Worked a few nights on a herring drifter whilst on leave from the RN. I was 16 and the drifter shot 50 nets at dusk when the herring started to rise from the bottom. Midnight we started hauling, hard work for 4 or 5 hours. As we shook the herring out of the nets we were covered in jellyfish stingers, really painful on the eyes. My navy pay was £4 every fortnight and on my first night fishing I earned £14!! A lot of money in 1964.
That's the best video I've seen for ages mate, so pleased for you and your dad, as soon as I can arrange transport I'll put an order in for at least a stone of herring, 3 seal flippers, a kilo of blubber and a fresh crab, plus, if you have any left, a bag of sea weed. Take care mate, Norfolk Ray
Took me back to mackereling in Cornwall way back....we'd often pull skinny herrins on our 24 feather mackerel rigs....& many a pilchard too.....used to salt for pot bait & 'fat uns' for 'homers'.....bleddy 'ansum marinated!!(Just for the record, we'd often pull 120stone a man daily...best was 200stone a man....all shaken off lines by hand. Best I heard of was 1380 stone to 4 hands in a day....up off the Eddystone to a Looe boat "Ganesha"!) Glad ol'man'll have some jam for tea bless him LoL.
We fish herring different ways than what you are doing we have lead rope on the bottom of the net s and morning on both ends and in the fall we let our nets go down to 60 feet under water and leave the nets over night before we pull them and we get 23 foot boat loaded up to 10.000 pound of herring in ahull
I’ve put a ferrite choke on there at the minute, I just need a trip in the boat to try it. It’s got to be a capacitor in the alternator circuit or something
It's good to see the fish coming in beany makes me feel like I want to go to sea do you think it's safe for me to get a fishing boat with a licence and give up A&E lol no still would like to get one but I think them days have gone thanks so much for the video again
Great to see your luck has changed, you went to the right place this time. Any chance of buying a few off you? Love fresh fish too knackered to go fishing now.
Very nice to see you both out at sea and enjoying catching some fish for a change.
Thanks, it was nice to finally get a few

Yes it was, you can see why there was so many drifters cashing in on the silver darlings.

Corrr thats bloody good going. People couldnt handle that now, it was when boats were made of wood, and men of steel!
There used be a resister to filter out the engine interference with the electronics. Good luck. Have a great day
I will have to have a look for one thanks

They fish that way in Ireland I believe, the net is completely full of fish!
I've herring fish and set alot of nets we always set in a half moon so they'll hit the middle then head to the side full nets by the ton ..in Alaska
It all depends on tide. I’ve watched a few Alaskan herring videos, and there is plenty of fish!
Your right my friend oh my fishing was back a long time ago lol thanks
@@scottdilley356 You must have had some very good days, its all net shakers now to make it easier
Have though of the old type car radio suppresor that used to go on the dizzy or altenator to help with the noise on the finder?

You are right, fishing is just an expensive hobby now. Nice to do, but you can’t rely on it
about time hope you did ok at auction better than 3 lol
The selected large did ok at the auction, but the standard herring price was poor
Great to see your luck has changed, you went to the right place this time. Any chance of buying a few off you? Love fresh fish too knackered to go fishing now.
They are all gone now, but I put on fb when I have some
Hi great video do you ever sell herring at the door or boat thanks
I do sell them at the boat when I come ashore or cleaning the nets
What length net are ye legal to fish
It’s more to do with mesh size than length. We in reality restrict our length of gear by what we can handle
What do u mean by finer nets, aren’t they all mono
They are different diameter mono. The green monos I have are 0.35mm, while the clear monos are 0.3mm.
Oh so the seals hadn't eaten them all.😁
We had enough to cope with feeding the seals and still getting some
@@beanysfishing2555 2 weeks ago I got 15 in my small net off Blakeney, last night blank😔not even a whiting.
They look a little thin. "Shot rowes?' Been over 25 years since I last went 'herrining.'
No they havent shot their roe yet, a lot were 2 year old herring, not that big compared to the 3 year old kipper quality herring
Air rifle for the seals.
Need a lot more than a poxy air rifle
