Thank you Ralfy... great recommendation 👍 I just got mine 43% in States
For a Chill-filtered 40% whisky.. Its a flavour blast! Really love this one. Cheers!
The cost of gas is set by the international market just like oil. It doesn’t matter if the gas comes from Russia or not. It’s still bought from the same open market.
Edradour is so old school I think they're the only distillery (along with Glenfarclas) that I can almost tolerate lower abv on, since it's how a lot of older malts were presented anyway, making the abv almost a byproduct of their wonderfully old-fashioned attitude to whisky making. Higher would be better, but it's still good.
Also crucially, they have the good sense to make alternative versions available too if you want to pay more, it's more fan-focused rather than the take-it-or-leave-it attitude of unaccountable large distilleries.
“How many low-mark reviews would you be wanting???” Ralfy, you da best and there is no substitute for you mate
Always seen the entry 10 as a path to the rest of the range rather than a destination in itself - but it's rewarding in its own right. Excellent review 👍
I really like Edradour, I've had a number of their whisky's now, although I've found that they all have the same thing in common, the finish, it's all very abrupt and ends far too quick, which is strange because the smell and the initial taste is excellent. Edradour fairy flag is one the best nose's I've ever experienced and the taste is lovely but again the finish is over before it starts, it's so blizzare for such a high quality whisky.
Edradour... one of my absolute favorites! Love the raw, authentic, and unadulterated base spirit.
It's hard to get too annoyed with Edradour for watering down their entry level 10yo when they also do Signatory branded 10yo that's 46% & unchillfiltered, not to mention their marvelous Caledonia 12yo. My minor gripe with Edradour isn't that they punt out their entry level stuff at 40%, it's that most of their older expressions are only available at cask strength & corresponding price tag. It's common to tell distilleries they should be more like Springbank, but in the case of Edradour that means diluting Ballechin 15 down to 46% & selling it a bit cheaper!
And quite the price tag they put along side!
Edradour's been one of my go-to alternatives during the J&A Mitchell drought (which fortunately seems to be abating slightly now). From the way their prices keep going up & up, I have to assume that's also been true of quite a few other sippers &/or flippers! They need to be a bit careful about how far they can push the price though. Signatory Edradour 10yo is nice enough, but it's up against stuff like North Star Supersonic Mach 2, which is a similar style of sherry bomb, 50%abv & still available for just over £40 from UK online retailers.
Having said all that, I still reckon Ballechin 15 is a hidden gem if you can get it for £100-ish. It'll take plenty of water & if you dilute it down to 46% it works out as a similar price to Tamdhu 15 & goes toe-to-toe with that pretty convincingly IMHO.
Gr8 points!
Is the Signatory 10 yr any good , if you've tried it ?
It's good, but I prefer the Caledonia 12yo. If you like Edradour & you're looking at Signatory, also consider their Mortlach 12yo (£50 from MoM in the UK). I found it benefitted from getting past the neck pour & then leaving on the shelf for a month or two though.
Ah, what joy to see Edradour appear in The Bothy again! Standard 10yo was my first Edradour. Have had countless bottlings since and absolutely loved the vast majority of them whether it's the cask strength 12 year old, standard 12 Caledonia or those wonderful 10 year old signatory bottles. Something about their spirit and how it interacts with the sherry casks are right up my street. Just a slight pity (as someone else commented) that their older bottlings are so expensive. Would love a standard 15 year old in the range.
Aye the sherry cask ones are my absolute favourites too! Got hooked after doing the tour a few years ago!
@@RossTallo the tour is definitely on my list of places to visit and do in the near future!
