To this day I get the chills watching this video. I remember first seeing it and hoping that a decade later, I'd still consider it one of the best videos ever made. Still feel that way.
The owl is a prisoner too. He knows that there’s nothing up there, it’s just an illusion. Differently from the crow, he’s aware, so he doesn’t bother to struggle, yet he’s condemned to look at this disgrace. No anger, no judgement: it’s his condition. The biggest cross to bear for an awakened is to live among the sleepers.
This speaks to me on so many levels. How I love this song.
Years later and still a masterpiece. :)
years later than that life still feels this way
@@jackiepuppetband3813 True
one of my favorite animations ever - goosebumps, every time!
Just saw the video and i had to make one of my first comment on RUclips, the author of the video i a pure genius.
I think there is more than 1 interpretation but there is mine :
Darkness is society.
The crow is trying to reach a goal that society defined as a must-have.
Dark objects that hits the crow are the representation of consumerism. For example, the paper sheet is the medias.
The crow's capacity to fly is the envy to get more of those dark objects, in order to reach the goal.
The rope is the representation of the ways that society makes hard to get this ultimate goal.
The energy of the crow is the current working model for 'economic power'
The light is the place designed for the 'richer' crows
The owl is those aware of the situation.
Maybe the owl could be the ones that take profit to this situation or even had made this situation possible !
Owl does not need to fly to the goal, she don't need to use her energy for that.
Owl knows what is behind the light : nothing really exciting
In conclusion the owl is the elite that chose to stay in darkness, because she does not want this situation to end.
And that's why she seems quite scary.
Up to you to imagine why the owl does not cut the rope ;)
Potato - For long post and bad english
It could also be interpreted as an abusive relationship.
The crow (abused or whatever you want to call it) is tethered and unable to free itself. While the Owl (abuser) sits and watches, knowing what's going on but lets it go on out of self interest.
There's a lot of ways one could take this video. That's how I take it. I've read a bunch of other interpretations and they're all good. Awesome video!
Yeah this is how I took it
Know its 7 years later but the lipstick is a give away😂
The owl (the abuser in your interpretation) couldn't have tied up the crow, lacking thumbs, but it watches without helping, yes. I think, the crow being the smarter of the two animals, must really be scared to not realize it needs to peck at the string to free itself. All the debris is coming through the window because there's been a bomb outside, and the owl will wait for calm, or night, to venture out.
Watching this video again and again gives me a different insight each time.
The first thing I noticed is how comparable the crow is to my own panic attacks. I relate with the owl in this video too, and it's almost as if the two are the head and tail of a coin. Why escape when I could stew in my own anger, when nothing interesting lies on the other side? Yet, I feel as if trying harder and harder might free me from these murky emotions. It could be as simple as cutting the string, but then, there would be no music.
The crow in the video is trying to escape the darkness and the waste that is being accumulated in it. However the owl although unteathered does not flee from the darkness but remains in it. This speaks to the universal phenomenon of escapism. Trying to transcend the dark and messy. Its ironic and oxymoronic those who can fly out of the darkness don't and those who can't fly out of it want to. There is a lot that relates to existsential depression In this video
+Jose Alejo my brother helped compose this song, you actually figure it out. im surprised to see this on ftwd
Yes...
Yet, it is the Crow that adds the music (vibrating string), even if he doesn't know it. The Owl does not create anything. A conscious Crow could use strings to be creative (aka. the Muse).
cool, interesting take on that. It would have been nice if the Owl would have snipped the tether so both birds could fly out. Then again, the Owl may enjoy the darkness and also be evil, or both. Kind of cruel if you think about it. Even more cruel is the human who locked these two in there....
You sound like you wrote that after having just smoked a G of fentynal my guy
I seriously need this to be longer. Awesome track, in love with it.
You're totally right, that's because owls are nice and soft. Several people dread these birds but I don't know why. They come in the dead of night. Are they dangerous?
fretui medak Only to their prey :P
You're in love with it. But.. You've chosen darkness.
woow.... this just blew my mind. its a master piece!
I deep dived my old external harddrive today about found a copy of this hidden away amongst random photos of my old apt, my daughter at birth and old memes. No memory of ever seeing this before but pleasantly surprised
One of the most beautiful videos and works of art I've seen
"We are trapped by the freedom to do anything in this life," - Welcome to Night Vale
"I saw something today. Something that horrified me... At first, I thought it was unnatural. I thought it was an aberration... But I was wrong... What I saw was prophesized. What I saw was godly. And I think it's overdue... I wish you were here but I will see you soon. And you will hold me. If you find this, I'm sorry... If you find this, I love you..." - Alicia Clark (Fear The Walking Dead).
