I did not expect to see you here.
I’d like to see a sapi plate mold that you could make a plate purely out of flex seal

All these youtubers using it in their videos.
As Seen on TAOFLEDERMAUS, lol

So spalling is when a projectile or blast wave impact an armor plating causing the opposite side of the impact to break apart and become fragmentation. The effect that you were trying to stop is primary fragmentation, the projectile breaks apart into smaller and sometimes more hazardous pieces that continue to have down range effects. Go forth with new knowledge!
1BoneChip1
It’s spalling.
Spall means to break up into chips or pieces.
If the bullet shatters, the smaller pieces are spall.
If a DU round punches through amor, the shards or amor and of the round are both spall.
Negative on your last ghost rider, although you are quite right on my spelling error. When it comes to ordnance the act of a projectile coming from together is fragmentation. Spall by the oxford dictionary is as you described and you are correct in referring to the small pieces from the armor as spall. That being said spall is strictly limited to the effects generated by the armor receiving some kinetic energy transfer from an impact or blast wave. When in doubt, 60 series out!
@@otetechie Incorrect:Spalling and spallation both describe the process of surface failure in which spall is shed from a larger body of material. Technically spalling would be the plate shedding metal.
Even the plate manufacturers get it wrong, and keep misinforming the public.
Jon L but the fragments from the projectile came from a larger body of material as well
@@1BoneChip1 They don't get it. Maybe they should look at a squash head round. Its designed to create spalling.
I think you could massively improve the coating by adding some sort of weave to it as a reinforcing matrix, like fiberglass or a simple medical bandage.

Our armor isn’t rubber coated (line-x etc). Our plates are compressed ceramic w Kevlar on top followed by some padding on top. It’s rated to stop a 7.62mm M-80 ball. Made by Ceradyne, inc. We tested it in Iraq during the 1st deployment and it would stop 3 M16 (5.56mm) rounds. After 3 it was toast, but any round bigger than that you better hope that you only get it once (or not at all of course lol) or get lucky if you get hit twice! Also, we had to change out our plates every so often because the integrity of the ceramic would easily get compromised because the corners of the plates would start to crack and crumble and spread towards the middle of the plate.
seems like ceramic plates are a bit of a waste since you can only get hit one or 2 times
They must have made some serious advances because I never saw that in my time in. After 2008. The newer ones seem to hold together much better. They can take quite a few rounds now. As long as they dont stack on the same spot.
MWB Gaming If you’re getting hit more than that you’re doing something wrong, and you’ll probably be out of commission anyways. I know a guy who took an AK round to the chest in Afghanistan. Broken ribs and a basketball sized bruise. Got a Purple Heart out of it. 1 will pretty much put you out of the fight; 3 or 4 sounds excruciating.
The ceramic is a byproduct of the military's obsession with Level IV. While it sounds great and all, Level III is sufficient for nearly all tasks (besides stopping AP, but true AP still isn't particularly prevalent due to cost), and most have MUCH better multi-hit capabilities.
It's a bit of a pick your poison type thing.
@@HaqqAttak sounds like he is describing the old school SAPI plate. They upgraded to the E-SAPPI sometime before joined in 2007. The plates are much more durable and can eat rifle rounds.
you’re correct. Everyone commonly misuses the terms. Splatter/splash is when the projectile does not penetrate an object. The round breaks apart and takes the path of least resistance creating bullet splash or splatter. Spalling is when the projectile penetrates an object and the material the projectile penetrates is projected forward creating spalling.
Bullet fragmentation is the bullet breaking up; spalling is when metal on the reverse side of the armor breaks off without the projectile penetrating.
Both can be bad in the context of a chest plate, but anti-spalling is particularly important on tanks, because the energy required to create spalling is roughly constant with armor thickness; against heavy armor it’s easier to design projectiles to create spalling that kills the crew than to design projectiles that penetrate.