@@mincey808 it's a lovely wee place, so picturesque! They may still have a bar there where you can try a dram of some expensive whisky at reasonable prices. I might need to have another visit this autumn 😊
Thanks Ralfy! I got an email a few days back from the whisky shop where I live in Christchurch, New Zealand that they have the Edradour 10 newly in stock. One look at the bottle and I remember the distillery when I was staying in Pitlochry back in 2004. I picked up my bottle of Edradour 10 yesterday and searched to see if you had done a video on it yet, and 24 hours later here you are with one! I'm going to wait a couple of weeks and open it on my birthday. As I'm reaching the ripe old age of 41 I have only started drinking whisky this year. Back in 2004 I didn't have much of an interest in whisky, but I did appreciate the history behind it so I feel a slight personal connection to Edradour Distillery. I look forward to this bottle and I'll watch your video over again whilst drinking my first dram.
Thank you so much for this particular review I absolutely love Edradour distillery particularly 12-year-old Caledonia. Being such a small distillery putting out such beautiful stuff it's amazing, it's nothing man widely available in the United States I had three bottles and I have two backups only one out of them I purchased in the United States. 10-year-old is more available but still most of people have no idea what it is. This is a perfect example of a bottle you might pay a little bit more but it's totally worth it. Lot of huge producers should learn something he does not have to be smooth it has to be good.
yes, 12-year-old Caledonia is an amazing bottle!! love it!!
The 12 Caledonia is one of my favourite whisky. It really is a beauty
My gateway into the world of single malt. Loved the richness and complexity of flavor. Glad to purchase it at 43% in the US. Just picked up a bottle of Signatory Edradour unchilled filter collection and looking forward to exploring this one. Hope that your review doesn't make the standard Edradour more expensive or harder to come by, although I do appreciate that this bottle gets the credit that (IMO) deserves. Thanks.
At a friend's house, has a small bottle of this, loved it then checked ralfy out, agreed wholesale here. Great whisky
As a person who just started my journey into the world of Whiskey, Ralfy you are the absolute best mentor! Always something new, entertaining and informative. Thank you sir for your time & effort.
Thanks for the review Ralfy. I’ve seen this malt on the shelves here in the US but never stopped to really research it. I guess the 40% bottling strength and chill filtration made it easy to pass up for a Deanston or Bladnoch. Both of which I really have been enjoying lately. I will be picking up a bottle of Edradour in the near future to give it a try. With prices being what they are today your right on the mark about seeking out a quality malt that won’t disappoint.
Thanks Ralfy
Great video, just bought a wee 200ml bottle for a friend. Got excited about it myself now. Thanks from Sweden!
What a great channel to find, thank you! Love Edradour.
Good stuff Ralfy, here to learn. I always like it when you remind us to keep it responsible.
Love Edradour, especially the sherry finished unchillfiltered versions. I highly recommend reading the 'Edradour - The Myth, The Mafia & The Magic' book, it has a very interesting history!
Yes Ralfy Edradour is a legit no bullshit distillery. The 10, Signatory un-chill filtered, straight from the cask are proper malts. And the old 15 fairy flag was a beautiful drop. I get a bottle of the Ibisco decanter every other year. I'm a happy man with Edradour taking prominent place on my bar . Cheers Ralfy 👍
My new favorite channel! I stepped away from scotch when I was younger. The last time I bought a bottle of scotch It was a bottle of Dalwinnie 15 for $59.00 now it’s $99.00. I’m looking for those $50/$60 bottles to enjoy and a few $99.00 like the Springbank you mentioned in another video. I picked that up yesterday and I’ll wait to open it. I do enjoy the sherry cask now I need to learn when to add a little water or just enjoy without it.
This is widely available in Australia at a good price so I’m a supporter. I also really enjoy the whisky so it’s a win, win. 😁
The 12 year old Caledonia is in my opinion the better option regarding Edradour. And it’s bottled at 46%. Non chill filtered.
I found this bottle on special for 70 Aud dollars and its one of my favorites from the malted sherry nose to the palate its delicious, the finish is bitter oranges and chocolate its very nice. Needless to say it hasn't lasted long because its so tasty. I also have the Caledonia and its even more intense and delicious. Good score and a good malt cheers Ralfy
Ralfy, I congratulate you on your exceptional storytelling skills. At least a 1/3 of a whiskey’s enjoyment is tied to its history.
Like the packaging on this one - old-school and traditional. Lovely stuff!
