I just quit my job and left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple cabins and structures from the timber on the land. I may have made a huge mistake as doing this at the start of Winter in late November may make general construction difficult if not impossible.
My first project is a 12' by 16' cabin using the BUTT AND PASS method with raw logs. It will include a sleeping loft and a steel roof. I will not be milling or saddle notching the logs, but chinking in the small gaps that do appear with the butt and pass method with raw logs. This method's main advantage is SPEED.
To all my viewers and subscribers, STRENGTH AND HONOUR! 🫡🤝⚡️🐺🌲

You need to place the big end of the logs together in the corners and then the small ends together, then in the next stack you alternate and put the big ends together over top of the smalls from the last stack. Ends up being level at the top and less shims

I absolutely love your videos ! The guts and couriage to take on such a project is amazing. Struggeling around in snow I can relate to here in Norway, we got 4 feet in 2 days 2 weeks ago so...As a carpenter, I would probably build the cabin in a more traditional way, but God, you are doing a hell of a job!! Regarding Sophie.....you`ll have to get in line....behind me. Keep it up buddy :o)

I like that we can see you figuring out new things every episode.
    This episode I noticed:
    - Your old tent is under a tree next to the cabin site for tool storage. (I think you did this last episode)
    - You moved the sawhorses closer to the cabin so peeled logs are easier to shift into position.
    - Nerd trivia for your passion for all things Roman. Roman Legionnaire's shields were made of plywood. It's far stronger for a given weight than any natural wood. And it resists being hacked from any angle because THERE IS NO GRAIN TO SPLIT once you have layers!
Looking forward to the next lesson to be shared.

Those 2x4 blocks are splitting 15:48 because of the size of the spike. You can drill through it with the 2x4 in place but the bit might grab it and spin the block, or pre drill them and line up with your spike.

@17:30 It is also important to point out there will be a significant degree of settling in all four of your walls, so the perceived gaps you see now at the time of construction will greatly be reduced by the time you get your wall height complete and begin putting on the roof. 👍👀

Don't hurt the spade bits feelings, it's doing the best it can. But yes, to be effective with it you gotta drill in, pull it out while spinning to clear the hole, go back in, drill further, pull back out while spinning over and over. The auger is the bees knees for timber framing.

Carpenter here! To stop dimensional wood from splitting like that you can get some 2-1/2 - 3" screws (go galvanized for exterior use) and send a couple across the grain of the block you cut. Then bore your hole through and then set your spike. The screws will stop the lumber from splitting on you. Hope this helps!

  • @josephforge4457
    @josephforge4457 8 месяцев назад +4

the reason your 2x4 is splitting is because the nails a MASSIVE and the wood that is being displaced has nowhere to go so it splits. to fix this you can pre drill a hole into the 2x4 and you wont have any more issues! also I absolutely love this series, you're an absolute machine and I respect the hell out of it. watching intently from AUS

I was thinking exactly this about squaring the top and bottoms with a chainsaw mill. Although height would be lost (or thicker tree trunks initially needed), I wonder if the thermal mass properties would remain?
It also occurred to me that as you go higher, things will slow. Are you thinking of of a pulley system.
A costing would be interesting. And it’d be better if you used metric measurements. Feet and inches are ok for the cabin details as it keeps simple but certainly for the temperatures, no one knows what 12 Fahrenheit is.

Really enjoy the channel, look forward to each video coming out. you're living the dream that many have and I'm impressed by the fact that your able to overcome the issues that pop up. I have a lot of construction experience, while I've been in a lot of log cabins. I've never built a log cabin. But from what I've seen you appear to only be spiking each log in three places. I'm a little worried that maybe you haven't considered spiking your logs down so that you can cut your doors and windows in based on where your spikes are going; since you want two spikes holding any one log on both ends. While it may be too late for where you place your door to do that, you may still have time for your windows. Keep up the great work, hope to see many more episodes to come!

The limbs, tops, and bark from peeling will all provide a source of heat while you work, plus you can place the batteries near the heat to keep them warm, and all this from cleaning up your waste. Next time you’re at the Home Depot look for a punch that has a hand guard. Not sure if they make a punch that way but I use a chisel at work that has a big blue hand guard to keep you from smashing your hand. I think you could use a punch to drive the spikes into the log and the hand guard is a nice grip. If they don’t make a punch that way you could probably just buy the chisel and cut the end off to make it a punch and that would give you a nice tool rather than an awkward rebar.

For more Roman history let me recommend Suetonius' 12 Caesars - an often saucy and gossip filled account of the period from the end of the Republic to Domitian, and biographies of emperors from Caesar onwards. A primary source on Roman history and a great read. Apols if you're already familiar with it.

Stay away from Beech trees. They leave a TON of ash. They burn ok, fairly hot, but you will have to clean a small (for a house) woodstove every day. A camp stove you might need to shut down and clean out 2, 3 times a day. Stick with just the outer screen for a apark arrestor. Give the pipe a decrnt tap every couple days and the soot will fall down the pipe into the stove and burn up. Hope these tips help.

Build a couple tripods out of tree trunks. 4" at the top should be fine. Get a couple chain falls and put up at the top. 1 near your log pile, 1 in the middle of the house. Can make your work vastly easier.

Loving these series, as well as that the haters seems to have vanished as James is superior to all of them, simply by not giving up, but showing all of us that if you have the will, interest, guts, then you learn and produce as you go. I just wishwd the episodes were like 1 hour long... And maybe consider a bird feeder, as the birds are getting used to you, James 😊

Nice video as always, for you next build please look into doing "lafting". And old norwegian way of building "stabbur". Way easier and tighter, no need to use a single nail.
Your still killing it doing it your own way, keep on!

You will need to build yourself a tripod with a come along wench for lifting the higher logs. Believe me when I say you don’t want to tear your shoulder apart. 6 surgeries later and it will never be the same.

you may wanna get a cold air intake for your stove.
because if it burns the fresh air has to come from the outside inside and it will actually cool your tent
if you run the air direct from the outside into your fire its much better

This series is awesome! Only trying to help here… I don’t think it’s the type of wood that’s causing those plugs to split it’s the size. Either pre drill them or hammer in your nails to the side of them.

Nice progress! Alternative to the rebar could be an inverted deep hex socket. As long as it fits in the countersink hole.

I meant to post on the last video but what about using a magnetic double head hammer to countersink your nail heads into the bore holes. You would have a handle to hold onto already attached to avoid accidentally missing the rebar and smashing your fingers. Or even a ball peen/pein hammer with a narrow enough head that fits right into the bore hole would provide a nice handle. You could strike against the bac of the hammer with your mini sledge. I'll put links to what I mean but I am not sure if youtube allows them.

James, you ABSOLUTELY MUST USE SAFETY GLASSES while hammering things like rebar punches, driving nails, etc. One piece of metal in the eye could take your vision forever! This I know because I once knew someone who lost an eye that way!

Hey, brother, love the videos. When you get a chance in your cleaning that window on your stove, grab some of the white sit. Put it with a little bit of water. And then start scrubbing the window it will all come off in one go!

I really really hope you get to see this, so you don’t have to keep buying those Coleman canisters, you can buy a propane refill adapter to hook up to a normal bbq propane tank, then you can swap out the big ones very cheaply!