That writer is saying everything that happened up until that point in the story was overdue. Mad.
This video is awesome. This band is awesome. I don't know how I ended up here, but i'm glad I did.
WOW ... Breathtaking
Such affliction coming from this incognitum character, but still, there's something to be learned here, something about the sorrow ways of such beings.
exactly... i found this long time ago and i think its pure perfection!
"I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness" - And I understand why
Yeah because the owl given up to come out the darkness.
Such a sad thing.
So powerful! Goosebumps
Stunning!
Chino Moreno showed me the light to this amazing band!
The meaning is simple as it is.
This is absolutely AMAZING, and I think it needs to be reuploaded in HD. It certainly deserves it, holy crap!
This isn't about people and "the man" - Or at least that isn't how I interperate it.
The Crow can represent anything or anyone, in a bad situation struggling for freedom (or towards a goal) The junk flying at it is the bullshit everyone faces keeping it down, stopping it from succeeding, and of course the string is the main reason it cannot escape its current situation.
The Owl is a representation of a person in the position to help them. At any moment The Owl could cut that string and set The Crow free.....
The thing about this song is that at one point in our lives, all of us will be both The Crow, and The Owl - and the video stops before it shows what The Owl does.
Does it stand and watch? Does it set The Crow free? What kind of Owl would you be? Who is your Owl when you are The Crow?
That is a really beautiful interpretation, DystruktoBoi1, best I've seen in three years..
I could SO do with an owl right now :(
Dude, really, thanks.
You're welcome. I see my idea my an impression on you.
You might feel you're the crow right now, but look around, maybe you need to be someones Owl and they will return the favor. You can be both at once too, it all depends on the situation.
DystruktoBoi1 or the owl could have been similar to the crow
but content with the darkness
content with it's dark pleasures
I look at it as a drug addict who doesn't seen a better life than being one
watching a fellow but different drug addict try to escape to a brighter way
but the owl doesn't care much about the crow since itself has given in to the darkness
hence the song title and the owls soulless eyes
It will be the kind of owl that eats the crow. In case you haven't noticed owl is a predator and crow is the prey which tries to escape before owl gets hungry.
this is fantastic
One of the best ever!
Beautiful video. Made me all sorts of anxious though.
Fear the walking dead brought me here and boy was it hard to find.
i agree,
it's hard to google or shazam?
FTWD was a good show. Too bad they ruined it
@@paveilmikhail3550 I agree
great to hear this used to such perfect effect on FTWD. I hope more people find it
The Owl: “You’re in My world now”
In My Humble Opinion...
I've read other interpretations, they're all really good, and I'll come with mine.
Crow is trying to escape from any situation you can place him in. Maybe, because of his fault, he is trapped in it, and the crow is trying to get out, while he is still able to do it. He could cut the string on his own, instead of flying forever to the way out. The Owl is some kind of a judge. Will there be any sense in saving the crow, by cutting the string and letting him to escape, if he may be trapped again in the same way? Or should Owl just help, just to do it? It's some kind of choice between sense and hope for something better. Some kind of existentialism or depression. Really good video, thanks.
Best band name ever. 💜
Excellent concept and execution.
I keep coming back to the imagery in this video. I've been planning on getting a tattoo based off of the theme. How I interpret it:
The crow is attracted to shiny, material things. They try to escape reality by pursuing what society tells us to -- shiny cars, lipstick, possessions--consumerism at its essence.
The owl doesn't care for any of this. It sits in the darkness and perceives reality with no need for escape. It has the power to cut the twine holding the crow back if it so chooses -- but won't, because the crow doesn't ask for help. The crow is too caught up in its escape and chase of material things.
The owl is free, but chooses to stay in reality. The crow is panicked, seeking freedom, but never asks for help or wisdom from others that would set it free.
Spooky and beautiful.
This track is better with the video than the original one. Brilliant sync.
If you remember the original I’d like to hear it again!
@@alabamanigga1838 Its been like 6 years ago, maybe it was fake video or they just used that tune for it, sorry. Can't find sh*t now.
Such a chilling song, love it. It added to the atmosphere of FTWD back in the day.
amazing.
