Loved this story by the great Arthur C. Clarke! Talk about the ultimate fear... alone and lost on an alien planet and pursued by a phantom! First rate story telling!

Damned, but those jazz instruments being tuned in the background are aggravating.

Then read the short story and stop whining about something that has been provided to you at no cost, you ingrate.

@@fuzzywzhe I believe "Bite off!" is the appropriate reply. If you enjoy the noise in the background then leave a post encouraging more of it to the poster of the story. It is an annoyance to me so don't expect my support, but you may also be assured that I will not be so petty as to leave disparaging comment on it simply because I feel so entitled that I believe my opinion should mean something to you.

@@jamespeden9472 *"I believe "Bite off!" is the appropriate reply. If you enjoy the noise in the background then leave a post encouraging more of it to the poster of the story."*
This is a radio show that played between 1976 and 1984. The person that made this available to you, is curtesy of the narrator of the series, Michael Hansen.
Mindwebs covered a GREAT number of very famous science fiction authors that were around between the 1940's and most of the stories are from the 1950's and 1960's, the so-called "golden age" of science fiction.
*"It is an annoyance to me so don't expect my support, but you may also be assured that I will not be so petty as to leave disparaging comment on it simply because I feel so entitled that I believe my opinion should mean something to you."*
Oh no, because your comment to me was *anything* but that..
I called you an ingrate properly. It doesn't mean you're stupid, which a lot of people seem to think it does, it simply means you're ungrateful, and you are.
The world doesn't exist to serve you, especially a classic series like this that is now about 40 years old. You're like a child complaining about how you don't like something in the Twilight Zone and you insist it be changed, or you're going to withdraw your support!
Yeah, well.. good luck with that.

@@fuzzywzhe what part of "Bite off!" are you having trouble with? I did not ask for changes, I did not say I would no longer listen to the channel, or offer Thumb Down. I simply expressed my opinion on the background noise, as did other commenters. Why you chose my comment to spew over I do not know, nor do I care. You mean nothing to me, your views hold no importance for me. You could have left a separate comment with your blather, but you chose to snipe on mine. Petty and entitled seem fitting lables for you, as your reply to me further demonstrates. Just go away, or, better still, "Bite off!"

@@jamespeden9472 *"what part of "Bite off!" are you having trouble with?"*
I'm not having a trouble with it. I just don't care what you want me to do.
It is apparent to me you have no idea that this is a 40 year old classic radio series, done in the day when the radio was basically dead as an entertainment medium.
      Saying, and I quote:
*"It is an annoyance to me so don't expect my support,"*
      Then saying:
*"I did not ask for changes, I did not say I would no longer listen to the channel, or offer Thumb Down."*
      Is odd.
Please specify by what you mean by "my support".
*"I simply expressed my opinion on the background noise, as did other commenters."*
Yeah, they are whiney ingrates as well.
*"Why you chose my comment to spew over I do not know, nor do I care."*
      Randomly.
*"You mean nothing to me, your views hold no importance for me."*
What views have I expressed? And I mean nothing to you? Oh no.
*"You could have left a separate comment with your blather, but you chose to snipe on mine."*
Yeah, I simply picked you at random. I'm just annoyed that people keep complaining about somebody that was made 40 years ago and is provided for free. You don't have to listen to this. You can read the stories if you prefer.
*"Petty and entitled seem fitting lables for you, as your reply to me further demonstrates. Just go away, or, better still, "Bite off!""*
      I'll do what I please.

Brought back memories of a "creature" the Guamanians feared when I was there in the 60's. And the night that "Something" jumped over an 18 foot fence at one of the most crucial security complexes and 2 Marine guards fired several rounds each at it. about 2 hr later, several women and children saw "it" or another like it in the parking lot of the PX about 2 miles away. When these reports reached command at main Navy, They had the Marine Div dispatch 4 jeeps to seek and destroy it if they could find it. Each jeep had 3 men. One driver and 2in the back each with 12 Ga riot guns with instructions shoot to kill.
No one was ever sure what it had been. If it hadnt been for the thing leaping over the 18 foot chain link fence in the dark and 2 Corporals actually firing live rounds at it, it could've been passed off as imagination but....
And i remember one night walking (about 2 miles distance ) from the barracks to my work building, and the old Guanamian guy stopping in his pickup truck and refusing to budge til I accepted a ride from him because of his fear for me from whatever terrified them. ???

Awesome short story from one of my favorite authors with a great reader, but it was almost ruined by the background noise. Can't call it music, more a cacophony that I had to work hard to ignore. From the sound of it, whoever was doing the sound design for this back in the day should have taken a bit less ketamine. Seriously, sounds from the k-hole there. The tone of this story would have been better served by silence, or a quiet recording of footsteps on gravel
