    Another thing to keep in mind with the Top 3 Steam GPUs being the 3060, the 4060 Laptop, and the 4060, is that the 4060 is just ~5% faster than the 3060 in most games.
    And in a lot of games they’re pretty much on par, with the 3060 even outperforming the 4060 in some games due to the 4060s lack of vram.
    It shows that most people are perfectly fine with 1080p Medium/High settings.
    These people don’t need a 5090.
    Barely anyone needs a 5090.

    There have always been trash products mixed in with the real stuff in tech, but since the 90s it seems like the amount of real stuff has dropped to basically zero

    • @Blaszj
      @Blaszj Месяц назад +1

      I totally agree but also wonder how much of that opinion comes from just getting older and not remembering the dumbest stuff. This prompted me to try and find 90's CES tech and most of it looks pretty useless too.
      First thing I saw was the Konami's lightgun headset the LaserScope and the Powerglove. Samsung was pushing a Roomba in 1991 that instead of cleaning just had a microphone and heat sensors to be a virtual guard dog that will tell you if your house is on fire(it couldn't even pick up your socks.) Commodore CDTV. Kodak's Photo CD... a ton of computer and CD trash that doesn't realize how dumb it will be when the Internet starts existing.
      I guess it was slightly better in the 90's if only for the fact that more real companies were also mixed in with the insane scams but most companies selling real products today can get the word out a million other ways. It really is the same as the E3 problem but I guess there's enough money in CES to keep it going for now.

    I'm still real happy with my OG RTX 3080. If Steam Replay highlighted anything it's that you're not playing games that need a new card.
    Jeff mentioned it before but it's worth highlighting again; only 43% of playtime on Steam was for games that released in the last 7 years. I don't need a 5090 to keep playing modded Morrowind.

    Anyway I could see a UFO50 sequel being 16 games and a collaboration with other devs explained in the fiction as UFO Soft’s ill-fated satellite studios. Maybe different constraints on a dead-in-the-water console with no third party support, like a virtual boy analogue or something

    the entire reason why we're seeing frame gen and upscale tech getting all the focus is cause of the dimimishing returns in silicon advancements no? we're reaching like, the physical limits of electricity below 5nm processes. same reason power targets are increasing for these - it's the only way to make the number go up enough to make people maybe want a new card. maybe a bummer state of affairs and frame generation is certainly a bridge too far but it's not like these companies stand to gain from spending all that rnd on *not* making more cuda cores or whatever. yakno? idk who i'm addressing with this but i see a lot of people mocking dlss when like, native 4k is kind of an insane number of pixels to be pushing at all and jumping straight to that from 1080p maybe misaligned some people's expectations

      Steam deck and PC can play ANY Pokemon or Mario game thanks to emulation.... You know... like the Switch does for its subscription retro games? I agree the next Switch will sell well regardless, as people who want both will get them.
      But at the same time, the bigger thing to be worrying about if that's your forte to white knight for billion dollar companies who don't care about you: the US economy is heading fast into a deep recession (not helped by these new tariffs), and global events across the world are spiraling much of the planet towards a bad economic time that will make the last few years look good.
      Things are going to get tough in a way that will mean no matter what, the New Switch probably won't sell _aswell_ as the last one, simply on account of a certain chunk of the people who bought the first in 2018 and thru stimuluses, are going to be bullish with there money this time as they buckle down thru hard times.
      That's not to say the thing won't sell like hotcakes and be sold out and even scalped at launch. But rather, I feel confident that the Switch successor will never achieve the lifetime sale record that this one broke after twenty years of being held by the PS2 (and PS1 before it).
      A sizable portion of those millions and millions of families will be effected by the economic turmoil and a new $400 tablet will not be a priority, when they already have a Switch(s) and that money is clothes, bills, food, etc.

    graphics and graphics technology feel like they're only getting further and further away from video games themselves and i don't know if that's just my perception or a common sentiment. i don't want fake frames, i don't want a grainy, ghosting upsampled image - hell, i barely want an upsampled image if it's perfect. i just want the game to run alright natively. i think it's pretty telling that this new ai-driven gpu tech has invented a new type of input latency with frame generation. input lag is the final death, it's the biggest killer of game feel by a mile. i feel like a 2010s era nvidia dev would kill someone with a butter knife if they heard they were inventing new types of input lag in the 2020s.

    My biggest problem is the only reason we need all this AI stuff is because developers have just decided to let Nvidia and Epic take control of their programming. They fire all their in house programmers and just rely on Epic and Nvidia to do all the work, while they just make their game using Unreal Engine and all the preset tools given to them. It's essentially locking down the industry to those two companies and optimization has just gone out of the window. What I really thought would have happened is developers used Ray Tracing on these cards to help them make more realistic baked in lighting or less demanding ways of doing real time lighting. That way they can replicate Ray Traced lighting without actually needing it.... But it seems like the future is just them going "RTX Only" and all the optimization is thrown to DLSS.

    • @WritesTooMuch

      The _"AI stuff"_ has little to do with game developers. Nvidia and AMD are invested HEAVILY in AI in Data Centers and businesses class products. When a well off enthusiast buys a RTX 5090 when those launch soon, for example - that Blackwell product is just a by product of what Nvidia produced for the Data Centers. So what we consumers get, almost never is a product designed exclusively for gaming... but rather the Prosumer markets scraps repurposed. Since all of this AI focused tech is already present, then it's going to be repurposed and sold as a focal feature set to casual consumers/gamers on the stripped down product. It is the publishers and developers of videogames who decide to utilize those feature in a way that seems like a crutch to many gamers.

