I'm glad you showed at least two videos because the first video was a clinic on how to not use Carriers and the second video demonstrates the proper usage of Carriers. For those wondering: Do not: - Use Carriers to engage Goliaths (and if you must, focus fire) - Stray into the open field where Goliaths can come in and kill your Carriers Do: - Take advantage of the terrain and always know where you can escape - Harass expansions - Pick off tanks that aren't being supported by Goliaths If you must violate the "Do Not"s, make sure you're moving with your main army as they will deal with threats and keep your Carriers near the back so only the Interceptors die. Another thing to note is that Carriers force Terrans to change their army composition by increasing their Goliath production, which is compounded by the fact that you're picking off Tanks, as well.
Sean, seriously ty so much for this. Im so happy that you are making SC 1 content again. Coming back to the game after 5 or so years of not playing it, apart from the point that i could never get to a decent level of play... its haaard man, but just watching a couple of this videos helps me so much!. i had the mechanics but not the strategic insight that you give here, now i feel i'm playing a lot better than never before, and understanding the game like never before instead of playing a ton of games without correcting any mistakes.. thank you again, i really enjoy what you do and hope to see you in a lot of more sc1 related stuff.
"Goliaths murder terrans!" :D sorry Sean, I just love these blunders you do. I also love that BW is actually much more interesting than SC2, I never really warmed up to SC2, even though I was hyped as fuck before every expansion, it never took that spot in my heart.
I’m a late joiner to the Starcraft world, but am loving your videos on all the nuances of the game. My friend always goes cloaked wraiths when I go carrier and picks off my observers right away, leaving my carriers defensive-less. How would you recommend I counter this?
Completely random comment, but I've been watching old Funday Mondays, discovering this channel only months ago. I've noticed Sean's energy and delivery has changed quite a lot in 3 years, or since he stopped doing his dailies. Is he trying to be more professional now or just a change in character?
Ignatz Firespark he has gotten older since the previous dailies, but the essence of the shows are different. The old dailies were a mix of fun crazy submitted games and some high level pro analysis to help people learn the game and certain builds or concepts. And this new show is strictly educational so him being more professional is to help make his points clear and not get muddied with some jokes or get too off topic. So I wouldn’t say his character has changed too much because if you watch the hearthstone shows it’s still the same old Sean, but I would definitely say that theme of the show is very different to the older dailies.
Okay, just found Sean through DotA but have been getting into SC lately so this series is super useful. Looking back the Funday Mondays were very entertaining though :D.
I don't understand what he meant around 19:20 where he said the Terran player is saying he should scout early but how does he know. Day9 says he you don't need to know for a long time. Ok, so you don't need to scout for a long time? How is that good? If you tech up/turtle and don't scout, that ony seems to work if they other guy does the same, no? I mean it seems to me you'd want to know what the other side is doing ASAP, no?
He's talking about carriers specifically. You see throughout the entire video that it takes ages for carriers to become threatening. It doesn't matter if you don't know about the carriers until you see the first couple pop out because they're slow in every regard. Of course you want to scout your opponent and get an idea of what they're doing but it doesn't matter if you see it or not when it comes to carriers. That's the message.
I can't believe you talked about carriers without talking about Stork vs Flash. As a fan of the Flawless Commander in Chief I would love for you to review the LEGENDARY Stork carriers just for fun if nothing else ruclips.net/video/ta1rwJ6OkmY/видео.html
you can try Wraiths against Carries, or try to go mass Marines and Medics and go kill him, as a cheese build, it works sometimes and try to hide out your buildings if you scout out early that they go Carriers
Don't go for Wraiths against Protoss unless you know for certain you're safe from Dragoons. Like yeah that one match where Fantasy beat Stork with wraiths because he knew that the protoss couldn't use dragoons to counter it.
20:10 of the video when hiya scans protoss base he sees core spinning.Dont he know carriers are coming based on that?At this point of the game its obviously upgrades from core.
Valks work okay versus carriers since protoss units are 1/3 shields which have no armour, and they have 2 armor of their own which means interceptors only do 2/3 of their damage to Valkyries. Problem is that they are very expensive to build and upgrade and they get somewhat countered by psi storm/dragoon. I only ever see it used in money maps since most Terrans cant afford a squadron of Valks.
Whenever you see toss go carriers, you know they've already lost. But here's what I dont understand, why not send one arbiter to each terran expansion and recall the carriers there? Then when the golliath kill-force comes, just recall them to another expo? That would kill the immobility of terran, yet I rarely see this done, and never to the scale I'm talking about.
Build covert ops 45 seconds lock down research 100 seconds ghost build time 32 seconds. The ghosts need to wait until 100 energy to disable one carrier once and the whole thing costs a bunch of gas. So you need to react basically before carriers are out and it's not a hard counter at all. Also ghosts are useless vs protoss ground which Goliath aren't.
Ghosts have been famously used to shut down carrier play before. I think BoXer did it one time. The problem with ghosts though is how expensive they are. As Sean said in an earlier stream, "They cost almost as much as a tank. Wouldn't you rather just have a tank?"
Wraiths are hard countered by dragoons. In the few instances in which wraiths were used successfully in TvP, it is when the terran knew for certain they were safe from dragoons. The reason why they use Goliaths is because goliaths are the most stable, least punishable answer to carriers.
"You must keep your carriers moving" - this little details crosses the line between stupid-ish but good for gameplay weird behaviors and complete nonsense. With all respect to this great game, with all respect to idiotic dragoons pathfinding and all other nuances that make the game what it is, carriers-always-moving is insane.
In the video he did covering the different terran units I think he explains a lot of the problems with wraiths. I can't remember off hand but the video is worth a watch if you haven't seen it. Might have some insight for you there.
I'm obviously not a pro, but just thinking through it, Wraiths are a fairly good counter to carriers, but in order to properly defend against Carriers with Wraiths you need to build quite a few of them. So, if you mass enough Wraiths to counter your opponents Carriers, they can just stop building Carriers and Dragoons will just waste your Wraiths. Wraiths are pretty much useless late game since their ground attack is so terrible, so it's hard to justify building a ton of them for one specific unit counter.
I think another part is that you have to build a whole new set of structures. You would need a crap ton of wraiths aka "paper airplanes" to take down carriers (exactly as Rachel mentioned b/c dragoons will wreck them even if you don't stop building carriers). But that also means a bunch of starports compared to just re-purposing the already built factories to build goliaths instead of vultures. It's just a more efficient switch over.
wraiths can be good if you can snipe his observers then kill off all his carriers, this only works if they don't know about your wraiths cause if they do they will just make a bunch of observers
Carriers destroy Wraiths and Cloak is not reliable b/c a smart Protoss will have a few observers with the Carriers (more than one b/c he knows you'll be going for the Observer).
valks are just terrible units in general Any more than 2 is literally useless And because you don't level up air attack until after ground is plus 3 unless you obviously have 2 armories.. It's just a weaker choice The point is to mineral waste the fuck out of the carrier user. Nogoliaths murder carrier interceptors.
all this video shows is how carrier is unbalanced and terran dont realy have anything for it.this stupid unit will never be balanced in this matchup until valkyrie can splash interceptors.
I'm glad you showed at least two videos because the first video was a clinic on how to not use Carriers and the second video demonstrates the proper usage of Carriers. For those wondering:
Do not:

This series is one of my absolute favorites to watch despite me having never played Starcraft before and I don't know why.
cuz Sean is an experienced caster and this game he actually knows the most about.
also he is an awesome story-teller
Holy shit, all these StarCraft videos are master class. Thank you Day9 for investing so much time putting these together.
How to counter carriers: JUST KILL EM!
Brilliant :D
Love SC and Day9 keep it up!

Also correct but not in this context. Goliaths are a core unit against Terran because dropships are so critical to the TvT strategy.

Funday Monday is meant to be a goof, this is more "serious"
11:33 “I’m also not taking a lot of damage either” thinks he has 3 carriers.

Terran cant go for valkyries to counter the carriers? just not enough damage? they feel like they hurt me plenty when my carriers get hit with them.

arbiter and carriers together are too expensive, if you have both its better to use them for stasis against golliaths
If carriers is the problem in TvP, how about Ghost's Lockdown?
isn't that's the ultimate counter against big mech unit like Carriers?
Build covert ops 45 seconds lock down research 100 seconds ghost build time 32 seconds. The ghosts need to wait until 100 energy to disable one carrier once and the whole thing costs a bunch of gas. My counter to carriers were valkyries.
The interceptors don't take splash damages, so... I lost all the time.

Tory True. But there is a mod where interceptors do take splash damage from corsairs and valkyries. In that mod, interceptors disappear in 2 seconds!
