Sean all of your videos are excellent it’s a shame that RUclips doesn’t understand the quality of your videos in the way you show your videos makes all of your videos exceptional teaching aids as well as entertainment there’s never a video that you can’t learn something from in at least 2 to 3 different things that you didn’t think of and/or need to improve upon to gain or improve your outdoor skills continue on doing what you’re doing more people when they see how you do your videos will be grateful and entertained at the same time keep up the good work God bless you and all of your effort to keep the channel in the faith in all of what you do going I know it’s difficult and very and selfish of you to give you your time and energies in this way best of health you and your family STEVE JONES
It's really nice to have someone on YT who knows what they are doing in the Cascade rainforest. In Alaska you prepare for things. Here everything looks fine, so it is much more deadly in terms of tricking people into not being prepared and luring them into hypothermia and other dangers. I pretty much do everything you do with the exceptions of a few tricks. Also carry a min 10x12 tarp as the sideways mist can be turned off with a few more feet. Great work on your channel and making sure people can see and figure out what you are doing, and how they can replicate.
"If it ain't rainin', we ain't trainin'." Love it! Nice safety knot on the boline! And it's been a really long time since I've seen anyone make a fisherman's knot. Semper Fi.
Jorge Coalcrakerbuschcraft, Dan Wowak he's a genious CPL.here is good gotta alot Of good things to say, but I dont feel he's the teacher I need. One thing is . THEY BOTH BRING ALOT TO THE TABLE. IF I WERE EVER IN THE SHIT I'D WANT THEM BOTH IN FRONT OF ME. AS YOU WERE.
This was the first Shawn Kelly vid that I saw and I’ve been watching ever since. I have learned so much from this series and the others that he has recommended. He’s the best!
I love how you demonstrated how to put that system together and I wished someone in the Air Force had taught us all how to do that. I am retired now and living in a rural area and do love camping out and that technique is very important and will help those like myself. I am saving a copy of your video so I can refer back to it for anything I may forget. I thank you so much and hope you are having a Blessed weekend.
I appreciate the calm, clear and concise way you explain things. The quality closeups and slow deliberate movements allow me to really practice doing things correctly. Nice work!
One of the best channels on YT for bushcraft. I really like the way he teaches knots - or rather how he clearly films himself making the knot, even when he's not specifically teaching knots. Ohh.. and I FINALLY know how to coil a long rope that makes it easy to store AND deploy! 4:29
Great stuff, I also carry pre made toggles for the same reason as the stakes. Toggles save time tieing especially if conditions are sub optimal, cold, wind, rain and reduce dependence on manual dexterity.
Former 8404 FMF Corpsman who will tell you straight up that my instructors weren’t this spot on at Camp Johnson NC. This Marine is as squared away as a gig line on Sunday Morning. This is the first vid I’ve seen of the Corporal’s and I instantly subscribed. If anything just for a Ref Tra on stuff I learned 30 years ago. BZ Marine, you have another loyal follower.😎🍺
Great video...! Being prepared for dirt time so you are not wasting time and energy when conditions turn bad is a life saver. Remember to do the simple things before you are numb from cold, or soaked from rain. Keep up these good educational videos...!
Very clever and well thought out. Your thinking reflects a methodical, well organized approach but what struck me as golden is that you have a system that others can follow. If people are taught effective methods and a few solid techniques they can learn quickly and contribute, help/teach others and they'd learn something that might just save them from a harsh time in the outdoors. I need to watch your video again and learn for myself.
Very clear instructions, with visuals enacting exactly what you described. I'm a layman, and even I understood these directions, and I'm confident I can replicate an approximation of this setup. Thank you! I just subscribed!
Hey, I like all your great videos. As I'm from an old coast town, serving my military duty in the west german navy and sailed with colleages in baltic sea and around corsica, I've got an old sailors knot trick (you perhaps already know?): Adding simple grannys knot at each cord or rope end prohibits slipping it off through loop. I see you already use self drawing knots, but this is the way how sailors fix sails even against large wind forces, which might also arise on your tarp/tent in windy storm. Thats why I prepare my ropes and cordes with one granny knot, it avoids fraing out if the molting at the gets old.
GREAT VIDEO! I put together a kit using some of my existing equipment and got a chance to test it today outside. I didn't have exactly the same equipment, but I have some lessons learned. For example, my tarp is a heavier tarp that I have already and not the lighter tarp you have. Also, I used the Ridgeline System you have in another video that uses some bankline loops. And since we don't have many trees in my backyard, I improvised one side with a 4' garden stake. Here are my lessons learned: 1) More tent stakes would be better 2) Pack extra bankline 3) Use a lighter tarp 4) Get the ridgeline as tight as you possibly can. 5) Look for some small "toggles" to keep in the kit rather than depending on picking up enough sticks to secure the ridgeline 6) Garden stakes are really weak 7) It's currently usable but could be a lot better with some small improvements! I suggest everyone test all your equipment before you need it. Shortcuts can lead to problems--find the problems in your back yard.
