If I still played trombone I would definitely get one of these as both a practice instrument and for informal outdoor performances. I hated the amount of money I spent getting the dents in the slide repaired! I'd still use the nice brass King for formal concerts, but I'd bet the money saved on klutz-related repairs would make a plastic horn pay for itself within three months. But the best part? I could get it in black and paint some bitchin' hot rod flames on it!

After listening a few times, I do hear that weird plastic-y sound that kid's instruments also have. Or the sound that happens when there's too much friction in a plastic tube slide, ouch

For kids or people that want to just play to play that would be fun, the sound of the tuba was actually pretty pure sounding, I believe the room and acoustics of the room wasn't in the tubas favor for a video, but as for total sound it was really well laid out for a plastic tuba, the trombone was the best plastic I have heard out of any instrument and the room was in favor of that one for a video, could only imagine what it sounded in person, awesome stuff guys.
I would have no trust in a plastic tuba. The instrument is hugely based on resonance, and plastic just doesn't sound the same to me.
SpectacularName well at $1400 vs $5000 for a low end brass instrument, it's still definitely going to fill an important niche.
You aren't wrong. If someone is serious about tuba, this isn't for them. Otherwise, I guess it's an okay starter.

Cole Drinkwater There are several factors worth considering. How serious are you about getting into tuba? If you want to play it just for school, rent one. If this is your life's passion (which I doubt you could know), invest more. If you really must own one and aren't super serious about tuba/don't want to spend enough on a serious tuba, this might be the thing for you. I suggest that you talk to your teacher (assuming you have one) about what he or she recommends for a beginner.
Cole Drinkwater if you're just starting, ask the school if you can rent. It is better to try around and make sure the instrument fits you. If you absolutely have to buy a tuba then go with metal. But a good brand..
I liked the presentation of these plastic instruments. They must be very light, they must be well tuned. Very cool. Congratulations to those who had this idea of building them.

I bought one of the first Tiger tubas; I ordered it directly from the Chinese factory, not through a distributor, and they said I was their first customer in America (although some had been sold at music trade shows, and they could not track where those customer were from). I played it a lot, in all sorts of ensembles, and it really does work quite well, blows nicely, is as in-tune as any other tuba I have experience with, and the other musicians and conductors I have played with were happy with its sound.
But I rarely play it anymore, for one simple reason. Keeping the valves working freely is a bit of a chore. The aluminum rotors inside the brass valve casings react metallurgically with each other, gradually slowing the valves down to a crawl. To get them working again requires complete disassembly of the valves, thorough cleaning, and re-lubrication.
The other issue with them is that, due to the rather loosely packed wraps of the tubing, the tuba is considerably deeper, front to rear, than any other 'German rotary' tuba design in CC/BBb size. The tuba has to sit more forward on the player's lap than I find comfortable, and I am constantly conscious of some tubing jabbing me in the belly.
These days, I usually just play it for a couple gigs every year, where I am expected to play it outdoors for Christmas-related programs. Compared to a brass tuba, this Tiger tuba is a joy to play in such situations. The air inside the tubing stays warmer for longer, so it stays in tube better in the cold, and also does not condense as much water from the breath, so it does not get into the 'frequent gurgle' scenario. It never feels cold to the touch like brass tubas do. The valves do not freeze up. To me, it is worth the minimal cost to have such an instrument in my arsenal for such extreme playing situations.
A good thing to do with this instrument, if it will be used only on occasion, MIGHT be to store it with the valve rotors removed and stored in a box, then just put in before playing and removed again afterwards. Then, there is no need for deep, laborious cleaning to remove the results of galvanic reaction (between aluminum and brass). Just squirt a bit of valve oil on and re-assemble before playing.
Since it appears that this same instrument is now being marketed under the "Cool Wind" name, I wonder if they might now be using more compatible metals in the valves?

I want a plastic tuba...I marched a sousaphone made out of some light weight non metal STUFF back in high school and it was amazing not being crushed under all that weight...barely felt it and it sounded great!

I don't play any instruments, but I can really appreciate the idea of making them less expensive so that more people can get into them. My high school had to choose between art and music classes because we had a tight budget, and since art is more accessible they went with that.

TM6624 That's why tuning slides were made. Every little dent makes the instrument a tiny bit smaller and therefore a little bit more sharp. Extending the tuning slides make it more flat to even all the sharpness out with the flatness.

My music department in school has started buying these trombones cause of there weight! The small 7-9 year olds can now actually hold up there trombone and play it! Also a big blue or pink trombone looks very appealing and fun to small children!!!

I'm a senior tuba player in my band, I think I know what its supposed to sound like. Just because the tuba's sound can be massive doesn't mean you play like that. It has to be musical. You can't overpower a melody.

They are mean't for student and kids who might not be able to handle a regular brass tuba or trombone, but still want to learn to play. Or for people who don't want to drop the money on a tuba/trombone just yet.
I play Bari sax, and those run into the 5000 range for just a fairly solid one. I can only imagine what a full sized tuba costs.
I think that it can be fun if used in certain shows, and to say that "well it doesn't look like a traditional tuba/trombone, so don't play it in front of people" is a bit elitist and kind of anti-fun.

No puffing cheeks
To play low notes, cheek puffing is actually quite necessary
not really, i play trombone and its quite easy to hit low notes without puffing

+ConnieVetTech I always like to think that as long as you keep your tone quality, puffing the cheeks is completely alright. Maybe its different for a brass (Plastic?), but for the saxophone family, its fine.
+William Cawthra As a Tuba player, I was taught that the correct technique was with no puffing of the cheeks. I also thought it made no difference, but I tried with puffing, and surprisingly, I get less air that way. To each his own though :)

If you notice with the bugle that the military uses, there are no valves or slide positions - notes change through "tightness" of your lips. Thus you can play the cavalry charge or taps.

have you ever seen dizzy Gillespie? He was one of the best trumpet players ever and he puffed his cheek alot.
But that was trumpet and his mouth around the mouthpiece was firm and shaped, a tuba player shouldn't puff their cheeks because of just how large the mouthpiece is.

DerpKrazy Your not wrong, but low brass players do puff their cheeks. Even some professionals. Everyone is different, but when it comes to high brass, puffing your cheeks is a no no.
This would be great for students to practice on at home, but use a school one for performances. I imagine they are quite cheeper.
Sorry, they still sound like plastic to me. Granted, I think these would be great for beginners, but that tuba sounds horrible. (or maybe it's just cause you're a trombonist. ;) )

The tuba is probably better than you give it credit for, the recording is usually what gives instruments awful sound, I would tend to blame low audio quality.
The main reason for the plastic sound is the plastic mouthpiece. Look up tiger plastic trombone on RUclips and the first video, he uses a metal mouthpiece and it sound just shy of a full brass instrument.
It isn't the recording making the instruments sound awful it's because plastic instruments are terrible. You don't get the same color as an instrument made of actual brass.
The tuba sounds a little too high to be a BBb tuba.

I see all these comments about how you should never get one and stuff like that, but right now I'm saving up 5500 dollars for an intermediate level tuba (that's actually really good for that price) so if this is much cheaper (probably a couple hundred but I haven't checked yet) then it's probably worth just to keep around the house and practice.