Would be interesting to see how it performed in a carrier. Pretty sure the nylon would have helped things out even more.
I wonder what would happen if you added a bunch of fiberous material with each layer of flex seal............something like burlap or God willing.....kevlar threads. That would be interesting
awesome idea! akin to fiberglass but flexible
Yes, exactly. I always write my ideas before looking at others, my suggestion was a layer of card board. But I’m cheap and don’t know where to get a supply of Kevlar threads?
Amazon - look for "kevlar thread" - 50 yards for $3.75 USD. Plus $5 for shipping unless prime.
Carbon fiber in each layer crossing the gran on each layer . 7 or 8 layers wrapping 2 inch around to the backside.
That would be like super pykrete.

The technical therm is indeed "spalling".
"Spall" is something that breaks off something solid usually due to impact. Also applied to mining (spalling ore = breaking it into smaller pieces) and armored warfare.
The ethymology of "splashing" reminisce about something liquid. As in, splashing canvas with paint.

spalling is when the opposite side of a plate from the impact point fragments due to the impact on the other side. For example in ww1 tank crews wore chain mail masks because even though rifle bullets couldn't penetrate the armor, the brittle steel plate used would send metal splinters into the fighting compartment when impacted on the outside by a high velocity projectile. The interiors of some more recent tanks are lined with kevlar to prevent this.
I like that you display proper range safety. Clearing weapon .ETC. Thanks LM

Taofledermouse,
Can you do the car tyre silencer myth?
Supposedly shooting down the centre of a dozen tires works as a silencer for high power rifles.
It does and it would be considered a NFA item. You would put insulation inside the tire to help control and slow the gas from bouncing off as fast.
I'd like to see that too. Perhaps a shotgun slug loaded subsonic.
It's what most hitmen carry with them.
@Random Name wrong its a silencer look it up
@Random Name
Silencer, suppressor, moderator or can, call them what you like! I go with silencer, because thats what the inventor called it,not because they actually fully "silence" a firearm.

I like that you zoomed in on him clearing the weapon, for those people concerned that you're not being safe.

So, random thought: What about homemade composite armor? Take a 1/2" deep steel cooking tray, fill it with 5-10mm alumina polishing balls, then fill the remaining air inside it with molten aluminum (or a structurally sound bismuth-tin mix, if you don't have a forge setup, though it's more expensive and heavy than aluminum and all) Keeping the alumina in with say, chickenwire fencing or a screen clipped to the sides of the cooking tray while the molten metal fills it, then after the metal hardens coat the surface with spray-on bedliner. Should be less than $100 total for the materials, and it would be interesting to see how it would hold up vs rifle rounds. (given the principle should be similar to that used in some composite tank armors)
Composite armour is not that effective against kinetic rounds at low volumes. It's instead extremely effective against chemical rounds.
True, however I'm still curious how it might perform, given the hardness of alumina and all.
Furthermore, it would be a higher volume plate vs most level 3 AR500 armors, at about double the overall thickness, (steel backing plus a half inch of materials) if it's using 5mm alumina material it should stack to three-four layers in the tray, plus the metal between, should lead to both round deformation and friction breaking)
You build it, I am sure they would shoot it.
You see, I would, if I could spare $100, and I could find a place that sells alumina polishing medium where I could pick it up from the store or would ship to a PO box.
#workingclassproblems
I would like to see you sandwich a soft body armor panel to the AR500 armor, using FlexSeal as the glue.
YoderTexas I was always curious about a soft armor plate in front of Ar500 too! Thanks!
You’re the best I’m glad you’re still around 👍
Great job as always my friend. Thanks! I bet if you took some layers of kevlar and embedded it in the wet flex seal and let it dry it may help with loose fragment containment. Love your vids.
I remember my grandfather telling me about his experience with bullet spalling while serving in WW2 (Pacific) his hands and arm's where all scared up from a near miss from enemy machine gun fire lucky for him he had on a welders mask at the time may he rest in peace
Would be interesting to see how it would work if you chopped up an old kevlar vest and mixed some of it into the flex seal before putting it on. It would help keep the flex seal from splitting off chunks and blistering.
NerdByDesign "chopped up an old Kevlar vest" yeah that's kinda difficult
I had the same thought about fibre in the mix too
@@MODElAIRPLANE100 You can cut kevlar fibers with scissors pretty easily. Razor blades also go through without much trouble.
It wouldn’t work. If the AR500 Steel is behind the mixture it’ll still connect and splatter off. I believe you’re thinking of Spiderman’s webbing 😉

