For contemporary works, I think the Griffin and Sabine series written and illustrated by artist Nick Bantock needs to be recognized. His short books, little works of art known as “artists books” reveal a story with actual letters that the reader pulls from envelopes attached to the pages. It’s a charming, continuing story over several volumes that pulls the reader into these imaginary lives. There are fantastical, imaginative beasts and birds and landscapes, along with unique stamps bringing the story to life along with the written letters. Published by Chronicle Books.
My favourite epistolary novel is Mary Ann Shaffer's "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society", which is an account of life on the island during World War II, where citizens lived under German occupation for a while. It was also made into a movie in 2018.
Thanks so much for sharing this example, Michael! We haven't read this work, but it sounds fascinating. Does the novel include a number of different writers, or is it restricted to a small number of people? And do their impressions of occupation match up with one another, or do they differ in ways that make greater demands upon readers to try to sort of opinion / perspective and reality?
@@SWLF That is certainly part of what makes epistolary fiction so engaging, isn't it? There are several main characters who write letters back and forth from Guernsey to London, mostly, but letters of minor characters are also added in. We certainly get an anti-German sentiment from the text, but there is also an undercurrent of a romance that eventually...well, I won't tell you.
Epistolary novel term refers to work of fiction that are written in form of letters or other documents. my favourite example is probably ella minnow pea... because i think the epistolary form is so much a part of the concept that it's difficult to imagine how it could be told any other way
Interesting question, @DejanOfRadic ! The first example would definitely be epistolary, as a diary is essentially a letter to one's future self. A good example of this (though it is INCREDIBLY bawdy) is Gary Shteyngart's novel Super Sad True Love Story. Fictionalized memoirs are less so. The Great Gatsby, for example, is structured like a memoir. The fictional narrator begins the novel with the lines "In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. 'Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,' he told me, 'just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.' " That novel pretends to be a memoir of sorts, but wouldn't be considered an epistolary novel. Hope that helps!
My favourite is "We need to talk about Kevin!" Great video!
Great example (and a brutal read) tehminakazi6813! Thanks for keeping the conversation going!

Would a novel structured as diary entries or as a fictional memoire be considered epistolary?
