A little practice does go a long way. When you've mastered the original "otaiko" technique with the other more formal obi, this one is an easy one to do ^^

Thank you so much for doing this video. My daughter wants to try it for our Sakura celebration in Tokyo this year!

Super cool obi ! I really love the hanhaba obi you used *-* where did you have it ? I think it could be a really good way to do this musubi with an hanhaba

Where did I get this obi from? I Think it was Yahoo Japan Auctions a few years ago, can't exactly remember correctly.

I love this technique, I should give it a try. Looks tricky to get right though, did you have to practice a lot?

As long as you get both the tails to be the right length, it's no different than creating a otaiko musubi with a wider obi such as Nagoya & Fukuro obi.
I've done this particular musubi a couple times in the past but I did this video in 1 session without any practice beforehand. So what you see in the video is me tying this musubi for the first time after a few years since the last time I wore it.
Do know that I'm a visual learner so as long as I have a clear example, I learn pretty fast ^^

@@ChayatsujiKimono That makes sense, and it's pretty cool you learn so fast. I always need to practice a lot to get it just right. :) Thanks for the swift reply!

No problem! Happy to help ^^
Generally the better the example, the faster I'm able to learn. Depending on the musubi it can take a few hours or a few days for me to learn it.

Thank you for your kind words. I got this one through Yahoo Japan Auctions around 1.5 - 2 years ago, it was a private seller so I really don't know where they got it from originally :( Perhaps it's still available for you on Rakuten?

I've seen people using a pair of socks bunched/folded up that they put in a pair of pantyhoses instead of an obimakura. While it's not ideal, it does work. You could use a long scarf too and wrap the pair of socks in it.
Fluffy socks would work best as you want to have some bulk to mimic the obimakura ^^
(Ichiroya sells obimakura too and they're not expensive at all, if you are in need for one, I highly recommend checking them out.)
