    I think this truck is so hated on, because deep down majority truck owners know this is all they truly need. They just can’t admit it, so they hate on it.

      @plmn93 3 года назад +24

      Nah, they hate it because it's ugly. Truck owners are pretty easy to please, just make it look like a truck. Honda for whatever reason has refused to do that, and these have been perennial sales losers because of that. Make it look like a truck, give it another inch or two of ground clearance and bed depth, put a truck interior back in it again like the first gen, give it an engine with more torque, and they'd have a winner in my opinion.

      @@plmn93 in my opinion I think that the hate is several things first is the construction of it its unibody and not body on frame second is that its fwd standard with awd option and third is that its ifs and irs with no leaf springs but in reality the ridgeline is more than enough for the average truck buyer but are worried that they are not "manly" if they do get one which is dumb

    Similar story: Worked for Honda dealer and now for a contractor to Honda Canada. I bought the original 2006 Ridgeline EX-L brand new and it currently has 251 000 kms with no issues other than regular maintenance over the years. ( on my second timing belt). One feature that I like on the original is the VTM-4 lock which allows you to lock the rear diff in L1 and L2. The new Ridgeline uses a torque vectoring system. Both are good but the original allows for a more hands on old school approach. Bed space in the new one is bigger, but it seems at the expense of rear seat room. What would be nice is bed height high enough to accommodate a large Coleman cooler with a tonneau cover. Safety (especially with the new headlights), ride quality and efficiency are all improved. The best thing about both Ridgelines is how the meet the actual needs of most daily pickup truck buyers.

    • @BlixemBlixem
      @BlixemBlixem 3 года назад +2

      your description of the VTM-4 lock is not totally accurate. It is actually locking the transfer clutch to the rear wheels. So just makes sure power is being transferred to the rear wheels from 0mph vs waiting for them to slip before transferring the power. Either way, yes it is a cool feature.

The one thing that we like better on the 2014 is the counsel and the and the shifter on the column, it gives you so much more room. That is something that Honda needs to go back to. I have owed several trucks in my 63 years and this Honda is the best truck yet.

    The ridgeline is the literal perfect vehicle for most suburban pickup truck owners. Heres the checklist of things it has that most midsize and half ton buyers want. AWD, has a bed, can tow a boat and other toys, can seat 5, gets good fuel economy, naturally aspirated engine loaded with utility, smooth ride. 0 reason for this to sell poorly other than the truck culture in the US. If Ram came out with a pickup tomorrow based on the dodge durango (which wouldn't be a bad thing) or if chevy re launched the avalanche based on the traverse, or ford launched a pickup based on the edge or explorer, they would be smash hits. Just people hear that honda's only pickup is a minivan with a bed and they just laugh it off, if honda had a BOF half ton above the ridgeline, the conversation would be completely different.

  • @neitzp
    @neitzp 3 года назад +52

    For your brother: The 2006-2008 only had six bed tiedowns. When Honda did the 2009 model year refresh they added two additional tiedowns to the top-rear of the bed giving you a total of eight. Also, with the 2009 refresh Honda got rid of the four-pin tailor connector leaving you only the seven-pin. Additionally, the dual-mode tailgate in the down position is rated to handle 136kg of dynamic load before that cable fails. Lastly, the first generation Ridgeline has enough space for a full-size spare in the in-bed trunk while the second generation can only fit a donut.

I couldn’t have been happier with that outcome because it disintegrated underneath and was going to be a total loss.
      I just picked up a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7L. It seems to work really well but it’s nothing like the Ridgeline. I think I’ll see if I can trade this for another Ridgeline later this year when I get it looking really good. We’ll see. 👍😇

The console that separates the leg room is stupid. As was getting rid of that little tray over the glove box. I disagree with this guy's assessment of the trunk. I have golf clubs and the new one (2019 vs 2012) is bigger. The other thing about the new interior is that there is no 12V power source in the back seat, also stupid. The air filters on the new one, both motor and cabin, are much easier to change out. I hated the body style when I got my 2007. I called it the storm trooper; it was white. Love my 06 Ridgeline (1st year of production). It's got 226,000 miles and counting ... runs great with plenty of power and smooth ride. FYI, mine had the same back seat lock bar issue that I fixed by replacing a pulley at the floorboard that controls that locking mechanism - about a 30-minute fix.

    2006 (first year) Ridgeline won Motor Trend TRUCK OF THE YEAR!! And the other truck makers/buyers were sooo mad. They were like, that's not a "real" truck. Well..your Mighty Motor Trend says it is, and it's the best, so there. My favourite vehicle ever!

    I had an '08 and now a 2021. I loved that '08 so much and at 110K miles it looked/drove brand new. The Gen 2 is definitely improved, as it should be. The only thing I didn't care for on the Gen 1 was how easily the seats would stain. They were very durable but anything would stain them and impossible to clean. Amazing truck though.

