good job, one quick tip though, if you remove the bark from those logs, it reduces the rot that sets in and makes them last longer

I've only just noticed how you can add an enhancement to your wall build... if you have the rocks near by, put a foundation of larger rocks down before laying down the logs for the wall. The advantage is keeping the first log off the ground where it is subject to moisture absorption issues and won't dry out as fast after a rain. A bit of debris will shore up the gaps to prevent the wind coming in along the rocks. I enjoy your videos very much, been a long time subscriber from over here in Canada.

Skin the logs! If not they will rot to soon! Harden and partly burn the tips of the poles you are to put into the ground. Do not let the horizontal logs touch the ground! Use stones for that lower part or they will rot too soon. Great work Lily. You are just brilliant and have the worlds most charming accent. I asked an Austrian once, he spoke German very well and asked about the difference between a German person and a Austrian one... he looked at me like I just crawled out from a rock after 1000 year of hibernation and said: Gemütlichkeit! :)

I used to have fun in the woods like this when I had woods backing up to my dead end street. But then the school who owned the woods that said they would never sell the land well...sold the land and now there is a sub division where woods used to be. Really sucks cause I miss the nature that was right in my backyard and the fun I used to have, hopefully when I sell this house in a couple years my next home will be backed up to woods again.

I understand where ya coming from, I grew up on a street that over looked some allotments with some wasteground by a beck and I absolutely loved to play there as a child. We had a ‘den’ that was really just a rumble pile with grass growing on it tbh, the person that owned the land left us to play on there for years but after both us and the neighbour who’s child we played with moved houses the area was taken back back the owner and renovated. I think it was lovely for the owner of the land not to bother us at all and let us enjoy playing around there. We had great fun any many adventures in the area. This was about 35 years ago and now the wasteground has houses built on it 🤷‍♀️ thankfully the allotments still stand so that’s something of a win for Mother Nature 💓

I lived for 40 years in a house heated by wood, and must have split hundreds of chords with axe, maul, wedge and sledge by now. I always wear strong gloves for any kind of rough, sharp, and splintery wood working, just as I always wear shoes while doing heavy work. Love the dogs! Thanks for the video!

I like your pants Miss Lilly. A very effective camouflage.
I am retired military and hunter and always interested in camouflage effectiveness. I own a Columbia jacket(Roan Mountain) that has a very effective proprietary camouflage. When I am in nature I like to be a part of it as much as I can.
Good job on your shelter as well.

Roughen the skin on your hands always mean that you need to damage it. All the hardnes you get on your skin (feet, hands and so on) are from damage made earlier. The hardnes might seem tough, but is more prone to damage later on. So always wear protection. Always take care of your hands and feet. Think of it like tying a knot on a string. Every knot left on the string weakens it. It is the same for your skin. But you are off course in charge of your own hands so please do what you feel right :-) . Awsome build there Lilly.

What the medievals used to do was to coppice their wood. Trees would be chosen (particularly for firewood) on their ability to sprout new growth from a stump. Every couple of years the new sprouts would be cut for use and then that stump left to produce new sprouts.

Hey Lilly! Great Channel, longtime subscriber... Just a thought, you are putting a lot of work into your Bug Out Camp, I venture to say those posts you are driving into the ground for use as wall guides might last longer if you covered up that "mushroomed" end where the hammer hits it with something like an old can, plastic bottle, or some heavy duty aluminum foil to protect them from rain. We have extended the useful life of fence posts on the farm here by doing this... FWIW I know it isn't "natural" but neither are the tarps.

Amazing. I have a question. I'm sure the bark on the logs provides substantial protection from moisture, etc., but if you removed the bark and applied Tung oil, as the Chinese used to do to treat the wood of their ships, would that be useful? Or even the Japanese smoking method Shawn James uses--admittedly he applies this to tree trunks.
