I successfully replaced the head gasket on my '94 Metro. This video series basically made the whole thing possible. I love my Geo and it's so nice to drive it again!
If you have a Geo Metro and are looking to do some engine work, do yourself a favor and PAY ATTENTION TO THIS VIDEO SERIES!!! With the help of the knowledge of the GeoMetroForum and these videos, I was able to do the top and bottom end of this engine in roughly 3 days. Its actually quite easy. Thanks again Imperial Beach Dad!! I'll be getting the 3tech performance head next year when my younger son turns 3 so he can help me do the job as your little helpers did. Cheers.
John that's so awesome man!!! Great job taking matters into your own hands and getting it done! Thanks for the positive review, I'm so glad this helped you :D
Great video set MRH. Very instructional and I realize it took a step in faith to do it. Good to see that you have Faith and used prayer to accomplish the mission. GB jc PS The Lord blessed you with some great helpers too.
Thanks for the encouragement! I love including my helpers in all my projects. I was blessed with a handy Dad who let me help when I was little, it's one of the big reasons I'm not afraid to try new things and get my hands dirty today, so it's important to me to include them. This really was a very satisfying project, partly because I have a working car and partly because it was like solving a difficult puzzle. I'm actually thinking about finding a project car on CL that needs work just to see if I can do it
I had a 91 Hatch, 5spd, 1000cc. Got 53mpg on trips to buffalo on the highway. Someone threw a stone through the back window. Sold it to my neighbor where he cut the back 1/4 of the roof off and threw chain on the front. Uses it to this day to haul firewood off his land. I miss them. I had a 90 Storm (1st place Broome country Fair demo derby) and 91 Storm GSI (ended up and dirt track oval car) at Thunder mtn Speedway Lisle NY. Most people dont know but the Metro was the same Chassis as the Suzuki Swift. Offer in a much larger engine and AWD. Google 91 Suzuki Swift Hill Climb. Youll notice they are the same car.
Wow just came across your channel because i came in recent possession of a geo metro myself and your very casual, and straight forward with your info and enjoyable to watch! I;m hoping i can soak in what i can learn from you and enjoy it in the process. Sub from me.
After removing the Timing belt and it shifting to the right several teeth, like a couple videos show, I cannot seem to find the correct marks (Replaced by "E" on top sprocket) for 2001 1.3 4cyc.
Old video, but I have an older car, lol My car is pushing white smoke on startup, so might be head gasket related. Looking to do some updates to my 87 it's older but the basics of engine repair should apply, cheers.
How do you know if it is the lower part or the upper part? You mention if it is in the upper , the oil may be discolored, and with the lower it may not be?
97 Geo metro top dead center. The crank supposed to point at the zero on timing cover, while the distributor rotor should point to the number 1 spark plug point. Well my 4cylinder 1.3 crank pulley is pointing at the 20. That's the only way that the distributor rotor will point dead on the number one cylinder point. If I point the crank pulley to the number zero on the timing cover, The distributor rotor goes past the number 1 point mark that I made on the distributor. About a nickles thickness. Why is this happening? Could my timing belt have jumped a tooth on the cam or crank? My car starts but takes multiple tries for about ten minutes. Only stays on after it warms up. 😭😭😭 please help. I need top dead center before I can change my water pump and timing belt. Last thing. I got the drive belt off and the water pump pulley off and the crank pulley off but the crank pulley can't come off, due to it being double thick for 2 belts. 😞😞😞 I don't have a chain wrench. And I don't wanna losen the motor mount to drop the engine to get the pulley off. I need to get the crank center bolt out. Then the pulley will have clearance to be removed. I live in my Geo and I'm on fixed income and I don't know how long I can stay in this McDonald's parking lot. Please pray and help me with any information you can. Thanks. Ps. I'm having trouble finding a idle air control valve for the 97 metro 1.3 Lsi.😢
love your username dude! The Bible is literally healing me right now! Sorry about your metro bro. I only know the 1.0 liter, that 4th hamster wheel changes everything. Check out the geo metro forums.
Help I did everything but when it came to the timing I have it so far advance that it's won't go anymore. Still running rough. And has no power coming from a dead stop please help
shoot, the amazon seller is gone. But the description of the item from 2015 was: Shepherd Auto Parts 1 Row w/o EOC w/ TOC High Performance All Alumium Engine Radiator. I suspect that I got there by searching universal aluminum radiator and looking for one that was a similar size, but I honestly don't remember. If you find a good one, post a link and help the next dude out. Good luck homie!
Awesome Julian Pelletier, good to meet another local and metro owner. They're great little cars, so good at just being exactly what they were designed to be, and sooo affordable too :)
Can you give the name/brand of the head gasket you used? I am in the process of tearing down the engine for a head gasket replacement. How has the car been driving?
+Tim Kasey I got it on Ebay. search geo metro high performance no blow head gasket and its the first one that comes up. It's dark grey with blue lines and runs about $45. The car runs awesome! Put a few thousand miles on it since the rebuild and it's stronger than ever. Check out the other videos in the series, I put out a new one every Monday and I think they will be really helpful to you.
MatthewRobertHenry You've been a great help! I'm probably your biggest fan! Car repairs of this magnitude are scary, and any video tutorials are so beneficial. I can proceed with confidence, knowing what to do next. I did three important engine checks before I began: 1) cooling system pressure test; 2) compression test; 3) oil pressure test. All tests revealed where the water leak was coming from, and that I only need to replace the head gasket, and nothing else (indicated by compression & oil pressure tests).
That's great news, I'm really glad these videos are helpful. I made them because I wished they existed when I needed to to do this project so I'm really happy you found them. How many miles are on your engine?
MatthewRobertHenry 180k+, The head is loose, the timing belt is tied up and back (don't need to remove it... ha ha). Can you give me the links to who you purchased the modified head from? Hey, my center 4 bolts were really loose compared to the outer four. I wonder if that's because the head is warped, or because the previous instal didn't clean the threads? I will soon find out. I need to go do something else for now, but all I need to do (when I get back) is remove the head and intake manifold. The head came loose when I was pounding on the valve cover with a piece of wood, and/or when removing the timing sprocket bolt, how odd... well I didn't struggle with getting the head loose.
+Tim Kasey I got the head from mike at 3tech, his email is 3tech(at)teamswift.net I have since found jeffsgeometro(dot)com who also has 2 custom head options. Sounds like your head may in fact be warped. If you plan to reuse it for sure send it to a machine shop to find out if it's warped and even though you had good compression I would really consider getting stainless steel valves installed, they aren't that expensive and are known to fail so it may be worth your time to avoid having to do this all over again later. The stock head bolts are single use only, it's possible the previous owner reused them and they got loose or stretched allowing the head to warp. I would replace those as well, I think it was only $20 for hardened reusable ones through 3tech. Sounds like you are making good progress, hope it turns out awesome for you!
the plastic end tanks failed or the seal between the tank and radiator core failed the cooling system got to the point , to where it could no longer hold pressure and keep the coolant below the boiling point.... coolant is a lubricant antifreeze and increases the boiling point of water,,,, the cooling system in the metro is a sealed system and needs to be under pressure too raise the boiling point of water so the radiator failing did kill the engine