Thanks Ralfy, will keep an eye out for it 👍
Ralfy l got a bottle for my 60th birthday. A good friend bought it from Scotland to me in Canada.
Injoy your videos
Great Whiskey
We get Edradour in Texas. The 10, Caledonia 12 and two single-cask versions (madeira, ribera del duero) I've tried have been fantastic. The spirit is super meaty and bold, but it takes on sweet flavors from sherry/wine very well. One of my favorite distilleries, and I learned about it here first. 😉 Thanks for the info, Ralfy. Cheers!
I've been avoiding purchasing a bottle of Edradour 10 for a number of years now. There were some good reviews for this malt a while back, but there were also more than a few reviewers who reported a disappointing experience. I recall one of them saying that it needed to air out for up to six months after opening before the nose and flavors came into balance. I'll let a bottle air out for 4 to 6 weeks, but six months is just a bridge too far! So, I have continued to pass this one by. It's sort of like that scene in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" where he's rescuing animals from the burning pet shop, and he continues to avoid the snakes until they're the only creatures left in the shop - that's sort of where I'm at with Edradour. Perhaps it's finally time to dash in there and grab those snakes! Thanks for the review, Ralfy!
had to go into my collection to remind myself of the 25 yr port finished Edradour, thanks for that Ralfy.
Love Edradour, have been buying it for the past 10 years. At least, here in Massachusetts USA, the 10 year old is 43% ABV. Here's hoping for 46%...
This definitely a keeper. Reminds me of Glendronach 15 but much cheaper and natural color. Fond one lonely bottle in Oklahoma. Came a long way to be duly appreciated. Cheers brother!
Sir, I do own this bottle and I do enjoy it immensely! I have to agree though with the lower ABV the beautiful arrival disappears quickly.
I just wish I could find more expressions in my area. Cheers my friend.
Ralfy, I asked you sometime ago for a review of this one and you responded that you were getting around to it. Thank you for coming through. I really enjoy this malt and was interested to hear your thoughts on it being 40 abv and chill filtered. A fair, honest review as usual. Cheers
I'm sat in my comfy chair in Tasmania sipping on a freshly opened Edradour 10, while watching your review. As usual you are spot on, what a delightful drop very Savoury and morish, a very nice Christmassy dram....
Preach the energy transformation debacle, brother...just pray that sane minds will prevail. Sad state that we will see what happens in the next year or two and hope its not for the worse. Whiskey prices will not come down - trying to judge carefully and buy what I can now. Also hope that all of Europe will be safe this winter, as you can only warm temporarily with the water of life. Cheers!
Watching this cos I just opened a bottle. In my opinion, the neck-pour, at least, is to other single malts what rye is to bourbon. This is a minty one! And not necessarily easy. And very rich. I imagine I will likely grow to like this one a lot, but I could see things going the other way, as well.
We bought an Edradour released under Signatory based on your information. Can't wait to open it and expand my whiskey palate. Cheers!
Congrats on getting it
Hi Ralfy; I have shied away from this bottle for two reasons ; bottled at 40% and the cost. Where I live (Alberta , Canada) it is a $95 bottle and there are other choices in this price range which are competent quality malts. If this was minimum 46% , NCF, and in the $70 range it would be a no brainer and a 91 malt mark IMO.
Looking for a 46% NCF whiskey for $70 might just be a teensy bit optimistic.
@@sav7568 Arran 10 $67
Glen Garioch 12 $55
Ledaig 10 $68
Deanston 12 $69
Not sure where you are located @sav I can only speak for my local market. If these " integrity" malts are considerably more expensive where you are the fault lies with the retailer or your provincial/state government. Worse case scenario is if your retailer is government run and supplied like the LCBO in Ontario. By the way I am a fan of Edradour and have access to 6 or 7 of their official bottlings and they do not disappoint. They challenge and walk a different path than most single malts; cheers!
