I think the Russia plot line was good, but it could have been waaaaayyyyy condensed. I also disagree with your take on 001. Eleven removed the blocker from his neck and he went bananas. That tells me that Papa thought he could control him with that. Keeping him around as an orderly to keep a close eye on him while trying to recreate his powers seems perfectly logical to me, especially with Papa's ego being what it is. I'm also willing to bet that he waited so long to start killing again because he was scared of El. Once he realised she didn't have her powers anymore, he saw that as his chance. Although you are correct in saying episode 4 was a masterpiece. Seriously one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in television. Threatening to top finding the basement in AOT for me personally. My heart was pounding that entire time.
I had exactly the same opinion for the Russia storyline and I was rly bummed cuz Hopper is one of my favourite characters and his fatherly relationship with El was one of my favourite bits of season 2. On another note I wish they would do more with Will's connection to the upside-down instead of deciding that if they give him a gay storyline they can't be more nuanced with his character :/ But I mean overall I really enjoyed a lot of this season and I enjoyed your commentary on it :)
