- 1836, the province of Texas, under the possession of Mexico, rebels against the Mexican dictatorial authority and proclaims its independence. The General Sam Houston (Richard Boone) that commands the armed forces of Texas, is pursued by Santa Ana's troops, far superior in number. Houston decides to take refuge behind the Rio Grande in order to quickly reform a bigger army.
However, Houston needs time, he entrusts the Colonel Travis the mission to stem the progression of the Mexican army. The colonel entrenches himself and his fellowmen, in an old mission half destroyed and transformed for the occasion into a fortress. For 13 days, the legendary Davy Crockett (John Wayne), Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) William Travis (Laurence Harvey) and 184 hardy Americans and Texicans hold the Alamo in hopeless combats against the massive Mexican army.
They know that the final assault will turn to a massacre, but they are ready to write down with their blood one of the most heroic pages of American history.
The Alamo was considered by John Ford as a masterpiece and ranks among cinema’s great classic and stirring movies.

The costume bill for this film must have been enormous!
Some money was saved (on zips) by using authentic drawstrings on uniforms.
Mexico always had great uniforms throughout history. Even today. The only one that beats them is the Nazi uniforms. But besides that. Mexico is the best today.

Man 7,000 troops the producers took it too a whole other level cause Santa Anna had 4,000 troops but they added 3,000 more I’d like to see another one like this one with so many uniforms
The American myth
The army of Operations was 6,000 men, Santa Anna arrived in San Antonio with 1,100 infantry and 300 cavalry and also received a 1,000 man reinforcement from General Gaona, other troops were to the south and also behind Santa Anna's.

I personally think that the Texas revolution and the Mexican American war decided who would control North America and I wonder what would have happened if Mexico subdued the Texas revolution and defeated the United States in the Mexican American War and I wonder if Mexico would be a world super power today like the United States is
Well it would benefit the British at the time. They too was worry about USA expansion especially into their Oregon territory.
Honestly if Mexico cooperated with British canada for defense alliance. The USA would have to worry about British fleet in their plus a blockade that the USA won't able to land in Mexico capital.

Not likely. Not even close. Mexico was still a pretty newly formed nation that encompassed vast territories left to them by the Spanish when they won their independence. California had a growing culture that was too remote from Mexico City to be governed effectively. Shortly before Kearney entered California, a Mexican army had been dispatched to quell a rebellion in the Los Angeles area. They had their asses handed to them by Spanish-speaking Californios at Cahenga Pass, present day Hollywood. If it wasn't for the American invasion, California would have eventually become its own country. If Mexico had kept Texas, that's about as far as it could go. It turned out, Mexico was invaded and occupied by the French in the 1860s. Mexico simply didn't have the political unity and military strength to hold its own territory reliably in the face of foreign belligerents.
Also, if it wasn't for the Texan Revolt, there would have been no war with Mexico in the 1840s. The war was started by a territory dispute over the land between the Rio Grande and the Neuces River, which were in Texas. It later turned out to be part of President Polk's expansionist ambitions. Had Santa Anna successfully subdued the Texicans in the 1830s, there would have been no dispute.

It looks spectacular, but most of those columns are marching in absolutely nonsensical circuitous patterns, I guess so that they could show as many troops on the screen at the same time.
I diden,t Think mexican Soldiers had that meny different uniforms in the army.
Indeed, if they had very varied and very colorful uniforms, a different one for each type of unit, which was usually made that way for the military parades that were so done, in fact, the uniforms were more expensive than the armament they used.

Most professional armies of that time had many different types of uniforms for the different regiments
@@MZeki-gw2xg Most European armies has one colour for most of their rehiments esp the foot unit. Such as Red for British, white and the blue for France, Green for Russian though there might be a few differences s7ch ad Green for the British 95th and white for some foreign raised regiments in Napoleon's armies.

So how many troops were there on each side? I've seen different #'s in different places.

185 guys with smooth bore flintlock muskets and a few flintlock rifles again thousands of experienced fighting Mexican troops? (They had just spent a few years putting down insurrections and revolts... they were experienced) Reminds me of Sparta King Leonidas and his 300 against the tens of thousands of Persians under Xerxes.
The Alamo defenders should have taken their small arms and cannons and gone to join Houston.
I'm not sure about this particular battle, but Mexican historians have pointed to inclement weather and lack of shoes among the Mexican troops in other battles.
@@johnmolina3284 When Santa Anna was marching up to Texas, he conscripted many civilians to join his army. These people had no experience and little training. Most of them didn't fire their rifles correctly because they didn't like the recoil on their shoulder. They instead would fire from their hip. This was a big reason why the Mexicans suffered heavy losses at the Alamo; the soldiers in the back would not properly fire their weapons and hit the front-line troops in the back of their heads.

