      Omar Rangel Okay.
      Rihanna - Diamonds (It's about Rihanna's grandmother.)
      Sia - Ellastic Heart (It's about Sia fighting with depression.)
      Sia - Chandelier (Relationship with alcohol.)
      Kwabs - Walk (Leaving the past behind and moving on.)
      Basically every song by Twenty One Pilots
      This was it for now, it's not that much, because I don't like pop (I prefer Suicide Silence, thanks), but I can look up more good pop music, or even dubstep and rap if you want me to. It just annoys the hell out of me how people generalize every single genre into one word and can't accept that every genre has their own treasures and weaknesses, because these kind of thoughts lead to constantly judging people, which I hate the most in this f*cked up Earth. Metalheads are easily angered by called satanists and evil, and yet they are the first to sh*t on your face and say what the 'true', 'REAL' metal is. Come on people. Life gets so much better when you stop hating on pop music for no actual reason.

  • @EmmaNightingale

    One biggest reasons why I started to listen metal,are mostly bcs of lyrics. Firstly, band members write lyrics for their band,and pop "let's call it artists" let other people to write their songs. And it's stupid to say that metal lyrics are mostly satanic,many bands(not every) have word of wisdom. And if you read few lyrics of metal songs,and if you have just a little bit of brain,you will understand the meaning. And I laughed so much on that part when you started to recite: plane, train,grenade... xD

    • @EmmaNightingale
      @EmmaNightingale 10 лет назад +6

      And I forget it to say about that part where you're saying how pop fans thinks that metal is most about satanism,corpse,death,etc... Well, I think that pop songs like Grenade,is about how guy will go to death,or become a corpse for one girl,whatever. But that's not bullshit,if Bruno Mars can respawn,after swallowing grenade,or jump front of train,or whatever.

      +Alex Root Don't forget to mention that these songs are popular for having only a catchy beat to them, while only taking them a month or less to come up with a song.
      A good metal or rock band would not come out with a good album or a song years later. They would put more effort into their songs than pop artists.

      Metalforlife thats just one of the many reasons why ive always liked metal/rock is it takes a band made up of several people to make it sound good there has to be alot of communication between the members, where as if i went out and asked someone "hey can you name the people who made the instrumental for the new drake song" they would have no idea, only whoever was singing

    • @XxpurplezombiexX
      @XxpurplezombiexX 8 лет назад +3

      Many artists don`t even create their own songs or lyrics. Just add voice, auto tune and or simple beat to the song and you have another hit.

    Death, later The Faceless, Opeth, post Heartwork-era Carcass, early In Flames, Misery Index, Nile, Rings of Saturn, At The Gates etc. all have pretty interesting lyrics for different reasons. People need to be exposed to lyrics like that before they can talk shit about a whole genre - I don't talk shit about all of rap or all of pop, so why do people do the same with other genres? I dont have a problem with people who likes pop music. what I have a problem with is that most of the pop musician today dont have anything to do with their songs. the record companies writes their lyrics and music, some time even adjust their voice with the computer, and all they have to do is to stand there look pretty and do what they are told to do. about the lyrics. most pop hit songs today, the one that are played in MTV etc.., have a very similar lyrics because thats what catches. if you want MTV to play your song it has to be by their terms of how the song should be. but... even in old rock and blues songs they sing about the same things. Hendrix, led zeppeline have a lot of songs about a women or sex. I just like those songs more because I like things that were play mostly on instruments and by a band of equal people, not by a singer and a bunch of players that no one knows there name and just sit in the back while the singer gets all the appreciation. that why I like metal music more, song that are played by a band of equals where every one is appreciated.

  • @PleasureToGrill

    Obscura got some great lyrics about space and philosophy, also new politically themed Kreator rules (Mille's got some impressive writing skills I think), Behemoth (not that stereotype satanism thing), Ahab (seafaring and whaling), Nile, Ex Deo, Rotting Christ (Egyptian/Roman/Greek history/mythology) or even As I Lay Dying (Christian, but not evangelizing)...not to mention Iron Maiden of course, with their very broad spectrum of lyrical themes (history, films, literature, religion etc.). Maybe that's the quality of metal lyrics in general and the most fundamental difference to pop lyrics: its topical variety, which also include the "dark" and "occult" aspects of our world (war, death, mind control, extremism, crime, suicide, mythology, violence, destruction, horror, insanity etc.). Those things are excluded in the biggest part of pop music, it's some kind of whitewash to me, for life isn't only about sex, love, party, dancing or showing off with luxury goods. But to look beyond that you've got to take a minute and use your brain - which most people don't seem to have the time, motivation or capabilites for.

