Tjærebrenning: Hele prosessen/ Whole process

The tar project began in 2022 by the National Trust of Norway and Riksantikvaren (The Directorate for Cultural Heritage) with a goal of preserving the traditional and thousand-year-old craftsmanship of tar burning for present and future generations.
Tar burning is earthy - and at the same time pure magic: Old, dry tyri roots are transformed into hot, flowing tar within a few hours. In Magnus Lagabøte's Landslov from 1274, farmers were required to apply tar on Norway´s stave churches every three years. Some of these buildings are still standing, and there is no reason to change such a well-proven conservation method. Riksantikvaren has decided that only traditional mile burnt tar should be applied on the country's medieval buildings.