How would a flat sheet of rubber (nylon reinforced?) work instead of the flex-seal? You could perhaps use a contact adhesive to glue it on.
Good idea.
Yeah, I imagine that would be a lot tougher.
Sheet of nylon-reinforced rubber... you mean like a piece of tire sidewall? Yeah, that'd work.
You can also get it for conveyor-belts and such -- in which case it is flat, unlike a tire sidewall.
@@taofledermaus perhaps kevlar sheeted over the plate
Crazy thought: would the steel and flex-seal stay together better if your steel was grooved like a non-stick p....
Oh, you thought of that. Yeah, probably very hard to cut a fine pattern of grooves two ways into a hardened steel plate, but I think it'd:
1) Allow the coating to hang on better under the impacts and
2) cause the fragmetns to bounce *out* rather than splashing *across* the surface.
If you used something to reinforce the Flex Seal, like drywall patch tape, maybe the coating would have held together better.
Night Owl Gaming oil based primer might would work better, but really at those energy levels I doubt either would have helped significantly
Night Owl's got a point. It's not how hard it sticks - even the usual bed liner blows off in bubbles - but it's the tensile strength that's lacking. A layer of Flex Seal, a layer of fabric before it dries, then another layer of Flex Seal would probably be enough.
Why don't they just put a lip on the outer edge of the armor? Like a .25 inch protruding edge that would deflect the splatter. It would only need to be at the top too.
The armor weight is already a bit much... a lip added on... I'd defy you to wear it for 1 hr... standing up !

You guys are great! I've been a fan for 6 or 7 years and enjoyed your 22 caliber stuff you used to do and wondered if there was a chance for you to revisit some of those "adventures" in the future?
I shot hand guns competitively for years. Montrose Colorado used to have a competition called the "Steel Challenge" where you faced off against an opponent and had to drop steel plates. First to the stop plate dropping won. I carried my chair, gun bag and ammo in a little red wagon like kids use. At the end of a day of shooting it would have a LOT of lead and copper fragments in it. And it was sitting WAY back from the targets/firing line. During practive once one of my 45 cal, 230 grain round nose all lead bullets splattered against the plate, bounce back and a dime to nickle sized flat piece of lead struck my buddies wife in the front of the calf. Just hit flat and stuck there. We pulled it off. Slight burn from the heat and painful but she was still able to compete. Lead hitting steel isn't safe at close distance (up to 20+feet even). I'm thinkng the cloth/other material of the plate carriers help mitigate the splatter. Love to see a video on that.

It's always best to not change any of the variables when doing stuff like this. When you went from sheetrock to cardboard that will affect results. Also would have been great to have one more piece of sheetrock one the top of the plate to mimic a chin. I suspect if you placed just two layers of kevlar with your flex seal you would achieve the results you want. I would recommend sanding or grinding the ar plate to give the flex sewl something to grab onto.
That seemed to work well. But how would it work if you use layers of cloth and flex seal kinda like fiberglass is made. Would that work better??

#donttellmere! Wait a minute......
There's pretty nasty results with that steel plate with bullet split in pieces causing several injuries in whom try to use this plate in a bulletproof vest.the real problem was is bullets split in sharp pieces and splattering into the person that wear it for protection like an fragmentation grenade.
Roughing the plate up first will definitely help. After that, rather than floating a thick layer on, try this. Scrape a thin layer on first; this will force a bond about as well as you can get. Then you can float it thick.
Another thing you can try, is run down to the hardware store, you'll find notched trowels. First do the flat scrape mentioned above, let dry. Use the notched trowel to draw thick lines over it, let dry. Then layer a smoothing coat into it.
Lastly, the cardboard on one side is a difficult metric. Put the plate inside a box, so you can see how the rounds splatter, up sides and down. The bricks and plate won't let the box get away and collect collateral damage.
Didn't do .556 against painted side. Other than that, awesome vid as always! I love watching your videos. Very informative and entertaining specially with the offhand commentary from OG!