    • @PleasureToGrill
      @PleasureToGrill 11 лет назад +2

      You're definitely right, Death Metal (or Extreme Metal in general?) is very nihilistic, at least the vast majority of songs. And trying to imagine someone like Rihanna, James Blunt or Katy Perry singing about such "dark" things...yeah well, you already named it: ridiculously offensive and insincere. Besides that I don't think that pop music defines pop themes, I guess it's the other way around: songs about "positive" topics like love, party etc. become popular and thereby pop music. Back in time artists like The Doors, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones have been pop music, and they definitely covered a much wider scope of topics than today's pop musicians. Times have changed I guess, capitalism and consumption now dominate the western world, leaving most people no time or motivation to deal with the "dark" sides of our world and souls.

      Marco Camargo I've already pointed this out to many people hahah, there's actually A lot of pop artists (only in the last 2-3 years.) who have pentagrams in their videos, it's for "shock" value which is VERY ironic because they condemn Death metal bands for the same thing.... when death metal bands never really utilized satanic lyrics and rarely imagery.
      To be fair to them Thrash metal was filled with satanic crap in the 80s as well as Black metal in the MID 90s (after the media had black metal everywhere.) but it's the same thing except their not playing metal music.

    Agreed!
    There are seemingly loads of people pointing their fingers at song’s meanings before even trying to relate to the lyrics themselves, and I think it becomes a problem as soon as they start judging people just because their preferences of music doesn’t speak to them.
    And even in the metal community (usually consisting of really open minded ppl) - there are metal heads who sadly would never admit to listening to anything ”soft”. It’s just silly.
    Obviously the only ”good songs/lyrics” are the ones that speak to you as an individual, and all people are different.

    From my expirience metal has really meaningfull lyrics, i listened to classic heavy metal, power metal, speed metal, thrash metal, death metal.
    Lets take Death for example, try listening to some songs from the Human or Symbolic album for example, or Testament or Slayer or whatever, they are far more intelectual than any music i ever heard.

    • @alexk1620
      @alexk1620 10 лет назад +3

      In what I've seen, any genre of music can have both meaningful and stupid lyrics. Rap (although I hate rap in general) can have intelligent lyrics, and metal can have meaningless lyrics like "I sneak in my own house, it's four in the morning, I had too much to drink, said I was out with the boys", or "Breaking the law, breaking the law!". Metal may have more creative and interesting lyrics than other genres, but not necessarily more meaningful (at least not MORE meaningful than other genres.). Although I agree with your mention of Symbolic. That album is pure poetry. "Take part in a diminishing breed, where complex turns to simplicity, when pain is acknowledged, frivolous calculations will be abolished." Oh man, just saying those words are awesome!

    I completely agree with you man, there's not enough time in the day to explain to people who don't get metal as a whole. except for maybe mainstream metal like Metallica, Ramnstien, and Slayer. I do think that metal lyrics are written more to the fans since most metal heads are always being challenged in life where as rap/pop it's more about the money and trying to get that flow right. In fact Nikki Minaj said that 1 of her videos was inspired by Dethklock lol. Musicians don't write lyrics we write music. Poets write lyrics, not to say that some musicians aren't also poets that are capable of writing their own meaningful lyrics. But when people judge a song or genre on their lyrical content that same argument can be made for any genre. Music should be judged on its complexity, talent, memorably, and not quite the meaningfulness of its lyrics. The reason why pop sucks is because it lacks complexity, and talent, but excels in memorably with simple rhythm and easy words that people can sing along and dance to. If you used the words from a pop song but changed the music to something complex and talentful, and change the way the lyrics are sung you could still have a kick ass song with the same lyrics. I'm not trying to say lyrics aren't important in a song but they should probably be the last thing to judge.

    Pop music is meaningful, and the lyrics are meaningful, but in my opinion, in a very generic way. Pop music is made, or manufactured, even, to appeal to mass audiences. That being said, it's easy to become a popular musician these days. Basically, you need a decent voice, a catchy tune that will be easily remembered, and lyrics that are vaguely artistic and relate-able. That's my opinion, I guess.

