Actually Bhotia dog breed takes its name from the ancient Bhotia mountain people, who used to originally breed such dogs for herding and guarding of sheep and cattle. At one time, the Bhotia people were the original native inhabitants of 80% of the Himalayan ranges and environs , they used to be mostly nomadic and pastoral but over time, now, most Bhotias are settled in agriculture and other work, in different parts of India (Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim) as well as in Nepal and Bhutan..They have a very fine and intricate culture and very interesting traditions, quite close to Tibetan pastoral Buddhists /Buddhism. The word "Bhotia" is also derived from the Tibetan word for "Buddhist". I really think that anthropologists here should do more research on many diverse aspects of Bhotia culture and such research should be publicly shared , so we can all understand better.
