    they sound more or less the same only the EHX is one hell of alot cheaper not to mention its by the people who invented the damn pedal in the first place

      Although for the many years that EHX weren’t making a green Russian Wren and cuff picked up the slack. Then when the tall font is selling fantastic EHX reintroduce the same pedal.

      The EHX one is great for sure, but the Wren and Cuff is doing something different. For what it's worth it's trying to be an accurate recreation of some early tall font russian bm's. I recently watched an interview/demo Matt from Wren and Cuff did with 60 cycle hum and he likes the EHX version more for certain reasons, but despite them both being a reissue they are trying to achieve slightly different things. The wren and cuff one actually isn't as loud and doesn't have as much gain as the EHX reissue. To a lot of people that's just not gonna be a desirable choice, nor worth the money, but to some people who really want an accurate recreation, not just in official parts values, but in sound of the original, along with all it's "faults", the wren and cuff is a way of doing a version of the tall font before EHX came out with their reissues.
      They are both awesome pedals, and the EHX one is gonna be way more accessible to most people, as well as being really close to the original too, but the Wren and Cuff is a cool option for people who want what it's offering. Like other people have pointed out too, the W&C version is going to last forever, and if it doesn't they offer a lifetime warranty on ever pedal they sell. Also, I don't see why who originally made it matters, the EHX who made the tall front is quite a different company then what it was when it was manufacturing the sovtek pedals.
      I point all this out because I see people knocking on Wren and Cuff for the amazing recreations of many different and nuanced muff pedals that EHX simply isn't likely to ever do and there is nothing wrong with that. EHX obviously tries to recreate things as accurately as they can and at and affordable price, but it doesn't make sense for them to try and mass manufacture a couple different versions of, for instance, the ram's head big muff circuit that mostly only the really huge Muff nerds are going to want. Maybe they will, but it makes less sense for a company that's going to sell ten times as many copies of a pedal version compared to Wren and Cuff. They both are awesome companies who are doing rad things pedal wise, I especially love what Wren and Cuff have done with their different big muff offerings, but they are really quite different in what they are doing.

    Just to clarify a couple things... as much as I appreciate some of you saying the buffer issue makes the comparison inaccurate, you are NOT correct. Muffs in general (and the tall Font) are just fine with or without a buffer in front or after them. So that is a non-issue either way.
    The Tall Font has way LESS distortion and output than pretty much any muff style pedal out there. You can see the reasons for this on our site. So if you're after gobs of gain and output, the Tall Font is probably not for you.
    Thx

      I noticed the Box of War seems similar to the Tall Font (but with a TON of output volume and seemingly more extreme lows and (potentially fizzy highs). Are they related? Can you do a Tall Font with more output volume (or can it at least get to unity)? Thanks!

  • @GingerChristmas
    @GingerChristmas 7 лет назад +33

    For reference, the Tall Font Russian version of the Big Muff uses the same circuit design as the "Civil War" Big Muff that precedes the Green Russian circuit. When you think of a Green Russian Big Muff tone you're thinking of the BUBBLE font version and NOT the Tall font version. I wanted to make this clear that if W&C know this same difference then the two pedals are based off different versions of the Big Muff Pi circuit.

    All these comments about pedal order don’t really understand that the Big Muff circuit is incredibly forgiving about pedal order. It’s not like a Fuzz Face, Octavio, or Tone Bender. Put it almost anywhere in the chain and it’ll take it like a champ. Also, the EHX is true bypass, making order even more irrelevant. Whichever one you like, order is not a factor is this shoot out.

      Wren and Cuff was choked on that buffer in the big muff though. the new EHX is absolutely fantastic for the money but of course the Wren and Cuff is going to sound choked and unable to breathe. its a rather sensitive pedal that cant handle a buffer infront of it

    • @chrishepburn1503

      Pierre Sauve that's what I was thinking. Not that fair of a comparison if their is a buffer In front of it

    • @cyrfung

      The EHX is true bypass according to them. Do you know something else?

    • @cyrfung
      @cyrfung 7 лет назад +1

      SuomiPerkele, old Klons are buffered bypass, KTR are optionally true bypass. OP said Russian green muff is buffered bypass but it is true bypass.
      A buffer is normally useful in your pedal board because long cable run would kill your high frequencies. But some fuzz pedals don’t like it or need special configurations, which is also not the case for muff-style circuits as far as I know.

    • @jimtroeltsch5998
      @jimtroeltsch5998 4 года назад +1

      According to Matt from Wren and Cuff the EHX absolutely has more volume and gain on tap then the W&C tall font pedal. The W&C is a more accurate recreation of the original in that sense, for what it's worth. Both are amazing pedals.

    I have the green Russian reissue from EHX and opening up that pedal to put in a battery made me laugh. Cool easter egg for stoner / doom fans. As a pedal it works great on both bass and guitar. Not hard to get a great sound with the 3 knobs and this thing takes booosts & drives very well. I use it so much, the value is almost comical.

