I don't think anybody here in the comments apart from Paul Duffey understands what's happening here. What the driver was trying to do was hold the engine in place on the incline without using their brakes. Which is something these traction engines can do because you get two power strokes per revolution, which means steam on either side of the piston. This allows you to hold the engine in place if you close the throttle and hold the clutch tight at the right moment.
He's not wrong we run em up on inclines and hold em there all day long. Steam is the brakes Port Huron was one of the few manufacturers to have a real braking system.
@Marcus Keeler actually they did, if you shut the throttle at just the right moment mid stroke you can stop it without breaks and hold there which is what happened, if they wanted to get up the hill it could have handled that because it wasn't towing anything, but that wasn't the point
These incredible steam engines are such an important part of the modern world, I'd no idea groups of people had rescued them for what must inescapably be a very very long future. At a given point they will fail, but you have the videos: and hopefully that will be enough to make other generations far in the future explore them, discover how they were built and restore them?...............
i love modern technology im really interested in everrything but my man i still love this old beast i have big respect for people who invented this technology with their skills and instruments in that years its creazy
Got to respect the calmness of the lady behind the staring wheel and her partner. Being able to control that thing going in reverse at that slope takes some skill and understanding
Why is it we see these things pulling the tractor pull sleds, like they are nothing, but most of these hill climbs choke them off. Most of us could have pulled that little rise, from a dead start, on a used, single speed bicycle. What was the point of this video, other than the failure?
They don’t actually use the whole engine and only pull the throttle back enough to make it up. It would have been a really boring video if they sped up the hill with ease.
@@troybesecker1766 That hill was boring and disappointing, when he didn't make it. That was not really a hill, but a short, halfway steep, rise. If I published a video titled "Hill Climb, Steam Tractor, I would try my best to climb the hill, and make it a real hill. If they wanted to do some cute stuff, they should have explained it beforehand. That was a great looking and sounding traction engine, and probably is pretty strong, but their video production left a lot to be desired, to me, anyway. Explain it, in the description, for those of us who are a bit ignorant of the workings of a steam engine, but like to watch them.
@@wmden1 Understanding of steam engines and whatthey tried to do and show here would have helped you. The intention was to stop that beast on the climb mid way without using the break and only the engine power. Something many could not do with a modern car which is made to be driven by a 10 year old boy since it does all the mechanical controlling internally. This thing is fully manual and vintage. Very impressive indeed, if you understand what is going on. Climbing up that hump in the road would impress you? I am very impressed by the hold just with steam power and the reverse. That was very skillfull.
@@AchimEngels Once again; They titled the video, "Hill Climb Steam Tractor", with no other indication of what they were trying to do, key word being, tried, because they failed at climbing the hill and failed at what has already bean explained to me that they were trying to do. When it said, "Hill Climb" that was all I was looking for. When they failed to climb the hill, and failed to stop it and hold it, with the engine, the video appeared laughable to me, since no other explanation was given. I wouldn't claim to be an expert on steam engines, but I do have some understanding of how they work and of the valving and had seen another video of a steam tractor being stopped with the engine on about a 35 degree ramp, very successfully, which was impressive. That was long before I saw this video. I didn't make a negative comment on that video, because it was explained in the video title and description, what was being done. Again, if they had given some indication, beforehand on this video, I wouldn't have made the same comment. Please read the other comments, mine included, before yours. I don't need to be told I am ignorant more than once, even if I might be.
Well I mean, its in the name; "old steam engines" obviously it aint gunna be as efficient as a combustion engine but it still generates quite a lot of power.
Because the intention was not to go up, but to stop and hold mid way, which is very impressive demonstration of controlability of such an steam engine. To do that you have to know exactly how that thing operates and you must find the right handling to manage it. It could have gone up that hill easily if he wanted to. These things are not like a modern car that does most operations internally and self guided, so that every 10 year old boy can handle it. This displays impressive skills and understanding of how to handle such a beast here.

Professor Metal ; Thank you for the explanation. A small but quite important detail to know.
As an engine enthusiast I find these steam powered engines fascinating. Jay Leno got it right in collecting these old steam cars

Confused after reading the comments. So now I have to read up on steam engines. Thanks a lot. 😒
Rome BC would've been so entertaining if these were invented then.
Bro played hill climb racing in real life
Its crazy that now we have Dirt bikes and side by side ATV'S that could just fly over that hill
Massive amounts of torque steam engines have.
Winsor Steamorama had a hill trail steep and long enough that they would spin wheels doing this. Impressive to watch.

must be cool having a steam tractor
Way cooler than those mobility scooters old people use.
No. Those are very hot. It's steam 😂