Greeting Mr Ralfy, I wanted to buy this bottle last year when it was $65, last week I checked it was $96 which is silly, prefer to get ot if it goes on sales or simply add a few more bucks and get something else but thanks for the review I think I put it on my buy list last time you reviewed it. Love your love twchnolog 😁😁
One of my favorite bottles. I'm able two find it in Iowa (middle of America) a couple times a year.
Edradour has been one of my favorite for years now. The 10 is just lovely. It’s is sadly on the more expensive side, but that’s just part of living in my part of the US. The Caledonia is also amazing. Cheers!
Good to hear your thoughts. I enjoy this, but it is priced a bit high. I hope, one day, prices will slide down a bit. Cheers!
Theres a soft place in my heart for eddie , ive got something like 6 or 7 expressions which is a good chunk of my collection (190) bottles ive got a bottle from most distilleries where only one expression might feature. As for bourbon, the cask strength edradour bourbon is pretty lovley but the sauturns was always one of my top 10 whiskys along with arran 25 , springbank 18 glen cadam 13 and deanston palo cortardo 12.
HA! Shocked me a bit with the Cadam. I love the 13, and it's very peculiar and rebellious. 15 might by my personal fav, but the 10 and 18-21 are grrat to amazing. But it's just rare for someone to point at the 13. I'm intrigued... what makes it so for you? Say over the 14 amd Amy other? It lives in a world it's own, for sure - and I respect that.
@@geo5291 i just love there are flavours that stand out , butterscotch and mint.
@ DJ Scottdog Thank you!!!
"You won't taste anything else like it!"
That's exactly what we whisky adventurers love to hear.
Edradour is fairly common to find in the US at larger liquor stores, but it’s typically expensive for the age compared to many comparable brands. Which has made me swerve them in favor or better prices brands. Hopefully they get better penetration into the US market and with it better pricing.
Visited the distillery in 2010, the first distillery I ever visited. I didn’t like what was on offer then, but what’s coming out of the distillery now is impressive.
i bought a bottle of Edradour 10 bottled at 43%. It's magnificent, really surprised how good the finish is on this and mouthfeel for it only being 43%. It's a bit expensive for what is it though, a 700ml bottle for $87 is a lot imo. However is so good, I'd buy it again but it would be a INCREDIBLE malt if it was around $60.
Great work as always. Thank you. I haven't yet tried Edradour, but this review put it on my buy list. I recently found it at $62.00 (+tax), so I'm taking the plunge!! Its worth noting that through. your reviews, I've moved away from my previous total Islay focus.. Glendronnach, Glenellachie, Arran, Benriach.. This has been a successful experiment. I can't find Glen Allachie anywhere.. Thanks!!
update: well.. sweet, oloroso, rummy, not spirity, Yes to the vintage Christmas cake/pudding, not the slightest bitter on my tongue. Sherry simple and abrupt? yes. Gingery? not to me. At the risk of being barred from the site - it's like a slightly better composed version of "Naked Malt". Let's see what it's like in a couple of days with some air over the liquid.... hmm.
OK - so. Well. What a difference a day (or 10) makes... Let's start by using our superskill of "paying attention". Proper tasting glass, about 30 mins for the nose to develop in the glass. A little "Ralfy Roll Around". Eyes: dark golden-brown, pretty well-held color to the rim, legs from the Ralfy-roll, but not climbing the glass. Nose: raisin, ORANGE, glacé cherries, baking spices, lightly spirity, soft, warm and yes, all around Christmas cakey; no smoke, no peat. Mouth: warm, more spirity, sweet but not cloying, very front-of-mouth, a little pepper maybe, sherry as an underlay not as an add-on, generally a medium-short finish, but the spirits-peppery lingers a while. Mea Culpa. Will buy another for the harsh post-retirement days looming soon.
I love this one. I still need to do a battle between this one and the glendronach 12.
One of my absolute favourite distilleries, 10 is nice and Caledonia 12 sits on top of my whisky ranking list. Being a small distillery there seems to be bit of a batch variation, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
Thanks for revisiting Edradour 10. I really like it even it has only 40 percent abv. I hope that they will come up with 46 percent in the future. I also had a sample of the Edradour Caledonia 12 years which is even better. Need to try the Ballechin next. Cheers from Germany and remember to keep it quality and not quantity
They do under the Signatory label. Single cask at 46% and unchillfiltered.
