Rika's reaction is mine when I first saw Ryo in the anime. I hated him in his games and hated how Rika and Renamon got screwed over and turned into damsels when he got Biomerge.

Ryo was basically Chris Thorndyke from Sonic X or Zack the wannabe 5th turtle from the 80s tmnt show. They always have to upstage the actual main characters or be shoehorned into the plot in some way. In the games, he uses the original Digidestnied's partners, and due to Bandai shoehorning him into canon, he was Veemon's first Tamer.
