Great reaction. This video was released a month or two ago to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their first album being released - 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first song on that first album.
They had not played it live since 2017 because it is an intro song and they are introducing themselves by name, but they couldn't use it with just two official members and the original third member Yuimetal didn't appear at all after October 2017 and officially announced she was leaving the band in October 2018.
This performance was on 2nd April 2023 - the first concert with Momometal as an official member, so 'BABYMETAL Death' was back ... I don't know if you heard the crowd cheer particularly loudly when she introduced herself as "Momometal desu".
The whole song is based on a pun. The English word death sounds to a Japanese speaker like the Japanese word desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp.
Desu means to be - as in I am, we are, it is etc. Basically the lyrics for this song are: "B_A_B_Y_M_E_T_A_L" ... "I am Su-metal", "I am Moametal", "I am Momometal" "We are BABYMETAL" ... "Death Death Death Death Death Death Death Death".
You must have been asked do a reaction to the 'Legend 1997' performance where they were celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday in December 2013 ... if you weren't I'll ask now.
Being an introduction song they would normally play it right at the start of the concerts (it is a great way to get the crowd hyped and joining in straight away), but that was one of the special occasions where they played it later in the show - for that one it was the finale.
Oh, Su-metal mimed that scream - that sort of guttural scream is one of the few things she does not do and doing that in this song one of the few times you will see her pretend.

Japanese don't really care about religion, and being offensive about it, so that's no big deal for them
Look at the - Babymetal Death 1997 Apocalypse - version, which is way more darker in term of imagery

Black Sabbath, Metallica, Rammstein and probably tons of other heavy musicians and artists have been doing the same thing for the past five decades.
So people should not be surprised about the trend that we have with the heavy metal genre. This dark imagery represents nothing but merely a display for the band's performance and music.
I'm a Muslim and we tend to get offended a lot more from music in general but this doesn't bother me at all. It's how it should be.
      Metal rocks 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

    Good one, thanks!
Although "BABYMETAL Death" was (and is again) their usual opening song, this time it was more a sort of encore since it was a special occasion: the first time they performed as a trio since 2017. The thing is that they actually introducing themselves in the lyrics: "SU-METAL desu, MOAMETAL desu, MOMOMETAL desu, BABYMETAL desu" ("desu" means I am or we are). Of course mispronouncing "desu" as "death" you have a really cool and metal way to introduce yourself. 😁
The crowd is not choreographed, by the way. They are just... crazy kitsunes. 🤣

    Welcome back to the Foxhole.
They're celebrating 10 years anniversary of the first album and along with this they released a Gimme Chocolate!! challenge on social media. They've been playing this blaster intro during the World Tour 2023/2024.
This was the first "Babymetal Death" version with MomoMetal as an official member and it was a come back song after December 2017 iirc. They did Babymetal Death Shin Version at Budokan 2021 but it's a way different version.
Btw don't miss out the live version at Legend 1997 in 2013, it's even more shocking and impactful with the theatrical performance and one of the rare time they used it as an ender.✝️
Anyway always remember that we are -NotACult- 🦊🤘💀

Babymetal Death is their introduction song that opens their live shows and also opens the first album. It's main role is to get everyone hyped up for the rest of the show, which is part of the reason it doesn't really have a lot of lyrics.
It is an introduction in the literal sense as well, as they are spelling out the name of the band "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L DESU!" and introducing themselves "Su-metal desu" (I am Su-metal), "Moametal desu" (I am Moametal), and "Momometal desu" (I am Momometal). "Desu" means "I am" or "We are" in this particular context. However there is also a play on words going on because while they are saying "desu", they are also saying "death". Because Japanese does not have dental fricatives (sounds that use your teeth like "th"), Japanese people have great difficulty saying words with "th" in them, so they often unconsciously substitute "su" in place of it, so "death" ends up sounding like "desu". So when they are saying "Babymetal desu" they are also saying "Babymetal Death", which is pretty metal.
I was at this performance, so I was there in the crowd shouting "Death! Death! Death!" and doing the actions. All the hardcore fans know the chants and the movements that we are supposed to do for each song. When you go to a Babymetal show, you are part of the performance, and the girls really feed of the energy and engagement of the crowd.

