1803 5.5 million in the US
Most of the population lives between the atlantic ocean and the mississippi river
US buys a huge area of land known as Louisiana
No one really knew what was in that land
They knew natives lived there but they didn’t know what they were like
Is there a possible way to get from one side of the continent to the other side just by water?
President jefferson got curious and wanted to help American traders and farmers
The president sent a group of explorers to discover the west they were called corps of discovery
The leaders were named Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
They left from St. Louis on May 14, 1804
They went up the Missouri river
Rivers were the fastest way to travel at the time
The Missouri river was dangerous and moved quickly
Traveled through the great plains
They went through Missouri,Nebraska and south Dakota
Spend first winter at fort Mandan North Dakota
Moved into montana
No maps
They thought it was a representation of the garden of eden
Lots of valuable animals
You could see the swiss alps
Came through summer of 1805
They had traveled over 3,000 kilometers
Lots of different ecosystems
All interactions with natives were good
“Smoked in the pipes of peace
The area they went through with the natives was known for children and families
Natives are still around today
The natives land started shrinking when more americans came to the west
One the the goals of lewis and clark was to find out where the Missouri river started
Sacagawea
Lewis and clark needed help of the native people known as the Shoshone because they were in need of horses
For a month or so a Shoshone guide lead the Lewis and Clark through the mountains on horseback
Minimal food
No easy way to get to the pacific ocean
They described 300 plants and animals
They drew a map
They sold animals skins to Asia and Europe
Jefferson's dream was that they would find something there that was important and they did
