Only reason I attack the crown is if I some how have more troops than them at the moment and usually with them being a crown and someone else is attacking and there already low on troops normally a bunch of other people join me and we take them down. Other reason is if someone I spawned next to is pretty large (also been cool the entire time) but the crown is only somewhat bigger and between the two of us we attack.
I usually always win when somebody has way more land or I'm attacking the king no one else is joining in so I have to do it myself and usually I'll win the thing I usually do is that if I can't budge him and I'm in the five digits I'll send

I don't know if it is better but I usually full send to initially claim free space because I know the expansion is larger and faster moving but I don't know if I am hurting myself doing it but it is a thought.
full sending at the start is a bad idea sometimes it could be beneficial but from experience when you start having neighbors youll quickly be the weakest nation so I recommend just not going above 50% of your troops
