Oh god 😱 So I didn’t even realise I had it set to 1.25 speed guys. The song still sounded good though, it kind of rocks at both speeds. So sorry though! Wasn’t for copyright purposes at all. I don’t monetise my videos so idc about copyright :)
Serbia's slowly becoming the quirky cousin of the Eurovision family with the taste that not everyone necessarily understands, but those who do REALLY get it and gel with it. Case in point, me. Just like last year (which was my fave in the entire contest), I have no doubt this will get a vote or two from me in May. I just love the many layers it has (the video game references, the lobster, the techno that then turns into borderline industrial metal... loads to dig into). Hvala Srbija!
@@micikviz I just looked it up - the original was a lobster placed over an old phone receiver with an attached dial, whereas Luke only has the lobster, like it was a mobile. I love that, very clever touch 🦞
Love this. Totally unique and abstract and is definitely one of my favourites. That dark industrial pop sound is really cool and something we haven't really seen before. His voice isn't fully to my tastes but I got over that quite quickly, and I love his vocal delivery. I hope Serbia keeps up this trend of bringing something avant-garde and different because they were my favourite last year and this one will almost definitely be in my top 10, maybe top 5.
In my top 3. I'm crazy about these sounds. Some "old" (thinking Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Bowie) pared with new gaming. I can't believe this kind of music is going to Eurovision. Happy :)
Finally someone understanding his vocal performance. I've seen both people in Serbia and Eurofans say that the vocal performance is underwhelming and bad, but it's meant to be more subdued.
Thanks for your review Rachel. This is one of my favourite songs from this year. It’s really seriously cool and amazing. Serbia really know how to serve us high quality music. Last year Konstrakta and now Luke. Serbia is starting to become one of my favourite countries in Eurovision. They give us quality! This song makes me excited. I think it will do really well. Thankyou Serbia!👍
Rachel I love your reactions and analysis so much and so happy you mentioned Crystal Castles and TR/ST, love both. Also Serbia is so far my favorite entry of 2023
This is the one to beat. Very popular due to that intrigue element. Nobody will go and pop the kettle on after 30 seconds of watching this for the first time.
The video game aesthetics make you feel like you're in a movie. Many of us gamers will really LOVE this one! Would like to see more LOBSTER in the grand final, if hopefully he makes it! Luke is amazing - he wrote most of the song himself and did the staging with LITTLE funding, so we should support him!
Seriously??? That was made with a little budget?! If so, WOW! If they keep the same on Eurovision stage and just adjust the best camera angles, that staging will be memorable!!!
First time I saw someone mentioned vocals in a good way! II love how you always analyze song deeply in a musical basis only. But I also wanted to hear your opinion regarding the staging. :D Greetings from Belgrade and glad you liked the song!:)
The message is the humanity is asleep and the world is burning, we are distracted with things like computer games and need an urgent wake-up call ... when he says " hello" that is a reference to the game sims ... the way the character looks up and says hello when the game is left on pause ...
Omg you're back!!! I hate watching reaction videos but for some reason I really enjoy yours haha feels like I'm on a facetime call with a friend reacting to songs😝also I love that you know what you're talking about
This song is a critique of the modern society and contemporary world. He makes connection with a video games where young people are, artistically speaking, controlled by someone else and are just observers of all the horror happening around the Globe. If you carefully look the performance you will see that they are dancing as zombies as they are under anesthesia not reacting on this "world on fire" as he notices. At the end of the song he "releases" those "controlled" masses in order to become more active, more energetic and they together react - walk, make changes together. The "hello" part was written inspired by the Sims game, where the characters wave the player when they want something, instead of taking action, so he uses a parallel with people today.
"Samo mi se spava" means "I just wanna sleep". The song is about people escaping the harsh reality by entering an imaginary/virtual world. Luke wrote this song during the pandemic when he was distressed about the situation in the world and found comfort in the world of video games and dreams. He wants to tell people that this is not a healthy coping mechanism and that we shouldn't close our eyes while evil is happening. The scenery resembles the movie Matrix, he unplugs the people from the Matrix because he wants them to wake up. The song has a very modern electronic sound that represents the dream-like state and escapism into virtual reality. I'm really glad that you like the song, it's my favorite for this year. It's so engaging and original. 12 points from Croatia ❤
Yess, really happy that you did this one haha, i only first listened to it yesterday, but immediately thought youd really like it as well haha. That first loud synth really made me fall in love with the song and that huge darksynthy bass underneath just makes it feel otherworldly! :D Also i've heard people say that his voice isn't that amazing. Personally i think it fits the song very well, as it somehow amplifies the feeling of him telling a story through the song and it makes it feel way more artistic! Imo, this isn't just a song, it's art haha ;p Solid 9/10 from me :)
I loved `Luke Black weekend` when the collective concious was energised towards Luke Black winning. My head was in my hands at the results. This will do a Konstrakta.