I do like Glenfiddich (12) very much but I was thinking about trying the Edradour...
Hopefully I wouldn't be disappointed.
I chose between Edradour 10 and Glenfarclas 12, both of which sound good on paper...
My favorite dram with 40% ABV :-D Good to see you have good taste, Ralfy lol
Just got a bottle so I have no opinion yet, the real reason for this writing is to say how jealous I am you have your smelling abilities. Covid ruined my smeller 🤣🤣 it's ever so slowly returning....VERY SLOWLY...and as a pipe smoker and Scotch and Bourbon lover it's been a long year. Thankfully my tasting ability wasn't as hard hit.
Hope to see you reviewing the “straight from the cask” version also.
I was done buying 40% bottles, but found an excellent deal on this and had to pull the trigger. Never had an edradour before, at least I can check the character of the distillery before committing to more expensive bottles (the Caledonia is double the price here). It can't arrive soon enough.
I recently bought their Ballechin 10 YO. It's (very) peated, bottled at 46% and a wonderful dram.
Like said in the comments, at a very good price, the Signatory Vintage bottling of Edradour at 46% is the real deal (un-chill filtered, no added coulour, mention of age)
Signatory also do an un chill-filtered version of this which i believe has been reviewed here. Its fantastic and was the whisky that started my journey.
My core 6 single malts are Arran 10, Balveine 12 Double Wood, Bunnahabhain 12, Clynelish 14, Dalwhinnie 15 and Edradour 10. They all fit my budget and satisfy my single malt itch. Cheers!
I'm generally more of a bourbon drinker, but Edradour 10 is pretty easily my favorite scotch I've had so far. I really wish it was easier to find here and I really hope I can find some other offerings from their distillery sometime in the near future.
I bought one of these in 2020 and I had all those reactions that you mentioned at the end there. I see our stores have it again so I think I'll give it another shot. I'm pretty sure I blended some of that 2020 bottle with other malts.
In the two years since I last had this one, either my tastes have changed or the whisky has changed or my memory of what I last thought of it has faded. Really enjoying it with no complicated feelings this time. I'm getting a bit of a Bunnahabhain vibe from it.
Forgot to mention - it's bottled at 43% ABV here in the US.
Just opening my bottle in Aalsmeer The Netherlands
Edradour at 46% would be grand!
Years ago i did not get bottle of Edradour 10 because of sedatives, are you sure it is chill filtered?
I like this one as well.
I have seen polarising reviews for the distillery. But i have tried a wee sample of Ballechin few weeks ago and its marvelous. I dont get the bad reviews really.
I visited the Edradour distillery near Pitlochry in 2001 and bought a bottle of the 10 year old. I’ve kept it unopened.
Edradour Caledonia is a Must Try.
I normally dislike peated whisky however the Edradour Ballechin cask strength is one I prefer over the 40% unpeated one.
Happy I'm not alone worrying about how energy is going to hit distilleries. 'Happy' isn't the right word but you get what I mean.
We got the Eddy 10 in again recently and I decided to give it another whirl. The ABV doesn't do it many favours but it speaks to the DNA of the whisky that it can still come through, bruised and bloodied, but still swinging.
Signatory unchill filtered bottlings are the epitome of presentation and we should be eternally grateful for the opportunity to indulge in a naturally presented Scottish spring watered down whisky.
My 2007 vintage is a tremendously complex dram.
A bottle of this is about the same price as the 46% and I just can't do it. Score of 87 or 91 I just can't.
@@jackthepickledhound I still have borderline erotic dreams about my cask 79 bottling from a few years ago.
I just picked a Edradour 10 year and its 43%. Did they up the proof?
Time for another Edradour in the near future 😃
interesting and tasty bottling. But to watered down for me. This made me curious over edradour though. Normaly i for the most part only dring Cask strenght, maybe why it feels to watered down no?