wilderness outfitters. Dave Canterbury mentioned you. Also I believe two others. after Dave Canterbury mentioned you I looked around. been telling my friends about your site. I have leukemia and others have health issues as well. we're trying to be prepared for anything. I've forgotten so much from chemotherapy. these shows really help. Blessings and happy New year!
Another good explanation video. I’m glad you had enough sense to use a contrasting bright color 550 cord with a dark background. So many others use black cord against a dark background and the viewer cannot see what’s going on.
I’ve learned sooo much just from the few weeks of watching your videos..I gotta say your channel is the best channel I have found! Thank you for your knowledge!
I have to agree with Mr Everyguy, and vrtually every one else that commented, your instructional videos are outstanding. Thank you very much for the clarity of your presentations.
You have a great way of teaching. 5 C's easy to remember, easy to recite. Simple is better. Taking basic supplies and showing how to use them to survive. Thank you for taking the time to build good content. Keep broadcasting!!
Great tips. I carry 6 lightweight aluminum stakes, an 8 X10 sil-nylon tarp with the looped cordage already attached to the loops, and 2 50' lengths of paracord plus 2 loops for prusik knots. Good work corporal!
Again, truly superior! I think I’m finally getting it. Bowline, Trucker’s Hitch (was always afraid of that one till I saw it here, repeatedly), Prussik, Lark’s Head, and yes, the Marlin Spike Hitch. I may learn slow (exceptionally hard head o’ mine), but I learn good (and in no small part due to your methodic and exacting repetition. And as always, “We ain’t trainin’ if it ain’t rainin’!” Well done again, sir.
Awesome video, Corporal. It was very well thought out, very informative, and most of all, very practical. That kit is small enough to go anywhere and it is cheap enough to have several. It would be good to have one in every car in the family in case someone gets stranded
Thank you. I can rerun this video as many times as needed to learn the knots. You are again doing a service to your country. Subscribed and deleted some subscriptions to other sites.
A helpful tip I've learned from a bush crafter years ago is if you're going to be in a wooded area you can make your own tent stakes or toggles because mother nature already provides that for you. You can make your own cordage from local plants and small trees if you know the area well enough and you know what you're doing. Less items to worry about, less items to pack and unpack, and less weight.
Great video, I like the cordage part alot as that's what's been on my mind lately. You explained and showed it in a way that my brain picked it up. Thank you.
Awesome! I love your videos and your amazing types of survival skills. Thank you for this great content and the way how you share your knowledge with us. Best regards from germany!
Thank you for taking the time and getting your boots wet to provide us with such a great informational survival video. I really thank you for the video and your service, I learn new things with every video I watch. Definitely subscribed.
Shawn, I have been teaching my step granddaughter how to tie some of your basic knots. She is taking g to it like a duck to water. I also told her to review your videos and where to find them. Thanks for everything.
Hey Corporal, I know this video has been out a while, I like your videos. I just discovered you a week or two. I like the phrase " If it ain't rainin, it ain't trainin! " I spent some time in the Army, and couldn't tell you how many times I've heard that. Rain, Sand and big ants is standard issue to Army Training, looks like it's similar to Marine training! As tweek to your pack, place your cordage in your cup, to save room. Glad I found you here.
The Paracord hank demo is , as you mentioned, a game changer. And your closing shot, walking under that bridge or whatever is awesome production. It looks very apocalyptic . Excellent content
Thanks for another video on a great piece of kit. I'm learning a lot (and have both Canterbury's books now, too) and am making a list to assemble my own kit.

I missed this one but it was great to go back and watch.
my god this guy is a genious. don't know how I came across his channel but I'm glad I did
Jorge Garza- he’s a Marine Corporal. The E-5 in the Corp is a much more demanding/ different responsibilities than most. Except Rangers.

Life saving advice and instruction
Clear, concise, and easy to replicate
One of my favorites on YT
😎👍
Great video! Love the fact that you actually teach the knots! Thanks!
*very concise, informative and straight forward and to the point...no nonsense, fluff of distractions...the sort of thing i appreciate*
It's amazing how far you've come in 6 years! Your presence is so much better today but your content is still awesome K.I.S.S.
I’ve watched this one at least 3 times. Outstanding!

you rock, dude! excellent explanation, demonstrations, clear camera views, don't go too fast or skip anything. natural teacher.
thank you! :)
Simple system. Well explained. Even a jarhead could do it.
Hi Corporal Kelly, Thanks for one of the most clear instructions I've yet come across for setting up shelter, and the basics of useful knots. Cheers!
One of the best videos that I saw about shelter. Very good. Thanks for post it.