The way I see it is that the crow represents people or society and the owl represents corporations. You have all this supposed "junk" flying towards the crow, but its products we use everyday. The crow us now caught in this junk and tries to fly out but it cant. The owl stays and watch the crow to make sure it stays caught. In other words, it is the man keeping us down with shiny objects
this spoke to me
For me, it simply represents a univocal love, the fear of being rejected ...
Bueno el primer comentario latino desde Uruguay , excelente animación retrata una relación tóxica y abusiva desde mi punto de vista, magistral muchas gracias por compartir
Wow...I JUST discovered this video the other night. I can't stop watching it. It's beautiful and it hurts my chest.
yet the most important truth about life provided by this vid is that owls are pretty badass!
This is what it means to me: Depression. We are the crow. Life forces us into roles and situations we despise, including obsessions over beauty, food/drink, and the allure of drugs and addiction. It's the real us, deep inside, struggling for a way out. The owl is Everyone Else. Everyone Else sits back, completely content with their lives or have ways of dealing with it. The owl watches the crow in silent judgment and perhaps even anger - why are you so unhappy? What's wrong? I don't understand how you could be this upset - and it is a neverending cycle. The crow is never free, nor content with what it has, but it never stops struggling for that window. The owl sees the crow as disturbing, just as anyone might, but the crow views the owl as even MORE disturbing. Think on that, would ya?
Anyway, philosophical babble aside, this song is fucking awesome
Pan Demona R u god
+Pan Demona it shows beauty = lipstick, food and drink = soda can openers (the things you flick to open it) and waste food (starvation) and drugs (you'll figure it out) but the other half, you're wrong. Its about depression, its the crow trying to escape darkness but cant, but the owl can but wont
If the owl has chosen darkness, does that mean it loves the crow?
I've been watching this video for years. Never thought to analyze the video. Here's my take.
First, it's darkness, then light, then the tether, then the crow. We're the Crow for some time. Trying to fly free into the light. Then life throws a bunch of trash at us as we continue that struggle for freedom. Eventually, we become the Owl. We accept the darkness. We thrive in it. We choose to observe others struggle, maintaining a relatively cold indifference.
Crows and owls hate each other. Why would I help you?
I love this
FTWD’s ending scene in the first season, fourth episode: Alicia reads the suicide note by Susan to Patrick; Travis saw the light his son told him and it ends by soldiers in the house.
Great sound ! I've just heard something else that I'm happy to suggest : The song "When I have fears that I may cease to be" by Nikö Laetailleurs. You can find it by copying-pasting *"When I have fears that I may cease to be (part 1) - Nikö Laetailleurs"* in the youtube search bar. Hoping my own feeling become yours...
It's like tv show intro 💯😍
I'm going to agree with an earlier comment I can't reply to: I see the crow as us all, struggling to find happiness in materialism/consumerism. The crow wishes to escape its current status. The light represents that which we believe will grant us happiness, the greener grass on the other side, maybe even heaven etc.
The light is also the source for all of these 'shallow' consumer products flying about.
The owl choses to remain calm, wise and somehow 'zen'. He observes the struggle, but seems content with his current position/status. He knows that the desire to want more is inherent to our being, that it is an endless cycle, and that we will never ever truly reach it if we attempt to achieve it in that way.
The way the products hit the crow does still make me doubt my view. They seem to hinder the crow from reaching the light. Maybe this could be explained as: they are ultimately bad for the crow. Furthermore the crow seems disinterested in these products. I have no explanation for this.
By reading this comment I think you made me understand this video. Good job. Great philosophy.
+Diego Rens Remember that true zen does not require that one abstain from material distractions, as doing so is an artificial deprivation, and motivated by ego. The owl is motivated neither by over or under indulgence :)
To add onto what you are saying - The owl doesn't appear tethered like the crow is. The crow thinks freedom is reaching the light, not realizing it needs to free itself from the rope. The owl knows this, and is therefore free and as you said "content with his current position/status". You can also view the owl is a sort of teacher as well - if the owl frees the crow, will the crow ever learn how to free itself? Etc.
I very much enjoy your theory!
it is beacuse when you reach what you want then it becomes empty.
This video makes me cry
Indeed
The sad part in this video is that crows are actualy smart enough to cut off a rope if they have to.
