I run a lathe for my job.
It's good to see the kids working on a vehicle together that's kind of neat and also you can also practice your welding if you just get some aluminum or steel and make yourself a gas tank
Sleeper dude I got to say you're living the American dream most people only dream if being able to work at home and work with their family extend as much time with your family as you get to and that's all dude the good hard work that you do and them anyway just wanted to put that out there because I am a fan I think I've been watching you probably since you first video
I’d love to have a bench lathe like that. I wish I could have showed y’all some things about it. Looks like yall are doing pretty good. Just please be safe and respect that thing.
Hi josh marge sweezy wawa and ralphie it nice to see rockey back in the shop . You all looked like you where enjoying yourselves nice that wawa getting more conifedent to help work on the cushman .you are great dad to teach your kids on working on cars they are learning great life skills keep doing what you are doing another good video
The key to get a tool to cut on a lathe is getting it on on center vertically. When you change cutting tools that are different thickness you need to bring the tool up or down to get it back on center. ( pro tip)
That thing is just awesome , so glad you got it running , to bad you were not in Canada , I have lost of new parts , have a generator with same engine , good luck with all your projects your family show is just great ,thanks for all the entertainment .
That was awesome/impeccable when you got it running good and the kids were laughing and having fun driving it on the front yard in the dark, that was the best part
On machining those drums, the key thing to remember is... all of the movement in the final assembly, will be centered around the axle it is mounted on. So, when you're indicating, getting it squared up in your chuck... first and foremost, you want that center bore, running true and secondarilily perpendicular to the wheel mounting surface. The outer rim of the drum, is really and afterthought, as nice as it would be for that to be running true as well... at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. Because you're cutting it off anyway. Anyhow... that's my two cents on how I would approach it. Take it for what it's worth. Dig the projects! Made me smile to watch Wawa humming to herself while she was tearing down the rear axle joint... she's in the zone. 😂
After years of saying “stops on a dime”. This is the first time hearing “and giving you 8 cents change “. I like it. Of coarse I liked seeing Gary way more.
Waaaay too funny! The hard work paid off on that little truck. I noticed a section of the fence was mowed down on the test track/yard. Just gonna act like I didn't see that. Lol
The inner drum looked nice and concentric, and I agree that the casting was all over the place. Awesome job winging it on the lathe for some noobies. Y'all will love having it around
A few lathe tips When a parting tool is used on a lathe, you may want to slow the RPM down for that big of a diameter pc like that brake drum. Make sure that the cutting edge of the tool is on centerline or a few thousandths below centerline for best results. When you have the time, making a portable height gage or stand to set on the lathe`s ways up to tool edge will make it easier and quicker to set the tool at the proper height.Knowing how fast the chuck should be turning will come in time by how the chips are coming off the tool for optimal cutting so you don`t burn up your tool and how much pressure it takes to cut metal..Grinding a cutting tool with proper clearance will keep it from rubbing which generates excess heat, you want the edge do the cutting.
So nice to watch such a nice family Josh and Marge and the kids have talents that impress me. Thank you for the awesome content and cool projects Duncan Austin Texas
Get ready for a hundred people telling you what you should have done to part that drum face off. Sorry for the multiple comments, Im a machinist and I love seeing your boy jump right into it. We need more young ones in the trade

It just occurred to me that a couple of squared off trailer fenders could be trimmed to width and make great flairs for the back of that 3wheeler. They would create the opportunity to add wider wheels and tires m, helping to stabilize it.
Another great ideo from my favourite RUclips family. Heres an idea for some content: Take the engine out of one of Ralphies pickups and put it in the Grabber Maverick for Waawaa (she really seemed to like that car and Ralphie really doesent need two pickups and a Corvette so could spare the engine for it!!). Do some suspension and brake upgrades then teach WaaWaa how to race it in either autocross or grass track events. Also let Squeezy do some art work on the car, it may spark an interest for her if shes contributing with something she likes doing and is really good at. If she could do this she would most likely get more involved in the future. Just an idea for you guys!
Another IMPECCABLE Saturday afternoon with the Sleeperdude family. Thanks for giving this old Iowan sitting in an icy world some great video. Merry Christmas!!
I just LOVE the way the whole family gets together and works on all of y'all vehicles!!! Don't worry, I know sooner than later you will find out what's the problem is and fix it!!!!😂❤
You should use the 4 jaw chuck if you are putting a machined surface in the jaws that needs to be concentric with the part you are machining. If you are machining a part that will be cut off of the material in the chuck, you can use the 3 jaw.
Woohoo waited all week then the wifi was down and got it back just in time for Sleeperdude! Good luck on the project today, and I hope thi kids have a blast in that old mail truck! 🙏🙏🙏
So glad to see you all got this running. Another fun time video. Noticing the need for a Sleeperdude Knit hat for cooler climates. Merry Christmas to all.
so glad to see it running . if you want to make sure that the points shaft is perfectly flat . chuck it up in the lathe and face it off . if you want to remake the drive coupler . take the good piece to a machine shop with a CNC mill , they could probably make one super quick . you could also run a new brake line to the front and make it work . maybe also . try to mount a wheel and tire that match the rears . such a fun video