Thanks for this analysis Rachel! I'm very excited by this one and I'm so pleased that Serbia did not hold back this year again. The hook in this song has wormed its way into my brain. The way they play with structure is just lovely and I totally agree that they have made it all hang together. Croatia is fun and daring and makes a serious anti-statement, but I'd definitely fear that the audience is wrong-footed early on in the track and puts too much work on a casual audience to decode. This song leads us into the weirdness in a compelling way. One of the best this year. Off to view your Spain analysis now :)
And we all thought Konstrakta was weird ... This is a really unique song. It's every bit as artistic and as well-structured as last year, and I reckon it will qualify. I too wondered why it sounded a bit faster than it should. Watching it on the screen it looks and sounds so funny, especially at 4:21 when he waves his hand in the air . I'm surprised you didn't think it was weird at the time. As for "faking your reactions", my pet hate at this time of year is the usual RUclips Eurovision suspects (not naming names) posting up videos with the caption/thumbnail saying, "First reaction", and a picture of their astounded face. And then you'll watch it and see them singing along, or saying that they loved it when they first heard it. A lot of people watch reaction videos to see someone's actual FIRST reaction to something, not just another video designed to get likes, comments, and money. I've stopped watching videos by these people now. Rant over 🙂
Luck wrote the lyrics and music and script for the performance. The song is not empty, it has a message. He says he just wants to sleep while the whole world burns. He wants to run away from problems because it is easier for him to defeat the devils on his shoulder. Criticism is directed at the society we live in because we do not deal with problems but run away from them.
If 8.5/10 is what you scored judging it by the wrong speed, I would imagine it would be 10/10 at the right one INCLUDING the lyrical content (an underlying essence of it, really) you haven’t even calculated in.
I like this even though it wasn't my favourite from the national selection. It reminds me (for some reason) of Ukraine 2018. The juries didn't like that one much so I wonder what will happen with this one. Should do all right in the final.
The SOUND PRODUCTION is otherworldly! The STAGING with the visuals is mesmerizing and immersive. They both feel like an awesome game I want to play. Truly epic. These two elements are so good they could be practically winner-worthy in my book. Definitely Top 5 if not Top 3. For real. But I also think they are doing ALL the heavy lifting. For example, I'm pretty sure the staging is doing a good (if a bit deceptive) job of painting a very different, much more positive picture than the actual lyrics. I'm only saying this because I've seen a bunch of RUclips threads with comments how this is a super inspirational song. I'd argue that is definitely the case with the sound and the staging, but not when it comes to the lyrics. Please hear me out. Because I LOVE the sound so much it pains me to say that I find the lyrics problematic. And I know my comment won't be winning any populariry contest here. I'd love to hear your constructive argument. For example, a Serb told me the song speaks to them because the younger Serbian population many times doesn't see much hope in the way the country is run. So, here's what is bugging me. I think that if people only HEARD this song (and paid actual, closer attention to the lyrics) instead of seeing it (the visuals on stage), I'm pretty sure many would find the lyrics rather depressing, passive, hopeless and nihilistic. As far as I can tell, the only instance where any positive action is taken is the verse "Želim samo večno spati. Tako da ih pobedim", which means "I just want to sleep forever. So that I can defeat them"...which is maybe a strange way to expect a positive result, but hey, maybe I don't get it. And the verse "I just want to get it over with" even implies suicide. The rest of the time, Luke "just wants for sleep" and watch the world burn. The staging compensates for these shortcomings of the lyrics. For example, in contrast to the radio version of this song, in the second half of the performance, they added a cool voiceover "This. Ends. Now!" and Luke then wakes up the sleeping, enslaved humans/Sims so they become free and alive again. At the end of the song the screen also shows "Enemy defeated". Also, just by default, the fast beat of the song makes us feel more alive and awake. But the lyrics just don't tell the same story. I think Luke just needed to change a verse or two towards the end and say something about actually deciding to rise up and do something. The lyrics sadly end with the world still burning. I commend Luke for writing about such a dark topic. I really do. We need more daring songwriters. But I think we also need them to inspire hope, not bleakness and passivity. Or at least not mask their true meaning with visuals that try to paint a different picture. That sound and beat kind of make up for any shortcomings, tho. Again, amazing sound, if I wouldn't get so hung up on the lyrics this would be in my Top 3. SOUND: 10 VISUALS: 10 STAGING AND PERFORMANCE: 9 SINGING: 7 LYRICS: 5
Oh my God, you listen to TR/ST? 😍 He’s one of my favorite artists! Also, this song has a really cool meaning. It’s basically a critique of nihilism and social apathy. He talks about feeling sleepy while the world burns, saying how desensitized we have become to all the terrible stuff that’s happening.