I can feel the despair
In the simplest of terms, I see The Owl as death. The Tethered Crow is every living creature with their ongoing struggle to survive, but the struggle cannot go on forever. It will exhaust itself eventually, slow and falter. And that is when the ever-watchful Owl will swoop in and claim it. Of course, that is simply my interpretation.
"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference."
aren't owls a "symbol of knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition"...
I interpreted this as humanity's struggle with sin. Trying to escape to the light while we deal with the crap we fall into. The owl to me is the enemy, silently stalking humanity, watching it struggle.
Sin is just a human construct.
@@VirtuelleWeltenMitKhan sure, if you don't believe in God that is. Sin is simply separating one self from God
That's how I saw it too. But it's nice to read other people's interpretations as well.
I'm getting Hotline Miami vibes from this track. Kinda reminds me of "SIlver Lights"/ both give off such chilling and sinister vibes
wow. great interpetation discussion. what i saw was i wanted the crow to break free, i wanted it to be able to fly free! and the owl could have helped the crow- he could have bit the string or something, but instead he just sat there and watched the crow suffer because the owl was creul. maybe the owl was the one who tied the crow up as some sort of revenge. i like jose's interpretation much better than mine. it is just what i saw
i was surprised to hear this in fear twd
Is there any indication that the owl isn't tethered as well?
The owl is tethered by choice.
Absolutely one of my all time favorite videos, shame that there's a little glitch exactly on the coolest part of the audio. I hope this will be fixed, did nobody notice this? even after all this time?
I don't think I can ever like owls again...
All valid/awesome comments aside.
I think it's possible the video could be totally ambiguous.
I find it interesting, that people find meaning in everything etc, a type of closure, when it could simply be an unfortunate bird caught in all our rubbish, while an owl checks him out, hypnotized by the bouncing rope/string.
I'm assuming owls don't rummage that much so the owl wouldn't make a mistake as to be tangled like the other bird is.
Not as imaginative I guess, just pondering.
You could go insane analyzing things like this.
Like does it focusing on the lipstick bring the relationship element into it?
Scumbag brain, bed time I think.
Thanks. :)
Сильно, сильно.
It's sort of getting stuck in an episode that you can't mentally get out of and you're drowning
thank you miles darius hoard you're an amazing blitzcrank and you're better than godward. you are godhand and bless you for your amazing taste in music
Fear The walking dead- not fade away...
+Mocktezuma111 lmao i heard it before and just heard it again on fear the walking dead too, This band needs exposure, it made me smile :)
+Mocktezuma111 Yep Fear The walking dead- bring me here too
So deep
Me too, because I chosen darkness.
The song is good, but the video is ...... so deep
Thoughts? The wise owl watches evil struggle. The crow is the dead returned. The Owl watches from its perch beyond life, while the crow struggles to be set free once more.
We are The crow, The owl is The elite who control us
The owl has a deep hatred for the crow. It could kill the crow but it prefers to see the crow suffer.
One Tree Hill brought me here. OTH FOREVER
+FallOutPanic! ! yeeeeeeeeeees

Is this part of a genre or is this a wholly unique sound?
The Owl is about to kill the Crow. It is just not hungry atm. And the Crow knows that.
some more now..
FTWD = Best show on TV.

You're most welcome :)
you've just re-worked the situation of the movie: the secret of nihm
Chino Moreno brought me here
i wanna rise
This has a kind of Boards of Canada vibe to it.
haha how?
I love BoC, but no, not really
this shit makes me stronger
Apparat - Arcadia
In Bird Culture, not helping a fellow bird is considered...a dick move.
part of it is like the darth vader breathing sound.
What happened to them ?
To me it represents religion. The crow is "you", tethered, fearful and desperate to do what you were born to do: fly. Religion is the tether preventing your freedom and escape through the open gap, and the owl represents religious leaders and gods; watching you struggle with cold indifference.
Some men just want to watch the world burn...
Keaze I suspect you took my comment (which I don't even remember writing) too literally.
I was clearly speaking in a rhetorical sense, and not personally.
Looks like the same artist that did the QOTSA videos
Why does this has the same video as Apparat - Arcadia?
Haha you came from the same place as me XD
I think the Apparat - Arcade video was fan-made. It says in the description that this video is the original.
stupid people stealing it for other songs, this is the original one
"Merhaba, yarattık cehennemi!"
Gonna be honest thought this was just the score to the show. It sounds very much like Fear The Walking Dead score
