Positive reinforcement and distractive training is key. The most important tip from you is a tired dog is a trainable one. I take him for a 20-30 minute walk every morning and he is so much more trainable now. Thanks again.

    Your videos help me SO MUCH. We currently have a 6 months old puppy and I get frustrated very quickly or I get an attitude quickly because I am a very impatient person BUT I know it‘s wrong because dogs can feel your energy. Seeing how calm you train your dog helps me to be more calm with mine and of course your tipps are amazing!🙏🏽 a big issue with our puppy is that she always wants to eat everything off the ground when we go for a walk. It has also caused her to throw up before😫

  • @mannycalavera2335

    I love that Zak also shows you that it is not always easy to "stick to the script" with a puppy. And that even a professional dog trainer is not 100% on point all of the time, nor is he able to quickly address any and all unwanted behavior. It is this, just as much as the actual training information, that helps me translate the lessons to real life.
    The truth is that it is a process that takes time, the truth is that a dog will not take to every training right away, and the truth is that situations do occur for which there are no textbook answers ready. This can make training disheartening when you don't show people the struggles that go along with it.

  • @uscjake868
    @uscjake868 5 лет назад +4

    Zak, thanks so much for the video. It's great to see what progression looks like with a dog trainer's dog. Looks a lot like my 13 week old goldendoodle. Puppy pushups aren't so easy and looks the same. It definitely makes me feel like my training isn't too far off. Your other videos are task specific, but these are so much better to help give a better idea of progression.

    Nice training videos. I got my first dog Maltese 11 week old. Firs day I let him sleep in my bed (of course gave him bath before that) then we both slept on carpet with blankets spread across. Next day onwards he in his bed on the carpet next to my bed. I taught him fetching the ball and sitting then I found these videos. Now following this trying to teach him 'shake hand ' today only he did twice.
    He had his first outing today. I didn't let him go in grass as I wanted to check with the vet one more time. Luckily my niece has Golden retriever 6month old female. So the other day they met first time and today in the park few times. Hope they become good friends. Finding these videos very helpful as I never had a dog before.

    Hi Zak, I just got a new Maltese puppy and we have just started training classes, but she won’t concentrate in the class but when we get home get home she does everything perfectly! Do you have a reason why or how to change this? I love your videos 💕

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge 5 лет назад +38

      Great question! Keep watching! As puppy class goes on, Inertia becomes less and less responsive to me as her curiosity really starts blossoming, Bottom line though, it’s hard to concentrate on boring stuff like sit and “leave it” when there are exciting dogs all around. The more “normal” it becomes to be around other dogs, the easier it is to get your dog to comply with your requests!🕺🏼👀 Hope this helps!

      She finds everything else in puppy class more rewarding then you.
      I'm not doing puppy classes, I let the pup learn and gain confidence in an environment they're comfortable with until they're more confident and then choosing to go to classes or not. That helps them bond more with me and it gives me a higher value plus usually reduced stress and anxiety.
      However I find it a lot easier to train a dog then some other people I guess.
      Anyway you just have to prove to the dog that you're more rewarding, (with puppies I'm doing Basicallt the dog can Injage with 1 out of 3 people/ dogs that way they get good experience with them but they don't expect eveyone to come up to them for pets) maybe use higher value treat and being more exciting

      Get her out of the room because there are less distractions and if she listens outside take her inside to try making her do the tricks. If it doesn’t work get her outside again. So in that way you use the environment as currency because she wants to go back to the other puppies but can only do this when she listens to you.

    Hey Zak, would really love some more detailed advice on fetch. How should I teach my puppy to let go/drop the toy? Usually I can get her to run back to me but she won’t drop the toy, and she doesn’t run back close enough to me that I can grab it. Would you suggest teaching her to drop the toy and if so, would love some advice! I’ve been teaching her let go if I am holding the other end of the object, but as mentioned I can’t grab the toy when playing fetch 😅 Love this series and have been following since the beginning 😊

      Zak would say that you should be practicing on a long lead so that your dog isn't in a position to play keep away :) Check out Zak's video called "Everything you need to know to teach your dog a perfect fetch"!! It has answers to all of your questions and more 🤗

    We have a Sheltie, she is five months old, and we cannot get her to stop chewing on the edges of the carpet; she has all kinds of toys, and chews, when she starts to chew on the carpet, we try to distract her with the toy, and say, good girl" when she takes the toy, but, she continues to want to chew on the carpet, bitter apple spray has no effect on the chewing.

    Hey Zak, I love the way we get to see you go through all the rough stages of training a puppy but I am having some trouble teaching my dog to stop barking and digging but she is 7 years old and she doesn't seem to understand that I don't like when she barks and digs and gets out. Do you have any tips for me? I have been watching your videos for a couple of months now but what I have tried on her isn't exactly working and my family is looking for a puppy to get for more company for the family and so Lilly (My dog ) will have another friend and I don't want Lilly to teach the puppy that it's ok to bark and dog. She has learned how to sit, rollover, listen and lie down but won't listen when it comes to barking and digging. Thank you 🙂

    Hey Zak. I completely appreciate the use of treats to reinforce positive behaviour. Do you alter her food intake to offset the amount of extra treats Inertia gets? We use our puppy's kibble as a treat, but constant training makes me worry Molly is being over fed.

    We tried everything to get our corgi puppy under control. The only thing that worked was time. One he reach the four month mark he mellowed out and became the do we always wanted!