To understand.. The lotus is the flower in which he is, and the symbol of wisdom and spirituality. Salmon is a fish that symbolizes regeneration. It is easier to sleep than to look at the darkness around you. The screen says it all, without words. Hunger, war,.. Monsters, .. Who are the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse? Screen, translate. As he unplugs them, zombies, monsters lose power. We live so that we choose sides, that we are controlled like robots, and we sleep. That's why he says fight.. Live a free life.. And in the end enemy defeated. This is a song about the world we live in and how we do nothing, but we should love ourselves and everyone around us. We have to regenerate But only if we are smart.. We don't live in lalaland And there are plenty more love songs.. I love you, I don't love you o we are left we grieve for him blah blah blah... Excellent scene, story, message, lesson, music, clean art.
Yeah, I liked this one too. Good industrial rival to Finland. I hope some of the folks veering towards Germany will vote for this instead -- in place of very poser metal, something metal-adjacent like industrial is a better choice to have.
Hi Rachel, and thank a lot for your reaction and interesting opinion in the Serbian entry. I like this kind of electro dance music a lot and I find this entry very very exciting and moving. For me not a winner song though, I think not even a top10 finish. But congrats to Serbia for this original entry. You know, this year the French entry has recently stole my heart, and I 'm looking forward to watching your reaction to it.
It sounds very similar to so many other ESC songs over the years. His vocal isn't as strong as many of the other men in the ESC competition. "Robotic" isn't what I look for in vocal performances! (; I give it a 6. I hope Rachel will do a reaction video to Andrew Lambrou's Break a Broken Heart, Cyprus's entry. It is my only 10 this year, I love it so much! (so of course it has no chance!) (;
8.5 for this and Tattoo 8.? Hmm.. I don't know if I heard some amazing vocals in this song. I don't know if I even can call this s song. Maybe just piece of something.😂
This song is modern, artistic, musically complex. lyrics with a deep meaning. Luke is a complete artist. He wrote the music, lyrics, arrangement, he is the co-producer and he gave the idea for the scenography and actively participated in its creation. For some, his voice may be weak, but in the song he deliberately sings in a dreamy, sleepy voice in accordance with the lyrics of the song.
This song is 2023 entry. Original, fresh, creative, distinctive. Loreen's one has already been experienced more than 10 years ago, because it resembles so mush to Euphoria, and it lacks something new. Luke's song on the other hand, should be recognized as the winner pattern for upcoming esc quality entries. Absolutely deserves to be higher valued than Sweden this year.
I didn't like it too much, I don't like his way of singing, Or should I say whispering and moaning? For me that ruins the song, I don't see her in the top 10 they will have to improve this performance
Oh god 😱 So I didn’t even realise I had it set to 1.25 speed guys. The song still sounded good though, it kind of rocks at both speeds. So sorry though! Wasn’t for copyright purposes at all. I don’t monetise my videos so idc about copyright :)

Haha, I thought it sounded different! I already like it but it's even better that tiny bit faster
No worries! 😊
this song is Luke's own product so i believe that is the reason why it is so good
No worries, it sounds even better 😁

The SOUND PRODUCTION is otherworldly!
The STAGING with the visuals is mesmerizing and immersive. They both feel like an awesome game I want to play. Truly epic.
These two elements are so good they could be practically winner-worthy in my book. Definitely Top 5 if not Top 3. For real. But I also think they are doing ALL the heavy lifting. As far as I can tell, the only instance where any positive action is taken is the verse "Želim samo večno spati. Tako da ih pobedim", which means "I just want to sleep forever.
😂
Thank you from Serbia!