    • @WritesTooMuch
      @WritesTooMuch Месяц назад

      That's all true, but at the end of the day - little of that is why we currently have frame-gen or upscaling specifically on our consumer GPUs.
      Yes, those happen to be a fortunate happen-stance for the GPU makers, and sure do give some breathing room in a time where rendering advancement is starting to stagnant a bit.
      But the reality is a bit more pedestrian, in that those feature are actually just a result of the by-products of the greater sector/markets fervent demand AI hardware integration for manufacturing, transport, data centers/cloud, research/academic, business and military applications.
      _[This is a applicable repost I made to another commenter]_

      The actual problem is people demanding games run at 4k native with 120fps and thinking that's reasonable. They do this because that's what people demand and then those people cry that it's fake. You're not wrong about a lot of stuff here, but consumer expectations are absolutely insane because they all bought 4k tvs and were told that's the future

    The answer to having "the real frames" instead of generating and reconstructing them is optimisation, it's got nothing to do with Nvidia it's entirely in the developers hands, which in some cases are also being tied by Unreal Engine 5 guiding devs down paths of heavy rendering and less optimised techniques.
    The idea of having to push photorealistic graphics to succeed has long been proven false, and on top of that the blurry, smudgy, stuttery, or even occasional outright ugly AAA games we've been seeing just add insult to injury, unfortunately Nvidia still needs to sell hardware so... let's keep smashing our faces against this wall forever until something happens.

    I love the steam survey. I suppose most people buying 4090s arent gaming.

    • @WritesTooMuch
      @WritesTooMuch Месяц назад +1

      I wouldn't go that far. For all its flaws and sample size - the Steam Survey in its weird way, has been a fairly reliable way to compare TOTAL GPU sales. It does this by giving us a pseudo Pie Chart (conceptually) that breaks down the gaming audiences hardware.
      It makes it clear that no matter how many RTX 4090s are sold... if you bought one, then your in a extreme minority of people who can easily afford one. Because Nvidia and AMD are selling vastly-vastly-vastly more lower spec cards to casual consumers globally (especially in markets where people don't make the kind of money affluent westerners do).
      A nice chunk of the 4090 sales will be exclusively for private business or personal academic work... but most will double dip with gaming, because better products exist for those non gaming purposes.
      And for every person using a RTX 4090 to render video, 3D model, mine or whatever... there are far more people using lower spec (but plenty capable) GPUs for that too, which wouldn't be in the Steam Survey.
      The enthusiasts crowd tends to forget this though: because people with money like to make fun of the "poor bois" and pretend people who can't easily afford 4090s are a jealous minority of complainers...
      Instead of the reality that 98% of people who buy a GPU aren't buying the Halo product, and then going online bragging about their 4090 incessantly on Reddit or every YT comments section to shame anyone mention GPU pricing.
      YT tech in my experience is a especially poor sample population to build you opinion on product adoption too - given it is largely a ecochamber for the most extreme fringe side of any of demographic. Even of the most hardcore enthusiasts (the people with 6800xt and RTX3080, 4070 ti, 4080 Supers)..
      Channels like Gamers Nexus, Bitwit, Paul's Hardware, Jayztwocents, Hardware Unboxed, etc... the majority of the comments are the very same economically blessed people across channels regularly commenting on uploads (many of them scientists, engineers and financial leaders... the top 5-10% of the western population).
      And for what it's worth: in the grand scheme of things - we are _all_ (the casual consumers and home enthusiasts) in the minority. Both Nvidia and AMD produce, ship and sell WAY more Prosumer GPUs to data centers, than all their consumer products combined.

    I built a high end pc to emulate ps3 in 2019, and once I realized it could run circles around PS4 that's when I turned into a full pc gamer. I've upgraded since then, but I'm not sure what 'll do in the future. Emulation requirements have mostly stagnated (If your pc can do PS3 well it will definitely do PS4) and I was ok with spending $2000-$2500 on a top of the line pc every few years to keep up with emulation and play modern games, but $3000-$4000 for specifically just new games I won't do on principle.

    i woudlnt buy a 5090 but i do usually try to go high end just because of my experience with bad ports from the early steam era and those xbox360/ps3 ports. it seemed like almost a quarter of early ports on steam needed top end cards just to run ok even if they shouldnt need it. i generally trust modern microsoft at it but who knows what next sony project gets ported over and needs 4 times the resources it needed on console just to run smoothly. squaresoft in particular has not cemented themselves as trustworthy in that regard.

    I think at this point I have accepted that I will never understand this normalisation of Nvidia's practice and their exuberant cost of their product. Yes, DLLA and DLSS are great innovative techniques, but it seems that people can play all games on high on cheaper gpus, if you have the patience to give it few years for mid gen gpus to render Tay-tracing at acceptable, non-taxing level.
    I fund it really cultish the way people champion the new 5000 series despite the fact that, bar the £2000 5090, all have 16 VRAM. I mean can't people see the problem here. 16 VRAM is not ok in 2025 with the amount of texture rendering done in 4k for many games.