Fairly decent job with the uniforms...the Red I believe is incorrect...Most of the Mexican Army had either white or Blue Jackets...Some of the Blue Jackets had a red chest piece, but no full red jackets. At least as far as my research has shown me. The white uniforms had to be a huge pain keeping clean in the field.

For My Own POV, & My Recollections of First Viewing this Great Film 📽️🎥 🙂🙂. IT had too of been the Second or Third time I'd seen it. The Year & Occasion was 1969 or 1970 in Nisku, Alberta, Canada. With My Mother, Two Sisters and Some Very Good Friends. All together with Our Group, & the Other Patron's that Night. There might of been Thirty to Fifty People in Total Attendance, at that Theater 🎭🎭 that given Night.
My Point being, was when they Showed, this Segment of the Film, with the Vast Mexican Army, on The March. That Entire 30'x 15' Screen was Totally Lit Up in it's TechniColor Grandeur so Brilliantly that with the Sounds, You Felt like they were Marching Right Over Top, of You and On too Your very Body. God Damnit was it something too Behold, and Experience as well. I was a Teenager then, and Man What an impression it Put on Me for Many years too Come.
Mr Wayne's Adaptation & the Great Effects, by all Parties too His Company, and the Resulting Film? Were I believe a Modern Day ex. of a Masterpiece. No Doubt about That.
Unfortunately it was later Torn apart, & Maliciously Criticized by the SOB's in Hollywood, and Elsewhere? That Ended up Having a Feeding Frenzy with it. And John Wayne, just too Satisfy, Thier Own Reputations, Ego's, & other Agendas at the Time.

While it may be that Ford, in a drunken stupor, thought it a masterpiece, (he did second unit work that was mostly later reshot), NO SERIOUS FILM CRITIC TODAY or even in the 60's considered this one of the great epics like "Ten Commandments, " "Ben-Hur," "Spartacus," "Lawrence," etc. Even commercially, it didn't recoop its money until 1971!!!
Your improved version of the movie is---------------where? Film critics are professional A-holes at best. I ALWAYS enjoyed any Wayne movie BETTER than those hawked by critics attempting to shoot them down.

This movie was full of inaccuracies about what took place at the Alamo.
Bob Eakin well you have to think this was made in the 1960s so they could not do the battle at night and they didn’t really have all the good technology like we have today i still think it is one of the best movies ever that portrayed the Alamo I mean sure their are a couple of flaws but remember it was made in the 1960s

En realidad Santa Anna sólo uso 1200 hombres en la batalla y de esos sólo unos 700 entraron activamente en combate, los estadounidenses tenian 500 hombre tenía un buen número defensivo, y nada de valientes ya que eran filibusteros ademas la mayoría se rindió el problema fue que se toco la marcha la cual no permitía tomar prisioneros, que Hollywood no te haga tonto!!
El color del uniforme al final del clio parece mal, creo que era azul.
Habían varios tipos de infantería: Ligera, Pesada, Guardias y Cazadores, no se si la ligera o pesada llevaba el azul y la otra el rojo

It certainly LOOKS impressive, but that army probably wouldn't have stood up to any ACTUAL army, rather than a ragtag group of settler militia.
Well, without the wonders of modern cgi, you worked with what you had back then, and they just can’t all match the scale of Waterloo or Gettysburg.
It was an army used to putting down revolts. Against another professional army (the US in 1846 to 1847) you can easily see its weakness in its antiquated tactics.
And the way John Wayne shows the mexicans, as weak and easy to kill, is false. They knew very well what they were doing. Go watch the 2004 battle of the Alamo scenes, and then
determine wether or not they could stand up against an "actual army". Plus, it also depends on who's commanding them.

@@manuelmoreno-st3hd Lol the Mexican Army did not beat back the French. They won one battle and lost at the same city a year later. As for the Spanish, a New Spain general Agustin de Iturbide literally defected to the cause of independence.