      I don't consider love to be a bad subject to sing about, plenty of metal songs theme it as well. Mostly my problem is that a lot of pop artists seem to dumb down their lyrics to appeal to mass consumption, even though the artists themselves seem like smart enough and creative enough people to reach a far higher standard of lyrics. To me music is still art and shouldn't suffer in quality just because a lot of people are unable to understand it else.
      On a side note, sadly plenty of metal bands have uncreative, meaningless or simply bad lyrics too. Why sing about something if you have nothing to say?.. It's not a phenomenon found only in pop music, though more common there

    All of the lyrics in pop/rap are the same. Listen to Hollow by Pantera or Fade To Black by Metallica, anything. That is pure emotion from the soul. Songs that can almost bring you to tears or want to fight or make you feel exhilarated whatever basically any emotion you can think of. Just pure and raw.

    There's this one bitch at work who pisses me off constantly. When the kitchen is empty I have some metal playing out of my phone. Everything from Black to Power metal. I love it all. every damn day she says 'It's just shouting, anyone could do that. My 2 year old can do it'.......She said this whilst I was listening to fucking Helloween. I used to try and defend it and give her some info on it but no I just give up and the more she complains the heavier the stuff is that comes out of the speakers. I hate how narrow minded some people can be.

    The meaning one can find in song lyrics is completely subjective. Some people are raised on pop, some on metal, classic rock, country, punk, hip-hop, folk, etc. Why is it that we think just because someone hasn't been exposed to a certain type of music that that makes them intellectually lesser than the rest of us? If someone can find meaning in "Baby, baby, baby, OHH," then more power to them. We have no right to say that their experience of a certain lyric holds no merit simply because we can't perceive it.

    • @horatiolampjaw8576
      @horatiolampjaw8576 10 лет назад +1

      to be honest meaning is basically irrelevant in music

    • @epicnate98

      Horatio Lampjaw
      How so?

    • @horatiolampjaw8576
      @horatiolampjaw8576 10 лет назад

      epicnate98 like you said, meaning is subjective. because of this, the issue of whether or not a song has meaning is naturally way too contentious and should therefore be disregarded completely so that the quality and expression of feeling in music, regardless of whether or not it's fabricated, can be improved. i'm sure there are plenty of people who would take a song that's "true" or "real" to them over one that actually sounds good - again, to them. the point is, meaning takes a backseat to quality almost all of the time. that's just my two cents anyway.

    • @epicnate98
      @epicnate98 10 лет назад

      Horatio Lampjaw I'm sorry, but I find it hard to accept that just because something is controversial, it should be thrown to the wayside. I do find lyrics and the subjective "meaning" of those lyrics among alternative/metal music to be overrated, but I also believe that lyrics can be an enhancement of the musical experience. I can understand why some might say that the music and the lyrics need to be observed separately, but I personally see them as one and the same.

    • @Rimorox
      @Rimorox 9 лет назад

      epicnate98 yes, I know many people who think of lyrics as the 'most important part' of the music (majority of people I talk to actually) but when I listen to music, generally I don't pay attention to the lyrics until hearing the song a lot, or I am learning the song on guitar and plan to sing it. For me I like to listen to the music as a whole and for me the lyrics go to the back seat (you really can only focus on so much at once, especially metal).
      So I believe lyrics are subjective, and good lyrics definitely make a band more mature (for example Asking Alexandria's old tracks vs their newest album, the lyrics are much more mature) but I don't believe for me they make or break the song. Hell I listen to Attila that writes music about haters and stuff, and now I respect when a metal band does have good meaningful lyrics (memphis may fire for example) but to me it makes no difference in the experience what they're talking about.
      I think if it did most people who listen to metal could be stereotypically crazy if they were to listen to the lyrics and take them as they are, so I usually ignore them ("put a gun to my head, paint the walls with my brains, put a gun to my head, paint the walls" - alligator blood - bring me the horizon). I see validity both ways but for me I just love badass sounding or great sounding music as a whole and take that before the lyrics.

    I'm not one to stereotype or anything like that but most people who I have met that listen to pop music are probably one of the most uneducated people when It comes to music. Some people just like a simple beet on a keyboard and the image that's what music is today..... Crap!
    I'm pretty open minded when it comes to music and when I say music I mean people in a band not on a laptop pushing buttons.