    My dream truck is a Tundra but I will probably never need to tow to it’s capacity and will have a hard time justifying a 50k truck.
    I own a 2012 Ridgeline that I love. Versatile, awd, has a trunk(only truck to), tows my boat and a 17’ cargo trailer.
    I, just like others, will be driving this thing until it blows up and at 85k miles it will be a while before that happens.
    It gets treated more like a truck than 50% of trucks I see on the road here in FL.

    As a fourteen-plus Honda tech (1984-1998) yeah, we come up with "deals" that'll make the general public swoon with jealousy . We bought a new 97 passport to tow our new Reinell 18.5 ft. boat. By the time I was done, I had a factory "Bull-bar" up front that was going to be thrown out because it was warranteed for being scratched up out of the box..I installed the biggest B&M trans-cooler...a pair of correctly sized driving lights flanking the receiver hitch with a dual-pole dual-throw center-off switch on one of the blanks on the dash, An "off", an On tied into the back-up lights, & a "remote" to illuminate the boat for any reason. Of course all wired up correctly with fuses & relays.

    I still love my old '06 Ridgeline. I always loved it's styling and still think it looks cool. It's tough as hell, yet It continues to be super smooth and comfortable and ultra reliable and runs on regular fuel as apposed to premium. I've never been want for more power. Fantastic distance highway cruiser even when loaded down with a fridge, stove,chairs and more. The traction in snow is outstanding!
    Modes? We don't need no stinkin' modes!
    Also don't want or need a fake divider line between the body and the box. Keep it real, Honda, the uni-body construction is strong.

Have also hauled a bed full of sandstone, probably too much, but it had no problems navigating hills a curves with that load. I hope to keep it for years to come. It only has one dime size spot of rust on rear wheel well and we live in north East Ohio. I will but another one when I need to replace this one. I’ve got a 2008 Ridgeline AWD. 130k, and frankly it drives like new. It’s truly fun to drive these, as the suspension was well built and the steering is dead on tight. You think you’re driving a car with rack and pinion steering. I’d not trade the Ridgeline for anything. A new one would simply be another car bill, which I don’t need to be making $650 month car payments!!! Good job Honda!!

    The 2008 had four tie downs by the tail gate.the top two were removed for that tonneau cover. I like the bed lights in 2010 because the two lights near the tail gate can shine into the trunk when you have the trunk open. The new 2020, the bed lights are just two set in the mid position of the bed. When open the trunk you don’t have lights shining into the trunk.

      I hope they don't put lockers. I hope they stay with the way the Ridgeline is especially with the IVTM4 AWD. However, they should make another body on frame truck with a v8, lockers, solid axles, and leafsprings or just get yourself a F150.

    • @robc233
      @robc233 3 года назад +1

      If they had increased the tow rating, I would probably be driving one right now. I had a 1st gen and loved it, but I was constantly pushing the tow limits. What Honda needs to realize is that as things progress, our trailers gets larger and heavier. Back in 95, a F350 could tow 10,000 lbs, which is about the same as a F150 today. 5,000 lbs for a midsize might have been acceptable in 2008, but in 2020, a push to 6,000 lbs would open the door to so many more boats and RV’s, not to mention how close of an eye you have to keep out for loading the trailers. FYI, I now drive a F150.

    When the original came out it was revolutionary!! Being a traditional truck guy, I hated that I loved many of the things nobody else thought of... (fancy tailgate, in bed storage that was lockable etc). The new one seems to have a very loyal following but being a 70s and 80s kid, I would say the new one reminds me of an El Camino instead of a truck. I think they missed the mark on towing capacity. The new one is very comfortable and rides nice though. I guess everything is about balance and trade offs etc. Tx for the video!

    • @squidusn71
      @squidusn71 3 года назад +1

      It's not loyalty. Many owners were loyal to other brands or were prior body on frame truck owners before they bought their Ridgeline. It's more of a maturity decision...need vs want. The dual action tailgate and in-bed trunk are not designed to be fancy but for practicality in mind.

    I’m so glad that y’all did an honest comparison of the two. There’s too much marketing spin and ungrounded haterade out there about this vehicle.
    As a former Honda dealer employee who also sold Nissan and Fords at one point, I can say that the people who like the Ridgeline are cult like. The Ridgeline, Element, Fit, and S2000 seem to be the best examples of a modern day manufacturer taking some big risks to be innovative instead of just keeping with the same boring car design. I know that that’s a weird thing to say about the company known for the boring Civic and Accord from before the 2017-2018 updates, but name me another major international car maker that tried to redesign vehicles to meet most people’s needs while having some unique engineering to stand out. There’re the Nissan Cube maybe, but most makers keep the stays quo outside of super cars and their race car required homologations.
    I hope they keep the Ridgeline around even if in small sales numbers to show how good Honda can be when they dare to rethink what people actually need out of their daily driver.