Just found about to watch entire series!
Hope it helps you out Nick!

Thanks for the great video! Geo metros are the ultimate car for DIY repair!
Haha, no doubt! 25% less cylinders! And they are truly the ultimate cars for everything. My roof rack can hold 4'x8' sheets of plywood!

Those are awesome stories!!! We would get along just fine!

GEO Metro- carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/2136/1541/5338270092_large.jpg
This was the reason the Metro had a transmission bay. Because the Swift was offered in AWD and they used the same chassis.

Oh shoots, yeah sounds like it. You might try some head gasket in a can. Sometimes it works I guess
@@MatthewRobertHenry Head gasket in a can sounds like a quick and easy fix (if it works), thanks

Love the video. Looking to buy 91-92-93 Metro Lsi
Do it!
Can you please post the link for the radiator you bought online?

+Breaking Bolts Thanks man, I like that username!
Mine just blew the head today 😢
Mine is leaking into the exhaust and not into the oil so that's a plus.
you talk down to people in fact were actually on the ground!
🤷🏼♂️
I'm rive minutes in and he hasn't told me shit about the metro
the radiator was faulty for some time ,,, that is what killed the metro
over loading it did not blow a head gasket
+Mark Ryan i like the sound of this, how did you come to that conclusion, the thermostat?
the plastic end tanks failed or the seal between the tank and radiator core failed
the cooling system got to the point , to where it could no longer hold pressure and keep the coolant below the boiling point.... coolant is a lubricant antifreeze and increases the boiling point of water,,,, the cooling system in the metro is a sealed system and needs to be under pressure too raise the boiling point of water
so the radiator failing did kill the engine
👍👍🐒