    • @knutelindstrom3716
      @knutelindstrom3716 9 лет назад

      What if you don't know how it was made, but when hearing it you like it & then later find out someone had mixed it together on their laptop using tracks from a bunch of other songs? Even though I agree that music involves playing an actual instrument, there are some ppl who have a talent for mixing, even if they can't play an instrument. They can hear distinct pieces within songs, take them out, slow it down or speed it up, maybe add effects, & cobble together a song made up of tracks played by other ppl! I'm not sure I could call them a musician as they didn't play it themselves, but they put the song together, so maybe they are a music producer/engineer! That kind of talent is important in studios when recording bands & mixing their albums, but as for the rappers who basically only spit their rhymes over pre made beats, I don't think I can consider that being a musician either, as anyone can do it, but do it really well takes a lot of practice! I look for sincerity in music more than anything! Real music is sincere & usually personal, not made for fame & fortune, or to impress ppl, or hoping ppl will like it & buy it, otherwise why bother? At least to me anyway, I write songs bcuz it's what I feel, while most do it bcuz of the attention or money that it can bring. I don't have a state of the art studio & I don't have the image or fashion to be commercially acceptable so I'll never have to worry about fame! That would really suck to be famous! No one can control who becomes a fan or what they do in your name, as some of them are completely insane & obsessed! It's really sad how much ppl obsess over celebrity & most aren't even sincere, they're just as fake as the products they push! We're well overdue for another rock revolution & hopefully the next one will be a catalyst for social change as well! ROCKNROLL!

    dude nice video , I already suscribed , what you said about listening to diferent things that aren't metal metal it kinda reminded to me a bit , I have a black metal band I started it 5 years ago I'm 21 btw , and my favorite singer is Bruce Springsteen , I have all his collection ,a lot of his merchandising , and I also listen to other things like the cure , joy division , the smiths , johnny cash ,etc. and I tell you this because there's a lot of people who thinks that if you listen to metal specially if you have a black metal band you can't listening to other genres and you are not ''real'', you are no underground at all , It is completely nonese , very close mind people.

    First of all, I really appricate you in personal way. You've got your own style, you don't judge anybody and you have awesome lifestyle, and the most important thing: you let people live the life in their own way. But to note this video: I like to listen to many different genres, anything what sounds good in my ears. And I think the lyrics can be meaningful in many different ways. For example, most of the rap lyrics what made in 90's are telling about poverty, the bad state of black community, racism and so on. In some of metal songs there's a story about things what happend in history, for Example a power metal band called Sabaton from Sweden, are telling about the WW2, Vietnam war etc. Art is so subject thing and you can understand the lyircs how you want to. For me it's about one thing: the totality of songs. Hope you got my point and please, forgive me the mistakes in my text. My english is not so good. Have a nice summer!

    Very interesting topic for video.I have been countless times in the situation where i have to explain to a friend(who listens to pop,rap etc) why i like death/black metal bands and whats going on with the lyrics.Well tbh i dont care so much about the lyrics,i just like the music,especially in black metal for the dark atmosphere or death metal for the aggresity/brutality or the slow grimmy riffs.Thats what i always try to explain to those people.

  • @hipyhippo3829

    Rap is my number one genre. Ive only really been listening to metal for 3 years maybe? Idk but my friend showed me all these bands. Slipknot I knew 2 songs from them for a while but i wasnt hugely into it. But you know a7x especially since i play cod. So im relatively new to metal but still have a good understanding. Recently (past 3 months or so) Ive been into other bands like bring me the horizon and for the subject I'll talk about the early stages of them. I love it. Its crazy how my taste in music has changed soooo much. I used to hear screamo or metal and stuff with like high screams and shit i used to think "Yeah I wont ever get into this" well, that changed lol. But like pop music is to dance to or to party to or I guess some meaningful stuff. I listen to rap when Im tryna spit and just get into it. Rap is for lyrics. Metal, eh. I guess you could get into really rhymey and do some multi syllables in metal that would be cool😂 but metal is for the experience of the band. Obviously I feel most or at least the songs I listen to in metal there is a meaning in the song its just they dont do so much rhyming cause that doesnt matter. Ending rhymes is all. Especially if its like metalcore or deathcore then its just the vocals i look for I dont care what the song is. If theres a meaning yeah it makes the sense of the song better but its not particularly needed. By the way when I talk about rap like some rap is trash but you can still just turn up to but i 99% of the time listen to lyrical content stuff. Metal is where the 1% of me looks for meaning or lyrical content. Honestly i think I went of course but yeah you get it.

    great words. another thing people seem to not get is that there is more to the lyrics then what you hear, literature often has forms of symbolism in it and I think sometimes people take it to literally when they first hear the words before they think about it deeper.

This is a great example of how heavy music can have really awesome lyrics. The album is set out like a narrative with a beginning, middle and end and I really like the album as a whole. Mourning, unstoppable and the interlude song Karolena are a few of the stand outs in my opinion.