    Im a bassist that plays a 90s russian muff and my friend had the wren and cuff - the wren crushed the EHX with how much sonic space it provided. Sure, i got the russian muff for a steal and it sounds good, but if i had the chance to find a Wren and Cuff at the right price it'd be a no brainer.

  • @michaeloakley

    I had an EHX reissue for a little bit. It didn’t really work well for me in a live band setting and the foot switch stopped working after 6 months (not the first EHX pedal this has happened with me). I then bought a few black Russian Big Muffs which I preferred over the reissue. I finally got an original green Russian BM and it was everything I wanted it to be. However, I decided it should be more of a studio pedal than a gigging pedal due to its value and fragile components. So, I needed a replacement for shows, and I watched this video a lot. I asked myself, do I roll the dice on buying the EHX reissue again and get a pedal that might stop working in a few months? Or, do I spend more money on a reputable, small pedal maker? Ultimately, I chose the W&C and am very happy with it. The W&C sounds the closest to my original green Russian, more than the reissue and the black Muffs I have.
    On a side note; this video doesn’t do the W&C justice. These pedals sound almost the same if you are playing mostly single note, blues licks. However, the real differences become apparent when playing full chords with the strings’ harmonics interacting; the differences are even more apparent with a band. The W&C is just better in these scenarios.

      @CaptAnderton 7 лет назад +53

      I thought about that, but I have a vested interest in selling the guitars, so inevitably my opinion will be seen as biased! You'd need to come & work here to see just how few out of the 1000's of Gibson/Epi guitars we receive get returned with quality issues. You'd have to see just how few guitars actually come back with neck breaks. You'd have to get familiar with a range of guitars that goes from £89 for a basic Epiphone, through to £10,000 for a limited edition, signed artist model (with absolutely every price point in between covered). You'd have to decide for yourself whether or not an all American made range of guitars starting from £799 is good value or not (I don't see any other American brands starting from £799). Then you can begin to form your own opinion.
      You can read a million opinions online about Gibson that may shape your own opinion about them - in my experience you have try & filter the BS from the truth (next to impossible on the internet!). So I think I'll just keep going selling more Gibson & Epiphone guitars than any other brand we carry (including Fender), and let everyone else worry about all the stuff you can read online!

    Traditionally the tall font is a sane fuzz that doesn’t go overboard. Clarity in open chords.The W&C sounds like it’s peaking a bit to be honest.I have yet to try EHX version but I love what I’m hearing. Can it reach those sparkling harmonic boxey overtones? Subtle scooped mids the W&C is known for?

    Interesting. First impression is that the ehx has more bass and body than the W&C, but as the video progresses the tone stack of the W&C seems to have a better range/sweep than the EHX.
    Also, I can tell you in my experience that the W&C is surprisingly quiet on single coils and stacked with an OD as well. Very negligible hum.

    Do i just WANT the EHX to win? The same settings on the two pedals don't exactly match up, so i don't know if you could dial in more fat on the Wren & Cuff... but it seems more shrill and less thick. Am i wrong? More warmth and low end and a more pleasing high end on the EHX? Not to put the other one down, it might suit some players, i'm just feeling it this way.

I have a JHS Muffeletta, and had the big NYC Standard big muff in the past, and I always prefer to crank the amp to the point of breakup and turn the volume up past unity gain or more, then dial in the sustain to taste. Wren and Cuff wins it for build, components and sound. But the EHX Green Russian wins it for value and not bad sounding either!

      In your opinion.
      I think your opinion is substantially in the minority. I have no vested interest, I'm a bottom feeder, I scrape whatever I can out of the used market. My tolerances are substantially looser than most consumers. Still, I, and quite a few others seem to think the EHX sounded better in this comparison.

    is the Wren and cuff quiet as shit?

    I actually prefer the Tall Font Russian! Sounds a bit more focused (might be easier in band context) but still has this Russian Big Muffy vibe. Eventhough I'd rather buy the EHX one. Sounds amazing too, is a lot cheaper and it's from fcking EHX! :D

    The EHX sounds better, has more output and costs way less. They've absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one.

    Can't believe you didn't try these pedals out with a bass! The Tall Font Russian is the bass muff fuzz benchmark. You even had a bass in the room!

    $200 for David, $100 for Goliath... Minor diffs between them, resale is the biggest diff. I go used if I go.

    I am not hearing any dynamics from the guitar come through with the EHX version, and the gain knob doesn’t do that much. Wren and cuff all the way, any day !

    The only difference seemed to be the volume control was on less on the wren and cuff. There really wasn’t a huge difference here apart from the price tag. EHX was my winner here

    Damn when I saw that this video was about green muffs I was hoping for some Pink Floyd stuff (Momentary Lapse of Reason/Division Bell). Pete's playing though was as orgasmic as ever #gayforhonore