It was the first concert with MOMOMETAL as the full, official BM member. That was also the reason why the crowd went crazy when she had her part sang "MOMOMETAL desu", which somewhat served as her introduction to the fans.

This will seem heretical to some fans but for me this has become my personal favorite version of "Death". Babymetal Death at Budokan 2014 is the classic and is astounding on all counts. Particularly great because of Mikio's fanatical presence on the stage. But this version is just so concise, tight and laser beam focused. Great job as always guys, keep them coming.

Hell yeah guys, great reaction! However, this is the "PG" version of this song 🤣. They did a much more over the top version from "Legend 1997" concert in Dec 2013.
"Desu" (silent 'u') = "I am / We are", "Babymetal Desu" = "We Are Babymetal", etc. The whole song is an intro, both to their 1st album, and also commonly used as a show opener. Here, it's the intro to this show's encore. Babymetal Desu is of course, a pun. Say "Desu" with a lisp, and it sounds like "Death". Now the gals had a cute and metal way of introducing themselves.
Also, for context, when Momoka said "Momometal Desu", and the crowd lost their shit: This was the first time this song has been played live since original 3rd member, Yui's departure in 2017/2018. Momoko was announced as the official 3rd member the night before, so everyone went nuts during "Momometal Desu"!
    Other suggestions:
*BABYMETAL DEATH (Legend 1997 concert):* Be sure to check out how #notacult started, on your own or as a reaction! This was the closer for Su-metal's 16th birthday show in Dec 2013.
*Headbanger (Legend MM):* You've done the music video, but check out the live, and in this case, Momoko's 21st birthday special. Affectionally known as "Momobanger", this was performed ~1 month ago, on her last night being 20, Momometal takes lead and does something live vocally that is a first for Babymetal!

Babymetal Death is always fantastic. And this was a good one. Have not seen it before. There are several other that are just as good.
The one that really stands out though is the one at Legend 1997 in 2013. It is special. See it even if you do not plan to react to it.
As several already have said, this is really only an introduction where they say their names and also the bands name. That is really all it is.
But, of course, why not do it in an epic way? In the Legend 1997 there is also the added lore that Su became a metal goddess.

  • @MacTaipan
    @MacTaipan 3 месяца назад +6

Since the others seem to be late, let me do the honors this time:
One of the very cool facts about this song is that it's literally an introduction. In Japanese, the word "desu" is the copula, "to be". As such, it's also used in introductions. And since there's no grammatical number in Japanese, when the girls say "Su-metal desu, Moametal desu, Momometal desu, BABYMETAL desu", it means very literally "I'm Su-metal, I'm Moametal, I'm Momometal, we are BABYMETAL". The u at the end of "desu" is almost silent in "high" Japanese, so it sounds more like "des", which happens to be almost identical to the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "death".
The result is a pretty Metal Japanese introduction, perfect for an oping song.
At the "Legend 1997" show, they played an extended version of this at the end of the show to mark Su's transcension from a mere mortal to the Metal Goddess. It's worth watching, even after having watched this one already.

👍For those who say BABYMETAL is not metal, I present you with BABYMETAL Death.😉
OTFGK, but an interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity:
Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase.
Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL.
The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show.

No, this is no new song. They played it the last time in 2017. This is zheir default opener, but it was composed for three girls, so they could only make it their new Standard Opener when Momo was no öonger an avenger but a fullfledged babymetal. The reason for this song is, they were taught to use a stage persona, they play a role on stage and this role helps them to always stay in character. But it normally takes time to get into their persona and to drop this persona after they have left the stage. Since Momo is their new member , this title is back in their setlists as the default opener.

#notacult, You are forgetting that they are from Japan I can guarantee to you they know less about Christianity than we Europeans do.
Itherwise there would have been problems when they crucified Su at her 16th birthday. Interesting things to do on your birthday: Oh I was crucified in front of 20.000 Fans... It was obvious that in this Show one crazy idea followed the next Giant Statue like Metallica check, neck bracelez like X-Japan due to too much headbanging check. But at least someone stayed in control. You have a small girl that is still in Puberty on stage and she has to close her eyes to stay in character, while she can't hear anything due to the noise level and you must prevent this child to go into panic, so she had to know who was touching her when and why, and she must be in complete control, so her hands are only lying on the cross.
