every boy should be DOING the Basics of Gardening, Carpentry, Masonry, Blacksmithing, Tailoring, & misc before wasting their time with the the Study of Reading/Writing, Arithmetic, Alchemy (Chemistry & Physics), & the LIBERAL ARTS.... I like how in cutting down the one tree They/you left the little tree grow and did not cut down the sapling, every boy scout should see that. Nice work in the snow. Yes, wonderful landing, working in the snow is special.
i removed the trees from the forest with the help of my neighbors truck (i wanted to get them out using horse, but the horse was too weak and old) until spring came. then i peeled them down. and then in the end of a spring hew them.
It seems like you guys really appreciate these tools, its great to see that. I did notice a few safety concerns though that you may or may not have been aware of. I saw someone at 1:35 walk around directly behind the tree as it was falling. Never a good idea, it could buck up and spring at you. Also, when felling with the axe, its better on your back if you make your notches at a more comfortable height, unless you need all of the material possible for a particular project.
its also a real mans workout, it really does take some skill to do. I know ive seen people that don't know how to properly swing and make cuts and it takes them twice as long as me. Aim and power will always be better.
The 'odd grip' on the axe is called 'choking down' -the idea is to get closer to the head and get more control rather than using the full length of the shaft as a fulcrum to swing around. For the benefit of James Klash....