If it's between two rivers it's a Mesopotamian malt
👌👍
I've heard Garioch 12 getting called a character whisky as well, one that i love. How does the Edradour compare? Also Ralphy, spot on about whisky purchasing, my own collection has slowed down considerably, new bottles have to be worth it. No longer am I willing to take a gamble on an unknown entity.
Glen Garioch 12 is a bit sweeter than Edradour, and not quite as yeasty, but they're similar enough that if you like one you'll almost certainly appreciate the other. I don't know how widely available it is, but here in the UK you can sometimes find Edradour 10 in a 20cl bottle, which is very cute & less of a hefty investment.
Omg! Big Ed, my baby! I don't have any...class had a dram at a Philadelphia restaurant 3 months ago, b4 that it was bw 2 n 4 years!
It's very expensive for only 10 years, 40% AVB ,chill filtered, not natural color. but it's delicious !!
I've managed to try a great many whiskies since 2020 (and most of them on your recommendation). Been interested in Edradour for a while but, like I've seen others say, put this one off because of the 40% bottling 🤣
That said, this review has put me on the path to a 46% bottling, either the 12 or the latest Signatory 10. Any nuggets of wisdom on this pair? I expect either is probably going to be a good dram.
I've dug out your reviews of them! Will give them a watch 👍🏻
The Edradour website sells the 10 in both regular and non chill filtered form. Might be interesting to do a direct side by side comparison of the effects of chill filtration! Annoyingly the non chill filtered is a full 50% more expensive than the regular.
. . . I'm on to it.
You mention Jura. I recommend the 18 year old because it's very big, unusual for Jura.
It is 44% and coloured but it is very cheap for an eighteen year old.
. . . It is very cheap for an 18yo, and it still sells very slowly. Under a different owner, . . . this distillery would sparkle and shine.
Quick question for Ralfy and/or the community, what is your go to online retailer for sourcing independent bottles? I want to start my collection slowly but surely using Ralfy’s reviews as a base :)
. . .shop around, prices vary.
Please Ralfy don’t do it, I don’t want it to disappear from shelves or jump in prices. I love Edradour and it’s still managed to fly under the radar - if you big it up it’s going to go the same way as Springbank, that is to say impossible to find.
👍👍
The Caledonia is a fantastic powerfull dram but getting too expensive at $125 Cdn ! Thank God for the 10 years old at $80 Cdn ! I have no doubt that despite the 40% apv , it's a suberb value ! That is the only 40% I would buy ever ! At 46% the Caledonia is Too much ,I,ve to add water !
Speaking of Kilchoman, what has happened to them? When the first 3yo whisky was launched everyone was raving about another peated whisky Islay distillery and yet nowadays Kilchoman hardly gets a mention.
The last Signatory NCF I bpugwas absolutely terrible. The entire experience is dominated by a beef top Ramen note that completely wrecks it for me. It's rare that I'm disappointed in a Signatory product, but right now the Edradour bottlings are on probation.
Any particular reason why you went for the 10yo instead of the Caledonia?
On top of what ive said it seems odd for them to only chill filter one product they must be sending it off for bottling and doing the rest in house
Ralfy, have you or would you review the Compass Box range of whisky's?
. . . next year !
@@ralfydotcom Thanks Ralfy, I look forward to your take on what i find is a great range, and an innovative company.
If there's all that going on in the bottle, then why oh why do Edradour chill-filter this whisky Ralfy??
Just think how good this could be if it was a full on integrity malt - must admit though, it's been on my radar for a while now. Cough.....perhaps a suggestion to Mrs.T for Christmas 😉😁.
none of the Edradour is chill filtered and the 10 year is 43%ABV and not chill filtered
What’s up with the colour?
OK, Amazing dark color from Sherry cask. But no sign on the label about color added. What’s up with that?
I have a bottle of the 10 at 43% and on the back of the tin is NATURAL COLOUR.
Wow remarkeble 88pts for a whisky bottled at a humble 40% abv. Who saw that coming?
