Japan's new whaling mother ship arrived in Tokyo on May 23, 2024, ahead of its maiden hunting expedition off the nation’s northeast coast. The Kangei Maru will process and store whales caught by a fleet of smaller vessels. Japan's first domestically produced mother ship in over 70 years has faced a wave of criticism. Animal rights activists say that since whales live for a long time and reproduce slowly, they are not sustainable as a food source.

Absolute disgrace Japan , there is no reason to take these wonderful beings from their family groups . We are only just scratching the surface when discovering the intelligence of whales . But what small amount we do know , we know they are gentle , intelligent , compassionate and express emotions . Japan can you not take a leaf out of their book and show some humanity here. You do not need Whale meat , and how can you ingest each mouthful knowing what pain and suffering this being died in , let alone the grief and heartbreak left behind as the pod come to terms with loosing a family member . Young Japanese are loosing the appetite for this trade , which, at the end of the day, is aimed at high end older customers. It’s time to listen and change. The argument is that the fishing industry will go bankrupt , well how about using the knowledge of this industry to set up whale watching and sponsored projects and create a world class conservation area , you will earn much more money that way . The ocean is not our birthright to do with as we want , we destroy it at our peril .

Whenever I studied about the whaling industry in college, including talking to people who have actually eaten whale meat, there was nothing positive. It tastes bad according to everyone I've talked to, the average Japanese person doesn't even like it.
The ONLY thing they can say is "preserving our traditional food" is the same argument dog meat enthusiasts use in Korea.
The industry is already dying. Building an expensive ship to process something people don't even like eating is a waste of money. It isn't going to increase demand, it is just something to make people talk about. Which is why I'm wondering if it was a vanity project for that company, money laundering, or a shady business deal.
