In this video I discuss what my thoughts are regarding 3D printing for scale modelling and how useful having your own printer is

    My take on this subject:
If you build kits out of the box (maybe with some 3rd party addons), and just put it on a shelf to display, you really don't need a 3d printer.
But, for those who are making dioramas and do some kit bashing, a 3d printer is a great tool to have.

A really useful video Jason. I'm a bugger for having all the gear but this has confirmed what I was thinking - just no payback for the average aircraft scale modeller. So much good stuff out there to buy already.

I have been modelling for years but never been near a 3D printer. There seem to be some out there who can design and print stuff to super detail their models. I am old school and scratch build stuff from plastic. I am with you on metal tracks as they behave very realistically on models and add a nice bit of weight. I recently built the Takom Chieftain and got tracks from the far east which weren't too expensive. I think you need to be rich or very set on 3D printing to buy all the stuff and software to do full on own design 3D printing.

Very, very helpful video. Especially in the latter part where you mirror my concerns and questions about whether or not to get a 3D printer for exactly the same purposes mentioned. So thank you.

The more I watch 3d printing demos ,the more I realise I don’t need one ,,, great review Jason

You made taking the prints off the build plate look like hard work

After 60 years of building I myself see no need for one. I maybe old but it gives me more satisfaction when basic materials and my hands produce a part versus pushing a button.

Thinking about buying a 3 d printer but am a little worried about the learning curve.

Don't forget there's also plenty of full 3D printable models that are not available in plastic. That's what I'm printing pretty much. Just for detail parts, I agree with you, there's not a whole lot of use.

Yes good point and I printed many Spanish vehicles myself, I should have mentioned some of that 👍

Having had a filament printer for a few months now I just couldn't be bothered with the faffing around with resin. Appreciate the quality though.

The clean vat feature waste so much resin i never use it i just filter it in a bottle or use my extra vat then strain it in that

yes, i 3d prints the little stuff like stowage and tracks. Dont have the patience to print the larger stuff. Supporting them and not knowing how they would turn out kills the mojo
